Fourth Generation

24. Patrick (Paddy) FINUCANE (Mary Anne (Mainanne) O'CONNOR , William O'CONNOR , Patrick ) was born on 5 Dec 1899 in Clounprohus, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 10 Apr 1984 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Paddy was elected to Kerry County Council in 1942, and in 1943 he was elected as TD (Teachta Dála, meaning member of parliament) for Clann na Talún (the Farmers' Party). At a later stage he was elected to the Dáil as an Independent TD. He was never defeated at election time, and in 1969 he retired after 26 years in the Dáil. His main achievement as a TD was the implementation of the Brick and Cashen drainage scheme which proved vital in the prevention of flooding in north Kerry.

During World War II, Paddy played a role in bringing evacuated German children to North Kerry. These children would stay initially in Glencree, Co. Wicklow from where they would be sent to live with Irish families for the duration of the war. Paddy found homes for over twenty of these children in North Kerry. Two of the children lived with Paddy and his family, and one lived with Paddy's brother Jack and his family in Clounprohus, Moyvane. The children attended the local schools and even learned Irish.

Patrick married Elizabeth (Lily) HANRAHAN, daughter of John (The Major) HANRAHAN and Elizabeth BUCKLEY, in 1920 in Listowel Church, Co. Kerry. Elizabeth was born on 10 Oct 1897 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 12 Oct 1897 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 10 Nov 1943 in Urlee, Lisselton, Co. Kerry. She was buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Lily's baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Hanrahan and Mary Hudson.

Prior to her marriage to Paddy, Lily's parents had arranged a marriage between her and someone else. However, Lily and Paddy had fallen in love, so they eloped. After their marriage they lived in Kilbaha where their first child was born. The move to Urlee in Lisselton (in about 1923) came about because they bought or were given the farm of Lily's uncle Mike Buckley and his wife, Maria (née Kissane) who had no children.

Lily and Paddy were second cousins once removed as Paddy's great-grandfather Bryan Cunningham and Lily's grandmother Margaret (Peg) Cunningham were brother and sister.

Lily was only 46 years of age when she died (of "bronchial asthma").

Dick was also known as Richie. After leaving school he went to Maynooth college to study for the priesthood. Dick eventually decided not to complete his religious studies and left Maynooth after three years with a BA degree. After spending a couple of years working on the family farm he went to University College Dublin and graduated in 1949 with an Agricultural Science degree. He later became an advisor with the Department of Agriculture in Co. Limerick and later in Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Richard married Sheila TREACY, daughter of Thomas Joseph TREACY and Ellen O'SULLIVAN, on 11 Sep 1958 in Limerick. Sheila was born on 27 Jul 1923 in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary. She died on 5 Jul 2012 in Dublin.

The name on Sheila's certificate of baptism is "Julia Anna Tracey" (it is Sheila Treacy on her birth certificate).

With her sister, Jo-Ann, Sheila trained as a nurse at the Withington Hospital in Manchester, both qualifying in 1944. Sheila subsequently worked in Brighton (c.1944-c.1949), Moorfields Eye Hospital in London (c.1950-c.1953), Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital in Dublin (c.1953-c.1954) and the Regional Hospital in Limerick (c.1954-1958). She was a specialist in opthalmic work.

Billy's baptismal sponsors were William Foran and Honora Shine.

Billy and his wife, Jo, were related. It is thought by a family member that they might have been third cousins, but the exact connection has not been established. We do know that Billy's father's name was Maurice and that Maurice's father's name was Bryan (Maurice's children were known as the 'Maurice Bryans'). However, it is not known if Maurice was a son of "Little Bryan" (which would make Jo and Billy third cousins once removed), or a son of Bryan Cunningham who married Johanna Hudson (which would make them first cousins once removed). However, given the information we have been provided by the family source it appears the former is more likely.

Billy was a fine singer. He inherited the Cunningham family home in Moyvane village.
