Patrick married Bridget FEENEY. Bridget was born about 1829 in Co. Roscommon. She died after 21 Jun 1908.

Given the gap between the births of Mary and Thomas below, it is likely Bridget and her husband, Pat, had more children than those listed.

They had the following children.

13. James MORAHAN (Charles , 'unknown' ) was born about 1836 in Carrick-on-Shannon area, Co. Roscommon. He died on 4 Feb 1912 in Fair Hill, Killarney, Co. Kerry.

James was a boat builder in the Carrick-on-Shannon area. He was living in Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon at the time of his marriage in 1870. He and his family later moved to Killarney, probably after the death of his wife, Bridget. In Killarney he carried on boat-building and in 1898 added coach-building to his business. The 1901 census lists 64-year-old James and his 26-year-old daughter Mary Agnes in Moyeightragh, Killarney.

James married Bridget BURKE, daughter of Michael BURKE, on 28 Feb 1870 in Croghan, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Bridget was born about 1852 in Co. Roscommon. She died on 3 Sep 1886 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

Bridget died at the age of 34 of "Nephritis, 6 months" and Uraemia, 2 days".

A Bridie Morahan, aged 70 and unmarried, died in Killarney on 23 November 1945. Was Bridie a daughter of Bridget and James?

Marriage Notes:

James's address on the marriage record is Cortober (Co. Roscommon) and Bridget's is Bridgetown (presumably also Co. Roscommon).

James and Bridget had the following children.

  44 M i
Charles Patrick MORAHAN was born on 19 Feb 1871 in Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died in 1871 in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

Charles died as an infant.
  45 M ii
Michael MORAHAN was born in 1872 in Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died before 31 May 1877 in probably Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.
  46 F iii
Mary Agnes MORAHAN was born on 24 Feb 1874 in Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon.

Mary's name appears on her marriage record as Agnes.

Mary and her husband, Patrick, may not have had children as the 1911 census tells us they had been married 11 years and had no children.

Mary married Patrick DOYLE, son of Patrick DOYLE, on 16 Apr 1902 in Killarney Cathedral, Co. Kerry. Patrick was born about 1873 in Co. Carlow.

Patrick was a policeman. His address as given on his marriage certificate (1902)was Dublin. At the time of the 1911 census he and his wife, Agnes, were living on Nicholas Place, Wood Quay, Dublin.
+ 47 M iv Michael Joseph MORAHAN was born on 31 May 1877. He died on 19 Sep 1939.

14. John MORAHAN (Charles , 'unknown' ) was born about 15 Aug 1838 in Cloonmaan, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was christened on 17 Aug 1838. He died on 22 Oct 1906 in Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was buried in Ardcarne Cemetery, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

John was a boat builder. During the 1870s he and his family appear to have been living in the townland of Cloonmaan in the parish of Tumna, Co. Roscommon, and at the time of the 1901 census they were living in the townland of Cortober in the parish of Killukin, Co. Roscommon, although a newspaper obituary for John (1906) tells he lived at Shannon View in Carrick-on-Shannon.

I am making an assumption that John was a brother of James Morahan another boat builder from the Carrick-on-Shannon area. This presumptive link is based on the fact that the father of both John and James was named Charles, both had Cortober connections and both were involved in the boat-making business. However I have no proof that they were in fact brother, which is why I have added a caution beside John's name. John and/or James may also have been related to the family of Bernard Morahan (born in the Carrick-on-Shannon area around the 1810s or 1820s), two of whose sons were coach builders.

There is an account on the Duchas website, www.duchas.ie, written as part of a 1930s school project on the history of Carrick-on-Shannon trades. Included is a brief description of the Morahan boat building business in the town:

"John Morahan and Sons, who lived on the Liberty, Carrick-on-Shannon were noted boat-builders. They turned out different kinds of boats including pleasuring-boats, turf-cotes etc. They made pleasuring boats for Lord Dudley, when Lord Lieutenant of Ireland." Mention is also made of the coach building business of the other Morahan family: "In the house now in possession of Mrs. Holt, wife of the late Mr. Holt, T. D. coach-building was carried on by a different family of Morahan." Note: This family of Morahans may have been the descendants of Bernard Morahan mentioned above.

