Third Generation

10. Mary MADDEN (Sarah NOLAN , Joseph ) was born on 16 Jan 1892 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 19 Jan 1892 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died in Jun 1961 in New York.

Mary's baptismal sponsors were Edward Fitzgerald and Catherine Mulvihill.

Mary emigrated to the United States in 1909, arriving at Ellis Island on 18 September of that year. She was joining her uncle Cornelius Madden of 126 East 98th St. in New York. She must have returned to Ireland for a time because she arrived again at Ellis Island 11 years later, on 12 November 1920, giving her last place of residence as Ballylongford rather than New York. Again her contact name on the ship manifest is given as her uncle Cornelius. However, we do know that Mary was living in New York in August 1912 when her sister Maggie emigrated to the States as Maggie's contact name on the ship manifest is given as her sister Mary of 126 West 98th St.

At the time of the 1930 census Mary and her family were living in Manhattan. By the time of the 1940 census the family had moved to Woodycrest Avenue in the Bronx.

Mary married William ATKINSON about 1923 in probably New York. William was born about 1894 in Ireland.

According to the 1940 census, William was a Port Authority patrolman.

They had the following children.

  23 F i Living.
  24 M ii Living.
  25 M iii Living.

12. Bridget MADDEN (Sarah NOLAN , Joseph ) was born on 9 Feb 1895 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 10 Feb 1895 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died on 25 Mar 1970. She was buried in Kilshane Cemetery, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry.

Bridget's baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Ahern and Bridget Madden.

Bridget married Jeremiah O'SULLIVAN, son of William O'SULLIVAN, on 4 Mar 1930 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Jeremiah died on 16 Feb 1945. He was buried in Kilshane Cemetery, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry.

I was told Jeremiah was from Dromclough, Listowel, Co. Kerry, although his marriage certificaate tells us he was from Lixnaw, Co. Kerry.

They had the following children.

+ 26 F i Mary O'SULLIVAN was born in 1932. She died on 17 Jul 2010.
+ 27 F ii Living.

17. Jane MADDEN (Sarah NOLAN , Joseph ) was born on 1 Feb 1905 in Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. She died on 22 Dec 1985 in Newmarket-on-Fergus, Co. Clare. She was buried in Lislaughtin Abbey, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Jane and her husband, Mikey, lived on Well St. in Ballylongford.

Jane married Michael (Mikey) FITZGERALD. Michael died on 9 Feb 1977 in Tralee, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Lislaughtin Abbey, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Mikey was from Lenamore, Ballylongford, Co. Kerry.

Fitzgerald researchers may be interested in the following, who may or may not be related to Mikey:

A Richard Fitzgerald of Lenamore who died on 1 February 1927 aged 75 is buried in Killehenny Cemetery along with his wife, Julia who died 4 July 1954. Another Richard Fitzgerald from Lenamore is buried in Murhur Cemetery beside his wife, Mary Bridget. Richard died aged 78 on 16 October 1971 in hospital in Listowel and Mary Bridget died aged 84 on 19 July 1975 in hospital in Tralee. They were survived by sons and daughters, and Richard was survived by brothers and a sister. Richard, who had a life-long interest in horses, passed his farm on to a son. Could one of his sons have been Tom Fitzgerald of Lenamore who died on 14 Ocober 1997 and is also buried in Murhur Cemetery. Tom's wife's name was Nora (maiden name unknown) and, at the time of his death, he left sons, daughters (including Maria, a primary school teacher), a brother (Eddie who died in England in 1996) and sisters (including Mrs. Ned Collins of Lenamore). Tom kept greyhounds.

I am also told of a John Fitzgerald from Lenamore who owned St. John's Tavern in Archway in London many years ago.

Kerry. He was christened on 5 Jun 1876 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 8 Nov 1959 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

The sponsors at Jack's baptism were (what appears to be) William Hanrahan and Johanna Hanrahan. Jack was known as Jack Bill because his father's name was Bill (William). This followed a local naming custom by which people (females included) often had their father's name added to their first names in order to distinguish them from others of the same name in the area.

Jack Bill ran the O'Connor family farm in Kilbaha.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage of Jack Bill and Babe were Patrick Finucane and Ellie Shanahan (probably Babe's sister).

According to their son Dick, the marriage of Jack Bill and Babe was arranged, a practice common at the time.

Mick's baptismal sponsors were Michael Moran and Honora Moran.

Mick was also known as "Mickeen John Paddy" (because his father was John and his grandfather was Paddy). He was well known in the area for his ability to cure ringworm, this knowledge apparently having been passed down to him by his father. When people would come to him with ringworm, he would apply to the skin a mixture made up mostly of unsalted butter, but nobody knows what he put into the butter to make the cure.
