Descendants of Patrick O'CONNOR / CONNORS (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Second Generation

3. Johanna O'CONNOR (caution: not verified) (Patrick ) was born in Oct 1832 in probably Dirreen Lower, Athea, Co. Limerick. She was christened on 18 Oct 1832 in Athea, Co. Limerick. She died.

Sponsors at Johanna's baptism were John Scanlon and Margaret Fitzgerald.

A marriage record has been located for a Johanna Connor of Kilbaha who married a Patrick Sullivan of Athea, Co. Limerick in 1858. I am making an assumption - which may well be incorrect - that this Johanna is Johanna above, the presumed daughter of our Patrick Connor. Unfortunately the father's first name is not written on the marriage record, the only information about him being that he was from Kilbaha.

Johanna married Patrick SULLIVAN (caution: not verified) on 11 Feb 1858 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Patrick was born in probably Athea, Co. Limerick. He died.

Marriage Notes:

The marriage was witnessed by William Stack and Thomas Dinneen, both of Kilbaha.

Johanna and Patrick had the following children.

  11 F i
Ellen SULLIVAN (caution: not verified) was born about 3 Mar 1878 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 5 Mar 1878 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

5. William O'CONNOR (Patrick ) was born in probably Oct 1835 in probably Dirreen Lower, Athea, Co. Limerick. He was christened in probably 19 Oct 1835 in probably Athea, Co. Limerick. He died in Apr 1920 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at William's baptism were Daniel Mullane and Johanna Casey.

William farmed in Kilbaha North.

In the 1901 census there is a return for the household of Kate O'Connor, also of Kilbaha North. She is the only one listed for the household, and her occupation is "agricultural labourer". The writing on the census is too faint to make out her age. She is not listed in the Kilbaha returns in 1911. If she was unrelated to our O'Connor family perhaps she was connected to Patrick O'Connor who moved to Kilbaha from Shronebeirne, Duagh in the mid-19th century (see notes for Patrick O'Connor, father of William above).

William married Johanna CUNNINGHAM, daughter of Bryan CUNNINGHAM and Johanna HUDSON, on 12 Feb 1871 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane). Johanna was born about 17 Jun 1854 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 19 Jun 1854 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 12 Dec 1927 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

The sponsor at Johanna's baptism was Edmund Hudson.

It appears that Johanna was only 16 years of age when she married William, who was probably about 35 years old at the time of their marriage. Her last child, Michael, was born when Johanna was only 25 years of age.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Michael Hanrahan and Daniel Connell.

William and Johanna had the following children.

Patrick (Paddy Otter) O'CONNOR was born on 20 Nov 1871 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 23 Nov 1871 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 9 Nov 1963 in Beenbrack, Lisaniskea, Knockanure, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Paddy's baptism were Edmund Cunningham and Honoria Cunningham.

Paddy was known as "Otter" and "Paddy Otter" because he had a passion for fishing. He lived to be 91 and was still cycling until shortly before his death.

It is surprising Paddy did not inherit the family farm given that he was the eldest son. It was Paddy's next surviving brother, Jack, who got the farm. Jack married just three days before Paddy in March 1916, by which time Paddy was farming in Lisaniskea, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Patrick married Johanna (Hannah) AHERN, daughter of Michael AHERN, on 7 Mar 1916 in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. Johanna was born about 1882 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in probably Beenbrack, Lisaniskea, Knockanure, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Hannah was from Leitrim Middle in Moyvane. She and her husband, Paddy, lived in Beenbrack in Lisaniskea, Knockanure. They had no children. The farm passed to a relative of Hannah's (perhaps a niece?) named Margaret Ahern who was married to a Joe Collins.

Bryan O'CONNOR was born on 5 Dec 1872 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 7 Dec 1872 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 19 Jul 1889 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Bryan's baptismal sponsors were Richard Cunningham and Margaret Cunningham.

Bryan died at the age of 16 from "pulmonary consumption" from which he had been suffering for a year.
+ 14 F iii Mary Anne (Mainanne) O'CONNOR was born on 6 Apr 1874. She died on 11 Sep 1951.
+ 15 M iv John (Jack Bill) O'CONNOR was born on 25 May 1876. He died on 8 Nov 1959.
+ 16 M v Edmond (Eddie, Ned) O'CONNOR was born on 24 May 1877. He died on 25 Mar 1960.
  17 M vi
Michael O'CONNOR was born on 2 Jun 1880 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 5 Jun 1880 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 3 Mar 1912 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

According to Michael's death certificate, he was aged 24 when he died in 1912, which would mean he was born in 1887 or 1888 rather than 1880. His headstone gives his age at death as 27, which would mean he was born in 1884 or 1885. Michael's baptismal record, showing his year of birth to be 1880, is the most dependable indication of date of birth (even moreso than birth certificates as births were often registered many months after the event whereas baptisms in Ireland at that time typically took place a day or two after the birth).

Michael died at the age of 31. I had been told by a family source that he died of a perforated appendix. However, according to his death certificate, he died of pneumonia.

6. Brigid O'CONNOR (caution: not verified) (Patrick ) was born about 1837.

Brigid married Thomas BARRETT (caution: not verified) on 1 Mar 1862 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Thomas was born about 1820 in probably Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

A marriage record was located for a Thomas Barrett of Ballylongford and a Brigid Connor of Kilbaha, daughter of Patrick Connor. We are assuming Brigid was a daughter of our Patrick O'Connor.

According to the 1911 census, Thomas and Brigid, who were living in Bunnaruddee in Ballylongford, were married for 49 years and had nine children born alive, six of whom were still alive at the time of the census.

Marriage Notes:

The marriage was witnessed by Thomas (what looks like) Sandes of Ahalahana, Co. Kerry.

Brigid and Thomas had the following children.

  18 F i
Catherine BARRETT was born about 30 Oct 1864 in Dromalivaun, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 1 Nov 1864 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Stephen Barrett and Catherine Connor.
  19 M ii
Stephen BARRETT was born about 23 Jan 1867 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 25 Jan 1867 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Joseph Barrett and Ellen Ahern.
  20 M iii
Patrick BARRETT was born about 27 Feb 1869 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 1 Mar 1869 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. He died in 1869 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Patrick died as an infant. His father, Thomas, was actually fined 20 shillings on 1 January 1870 for not registering Patrick's death (this from Ballylongford Petty Court records).

Another son was born about eight years later to Thomas and his wife, who named him Patrick.
  21 M iv
John BARRETT was born about 12 Jul 1870 in Bunnaruddee, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 14 Jul 1870 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Joseph Barrett and Hanora Connor.
  22 M v
Edward BARRETT was born about 13 May 1875 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 15 May 1875 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Daniel Connell and Hanora Connor.

Edward's name is given as Edmund in the 1911 census.