John married Catherine MORAHAN, daughter of James MORAHAN, on 25 Jul 1870 in Cootehall, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Catherine was born about 1851 in probably Cleaheen, Co. Roscommon. She died on 21 Feb 1926 in Shannon View, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She was buried in Ardcarne Cemetery, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

It is not known if Catherine and her husband, John Morahan, were related.

They had the following children.

+ 48 M i James MORAHAN died in Oct 1957.
  49 M ii
Thomas MORAHAN was born on 24 Nov 1872 in Cloonmaan, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.
+ 50 F iii Mary Ann MORAHAN was born about 1874. She died after 30 Apr 1942.
+ 51 M iv Charles MORAHAN was born in 1876. He died on 1 Oct 1956.
+ 52 F v Catherine (Katie) MORAHAN was born on 29 Jun 1878. She died on 19 Sep 1959.
  53 M vi
John MORAHAN was born about 1879 in probably Cloonmaan, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 30 Apr 1942 in 812 4th Avenue, San Francisco.

The 1901 census tells us that 20-year-old John was working at the time as a "rural post boy". He later worked in the boat-building business. A keen oarsman he was a prominent member of the Carrick-on-Shannon Rowing Club. He later emigrated to the United States and settled in the San Francisco area. He died at the home of his sister Mary.
  54 M vii
Patrick MORAHAN was born in probably Cloonmaan, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died.

17. Bernard (Barney) MORAHAN (Charles , 'unknown' ) was born about 13 Sep 1843 in Cloonmaan, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was christened on 15 Sep 1843. He died in 1932 in Dunedin, New Zealand.

I am told by a family source that Barney may have served with the Metropolitan Police in London for a time as a young man, although he is described as a farmer on his marriage certificate (1878). He later emigrated to New Zealand.

Bernard married Mary GLANCY, daughter of Patrick (Pat) GLANCY, on 18 Feb 1878 in Cloonfad, Aughrim, Co. Roscommon. Mary was born about 1851 in Curries, Cloonfad, Co. Roscommon. She died on 21 Dec 1885 in Cloonmaan, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

Mary died aged just 34 of "enlargement of the body".

They had the following children.

+ 55 M i Joseph Patrick MORAHAN was born about 1882. He died in 1953.

Bernard also married Winifred REGAN, daughter of James REGAN, on 20 Feb 1886 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. Winifred was born in probably Lisduff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died in New Zealand.

I have been told Winifred was related to Barney's first wife, Mary, and that Winifred and Barney had no children.

21. Peter MORAHAN (Charles , 'unknown' ) was born about 15 Feb 1856 in Killukin, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 17 Feb 1856 in Killukin, Co. Roscommon. He died on 4 Dec 1938 in County Home, Roscommon, Co. Roscommon. He was buried in Ardcarne Cemetery, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Peter joined the R.I.C. (Royal Irish Constabulary) and was stationed in Killarney, Co. Kerry for many years. He and his wife, Martha, later moved to Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim where they lived on Boyle Road.

Peter married Martha WALL about 1883. Martha was born about 1857 in Macroom area, Co. Cork. She died on 27 Aug 1939 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She was buried in Ardcarne Cemetery, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

The 1911 census tells us that Martha and her husband, Peter, had 11 children born alive, six of whom were still alive at the time of the census. All six emigrated to the United States.

They had the following children.

  56 F i
Hannah Maria MORAHAN was born about 1884 in Killarney, Co. Kerry. She died in 1967 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Hannah was working as a teacher at the time of the 1901 census. She later emigrated to the United States. She and her sister Martha married two brothers.

  57 F ii
Elizabeth Anne (Bridie) MORAHAN was born on 5 Aug 1886 in Fair Hill, Killarney, Co. Kerry. She died on 1 Oct 1903 in Château de la Vernède, Aramon, France.

Elizabeth was known as Bridie. She died at the age of 17 in France. I do not know what had brought her to France. Had she entered the convent there?
  58 F iii

23. Mary Ann BARRETT (Bridget MORAGHAN , 'unknown' ) was born about 1856 in Ballinvilla, Croghan, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

Mary married John GARVEY. John was born about 1841 in Brierfield, Carrowduff, Co. Roscommon. He died in 1921.

They had the following children.

+ 67 M i Patrick Edward GARVEY was born in 1879. He died on 3 Jul 1962.

24. John MORAHAN (John , 'unknown' ) was born about 7 Aug 1840 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was christened on 9 Aug 1840 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 21 Sep 1911 in Brisbane, Queensland.

Sponsors at John's baptism were William Bertridge and Mary Foley. John emigrated to Australia, aged 22, in 1863. As the eldest son it is likely he would have been offered the family farm so it could be said it was unusual that he emigrated.

John married Alice MCCANN in 1884 in Queensland. Alice was born in 1857 in Brisbane, Queensland. She died in 1913 in Brisbane, Queensland.

They had the following children.

  68 M i
Percival (Percy) James MORAHAN was born on 9 Apr 1885 in Queensland. He died in 1912 in Queensland.

+ 70 F iii Frances Margaret MORAHAN was born on 20 Dec 1891. She died in 1956.
+ 71 M iv John Joseph MORAHAN was born in 1898. He died in 1934.

25. Owen MORAHAN (John , 'unknown' ) was born about 10 Dec 1842 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was christened on 12 Dec 1842 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 3 Feb 1928 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was buried in Jamestown Cemetery, Co. Leitrim.

The only baptismal record found by the Leitrim Genealogy Centre for an Owen Morahan baptised in Kiltoghert gives a baptismal date of 12 December 1842 and parents' names of John Morahan and Mary RUTLEDGE (sponsors were Mathew Gaffney and Ann Jones). The genealogist from the Leitrim Genealogy Centre thinks that 'Rutledge' should actually read 'Bertridge' given the similarity between the names and the fact that there is no evidence of any more baptisms around that time in Kiltoghert where the mother was Mary Rutledge. Nor is there any record of a marriage in Kiltoghert between a John Morahan and a Mary Rutledge whereas a marriage did take place between John or James Morahan (it is unclear on the actual marriage record) and Mary Bertridge on 24 March 1836 in Kiltoghert. Furthermore Owen's date of baptism does not conflict with the baptism dates of John Morahan's and Mary Bertridge's other children, or with their date of marriage.

According to his death record, Owen died of 'old age'.

Note: In some documents, Owen is listed as "Eugene" (these names are interchangeable in Irish families).

Owen married Margaret O'HARA, daughter of Laurence O'HARA and Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN, on 4 Feb 1875 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Margaret was born about 8 May 1851 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 10 May 1851 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died on 28 May 1940 in Derrynargon, Keadue, Co. Roscommon. She was buried in Jamestown Cemetery, Co. Leitrim.

Witnesses to the marriage of Margaret and Owen were James Barrett and Bridget O'Hara, Bridget presumably being Margaret's sister.

Owen and Margaret farmed in the townland of Cloonfeacle near Carrick-on-Shannon.

Margaret died at the home of her daughter Linda Molloy and was buried in Jamestown Cemetery, as were her husband, Owen, and their two their children who died young, William and Gretta. Their gravestone, if there was one, is no longer visible.

Note: The O'Hara family is twice connected to another family being researched - the Gordons of Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. Margaret O'Hara's daughter, Mary Morahan, married Cormac Gordon whose older sister, Bridget Gordon, was married to Margaret's younger brother, Laurence O'Hara.

They had the following children.

+ 72 M i John MORAHAN was born on 17 Nov 1875. He died on 24 Jan 1953.
+ 73 F ii Mary MORAHAN was born about 5 Aug 1877. She died on 20 Jan 1932.
+ 74 M iii Michael Joseph MORAHAN was born on 13 Jul 1879. He died on 7 Mar 1959.
  75 M iv
Lawrence (Larry) Aloysius MORAHAN was born on 7 May 1881 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was christened on 8 May 1881 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 29 Jul 1970 in Roebuck Road, Dublin. He was buried in Deansgrange Cemetery, Dublin.

Sponsors at Larry's baptism were Michael Hunt and Ellen O'Hara.

Following studies at St. Patrick's College in Drumcondra, Dublin (Larry is listed as a 19-year-old student at the college in the 1901 census), Larry became a school teacher and it is known that he was teaching in Dublin in 1903. In 1904 he emigrated to the United States and possibly spent some time in Chicago before moving to Montana. We know that in 1906 he was living in Butte, Montana where a very large number of Irish were living at the time, attracted by the plentiful supply of jobs in mining. In Butte, Larry was involved, along with his first cousin Michael Hunt, in the publication of the Irish nationalist Butte Independent newspaper ("Published Every Saturday by Mulcahy, Morahan and Hunt"). By late 1911, however, Larry was living in Houston, Texas - Ellis Island records show that his brother Paddy, who arrived in New York in October 1911, was planning to join him there. Larry became naturalised in Houston on 9 May 1912.

The 1920 census shows Larry and Paddy living in the same rooming house in Houston. Larry was now working as a clerk in a tax assessment company, although family sources say that he worked in the newspaper business in Houston. It appears he returned to live in Ireland prior to 1925 as he married Molly (Hurley) in Galway in that year and it is known that they lived in Galway for many years. He and Molly had no children, and Larry died in a Dublin nursing home at the age of 89. There is no stone marking his grave in Deansgrange Cemetery.

Lawrence married Mary (Molly) Teresa HURLEY, daughter of John HURLEY and Ellen HORAN, on 17 Sep 1925 in Cathedral of St. Nicholas, Galway. Mary was born on 31 Oct 1888 in Dominick St., Galway. She died on 14 Jan 1951 in Galway. She was buried in Bohermore Cemetery, Galway.

According to her marriage record Molly was a shopkeeper from Dominick St. in Galway. She and her husband, Larry, had no children.

Molly is buried with her husband's nephew Gussie Morahan and his wife, Rose, in Bohermore Cemetery.
+ 76 F v Bridget Linda (Linda) MORAHAN was born in Mar 1883. She died on 30 Apr 1958.
  77 M vi
Eugene MORAHAN was born on 15 May 1885 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 28 Jul 1935 in 283 Tara St., San Francisco.

Eugene emigrated to the United States in April 1909 and made his way to Butte, Montana where his brother Laurence was living. From his Declaration of Intention (to become a US citizen), made in Montana in March 1911, we know that Eugene was working as a miner in Butte at the time and that he was was 5ft 11ins tall with light brown hair and blue eyes.

Sometime prior to 1920 Eugene moved to the San Francisco area where it is known he worked as a foreman in the shipyards, a steelworker (as per the 1920 census), an automobile mechanic and eventually a labourer doing odd jobs (as per the 1930 census). It is known that he was living in San Mateo, south of San Francisco, in 1920. At some point during the 1920s he visited his brother Michael in Denver and gave each of Michael's children $5, a big sum in those days.

Eugene died tragically at the age of 50 when a fire broke out at his home on Tara St. in San Francisco. His wife, Margaret, was away at the time visiting in the San Mateo area, when in the early hours of Sunday, 28 July 1935 the fire department was alerted to the fire at 283 Tara St. It is believed that Eugene had been smoking his pipe and listening to the radio as usual in the sitting room before going to bed and that the blaze was caused by the pipe which had been left smouldering in the sitting room. The fire was confined to the sitting room but Eugene died from "carbon monoxide poisoning, first and second degree burns to his face, arms, chest and legs". The coroner's report adds that "a quart bottle containing some wine was found in the bedroom".

Eugene married Margaret CLAFFEY, daughter of John CLAFFEY and Bridget BYRNE, on 15 Feb 1920 in St. Michael's Church, San Francisco. Margaret was born about 1884 in Corramore, Kiltoom, Co. Roscommon. She died after 28 Jul 1935. She was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, California.

Margaret and her first husband, Eugene Morahan, had no children. They lived at 283 Tara St. in San Francisco, just around the corner from Margaret's sister Cecilia and her family who lived at 511 Mount Vernon Avenue. It is believed that Margaret and Eugene struggled financially.

Margaret's second marriage, to John Gibbons, was apparently arranged by a matchmaker named John Nerney.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage of Eugene and Margaret were Thomas Nerney and Agnes Naylor.

  78 M vii
Patrick (Paddy) MORAHAN was born on 21 Oct 1887 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was christened on 23 Oct 1887 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 5 Mar 1965 in Houston, Texas. He was buried on 8 Mar 1965 in Memorial Oaks Cemetery, Houston, Texas.

Sponsors at Paddy's baptism were John Morahan and Mary Hunt.

Paddy emigrated to the United States in 1911. According to Ellis Island records, he and his sister-in-law, Emily, (wife of his brother, Michael) travelled together, arriving in New York on 5 October 1911. On the ship manifest, Paddy's occupation was given as "clerk" and his final destination was Houston, Texas where his brother, Lawrence, lived. There is another Ellis Island record showing a re-entry to the U.S. for Paddy on 20 November 1922. By this time his home was Houston and he was a U.S. citizen having been naturalised in 1920. From Paddy's Declaration of Intention (to become an US citizen), made in Houston in January 1914, we know he was 5ft 9ins and had brown hair and grey eyes.

Paddy worked as a salesman for Standard Printing and Litho in Houston from 1911 until 1947 and then as a salesman for two other companies until 1962. Apparently his family was displeased when he married Opal, who was a divorcée.

Paddy's death was due to a heart attack. He died in Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston.

Patrick married Opal Emma COLLIER, daughter of George Wesley COLLIER and Sarah SANDERS, on 29 Jul 1947 in County Clerk's Office, Houston, Texas. Opal was born on 5 May 1906 in Oklahoma. She died on 5 Jul 1974 in 4404 Junius St., Dallas, Texas. She was buried on 12 Jul 1974 in Dallas City Cemetery.

From Opal's death certificate we know she had worked as a clerk in a drug store. The cause of death was "arteriosclerotic heart disease".

William H. MORAHAN was born on 20 Sep 1889 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was christened on 21 Sep 1889 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 24 Apr 1912 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was buried in Jamestown Cemetery, Co. Leitrim.

William died of pneumonia aged only 22, four months after the death of his younger sister, Gretta.
+ 80 M ix Thomas (Tom) J. MORAHAN was born on 24 Jan 1891. He died on 10 Apr 1949.
  81 F x
Margaret (Gretta) Mary MORAHAN was born in Jun 1894 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She was christened on 23 Jun 1894 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She died on 1 Jan 1912 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She was buried on 3 Jan 1912 in Jamestown Cemetery, Co. Leitrim.

According to family sources, Gretta died of tuberculosis, although the cause of death given on her death record is nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys), the duration of which was a year. She was only 17 years old.

27. Bridget (Biddy) MORAHAN (John , 'unknown' ) was born about 15 Jul 1847 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She was christened on 17 Jul 1847 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She died in probably Coraughrim, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

Sponsors at Biddy's baptism were John Morahan and Catherine McGowan.

I have been told that Biddy died on 13 October 1925 in Cartron, Boyle, Co. Roscommon aged 74, the informant on the death certificate being a daughter, Katie Hunt. While our Bridget above did have a daughter named Kate, Kate married in 1922 so her surname in 1925 would not have been Hunt. Furthermore, I am unaware of a family connection with Cartron. Therefore I believe that the Bridget Hunt who died in Cartron in 1925 was not our Bridget above. If I have got it wrong I would be very grateful if you would get in touch. Dominick HUNT was born on 8 Mar 1884 in Coraughrim, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

Unfortunately we have no further information on Dominick.

There was a Dominick Hunt who was born in the same area and around the same time as our Dominick above, and who briefly served in the Royal Navy before emigrating to the United States in 1907. However this is not our Dominick above, although he was apparently related to the Coraughrim Hunts. Hunt researchers may be interested in this other Dominick's story: he was a son of John Hunt (c.1834-1912) and Bridget McGlynn (1853-1940) who lived in Coryolish (or Corryolus), Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. Passenger records from Dominick's voyage to the U.S. in 1907 tell us he was joining his brother James in Brooklyn, New York. This Dominick's World War I Draft Registration Card tells that by 1918 he was living in Grass Range, Montana and working in farming. He never married and died aged 38 on 6 Apr 1922 in Warm Springs, Montana of "exhaustion of manic depressive insanity". According to a public family tree on the Ancestry website, this Dominick had been a successful rancher and left a sizeable estate.

A Dominick Hunt, aged 17, is listed in the 1901 census as an "apprentice", presumably in the grocery and pub business owned by the family he was living with at the time (Fox) in Carrick-on-Shannon town. Was he our Dominick above or was he the Dominick who lived in Montana?

There was also a Dominck Hunt who was living in Rincurreen, Co. Leitrim in 1940s who may have been Dominick above.
