Fourth Generation

(Continued)

53. Bridget (Bertha) O'HARA (Laurence O'HARA , Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN , 'unknown' ) was born about 14 Dec 1896 in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 14 Dec 1896 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died on 1 Oct 1948 in 94 Lower Leeson St., Dublin. She was buried on 4 Oct 1948 in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin (grave OH 71.5, St. Bridget's).

Bertha seems to be listed as Delia Mary in the 1911 census.

She and her husband, Michael, may also have had a daughter named Mary.

Bertha died aged only 51.

Bridget married Michael B. FOLEY, son of Michael FOLEY, on 26 Jul 1928 in Cootehall, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Michael was born in 1898 in near Boyle, Co. Roscommon. He died on 27 Jul 1970 in 4 Castlefields, Dungannon. Co. Tyrone. He was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dungannon. Co. Tyrone.

Michael (often known as Barney) was the eldest of nine children. He attended Summerhill College, Co Sligo where he was awarded a County Exhibition Scholarship for his academic achievements. He graduated from University College Galway in 1921 with a civil engineering degree. However, jobs in engineering were scarce in Ireland at that time due to social, political and economic conditions so Michael turned to teaching. He worked as a maths and geography teacher at St. Patrick's Boys' Academy in Dungannon, Co. Tyrone from 1921 until he retired around 1963. He continued working as a substitute teacher following his retirement at both the Boys' Academy and the adjacent Girls' Academy (the two schools later amalgamated).

He and his first wife, Bertha, lived in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Michael would work in Dungannon during the week and return home at weekends to Clegna. Following his marriage to Phyllis, he settled permanently in Dungannon where he and Phyllis lived at 4 Castlefields.

They had the following children.

Catherine (Kitty) FOLEY was born about 1932 in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1976.

Kitty and her husband, Gordon, were first cousins through the O'Haras. Their mothers were sisters.

Catherine married Lawrence Gordon (Gordon) DOYLE, son of Arthur Peter DOYLE and Mary Catherine (Kathleen) O'HARA. Lawrence was born about 1929 in New Ross, Co. Wexford. He died in 2007. He was buried in New Ross, Co. Wexford.

Gordon lived in New Ross. He remarried following the death of his first wife, Kitty. He had no children with Kitty, and three with his second wife, Mary.

54. Mary Catherine (Kathleen) O'HARA (Laurence O'HARA , Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN , 'unknown' ) was born on 7 Aug 1900 in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died on 4 Dec 1984 in Co. Wexford. She was buried in St. Stephen's Cemetery, New Ross, Co. Wexford.

Kathleen was a nurse. Prior to her marriage she worked in St. Vincent's Hosptal in Dublin.

Mary married Arthur Peter DOYLE, son of Arthur Joseph DOYLE and Mary Jane 'UNKNOWN', on 24 Jun 1926 in Dublin. Arthur was born about 1891 in New Ross, Co. Wexford. He died on 10 May 1974. He was buried in St. Stephen's Cemetery, New Ross, Co. Wexford.

Arthur and Kathleen met as a result of match-making efforts by Kathleen's aunt Sr. Jerome Gordon. Sr. Jerome worked in St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin where Arthur's father, also named Arthur, was a patient. Knowing that Arthur senior had eligible sons, she arranged for Kathleen, who was a nurse, to look after him in New Ross when he was discharged from St. Vincent's.

After their marriage, Kathleen and Arthur lived in New Ross, Co. Wexford.

They had the following children.

+ 139 M i Arthur Joseph DOYLE was born in 1927. He died on 23 Nov 1991.
+ 140 M ii Lawrence Gordon (Gordon) DOYLE was born about 1929. He died in 2007.

56. Matilda (Maud) Mary O'HARA (Laurence O'HARA , Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN , 'unknown' ) was born on 28 May 1906 in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died on 21 Feb 1976 in Dublin. She was buried on 24 Feb 1976 in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin (grave OH 71.5, St. Bridget's).

Maud was a nurse. She and her husband, Oliver, lived in Shankill, Co. Dublin.

Matilda married Living on 12 Oct 1949 in St. Andrew's Church, Westland Row, Dublin.

They had the following children.

  143 F i Living.
  144 M ii Living.

59. Emily Marion LOGAN (John Joseph LOGAN , Winifred MEEHAN , 'unknown' ) was born on 22 May 1884 in Greatmeadow, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 1 Jun 1884 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She died on 7 Jul 1966 in Denver, Colorado. She was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Golden, Colorado.

Sponsors at Emily's baptism were John McHugh and and Honora Connaughton.

It is known that Emily and Joseph were somehow related. The connection seems to be through the Meehans: Emily's grandfather on her father's side married a Winifred Meehan who, it is thought, was closely related to (perhaps a sister of) Ellen Meehan who was Michael's grandmother on his mother's side. If Winifred and Ellen were indeed sisters, this would have made Emily and Michael second cousins.

Emily used to sign her name as Emily Maurine Morahan so it is possible that her middle name may have been Maurine rather than Marion.

Emily died in the Mercy Hospital in Denver.

Emily married Michael Joseph MORAHAN, son of Owen MORAHAN and Margaret O'HARA, on 7 Sep 1910 in St. Patrick's Church, Galway. Michael was born on 13 Jul 1879 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was christened on 14 Jul 1879 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 7 Mar 1959 in Denver, Colorado.

I AM INDEBTED TO DAN MORAHAN OF PINE, COLORADO FOR ALL HIS HELP WITH MY MORAHAN RESEARCH.

Sponsors at Michael's baptism were William O'Hara and Mary Ellen Doyle.

Michael worked on the railroads in Ireland and England prior to emigrating to the United States where from 1903 to 1948 he worked as an locomotive engineer with Chicago, Burlington & Quincy in Lincoln, Nebraska. Michael returned to Ireland in 1910 in Ireland to marry Emily Logan. The following month Michael returned to Lincoln and Emily lived with her in-laws until she joined her husband in the United States a year later. According to the ship manifest, Michael lived at the time at 33 S. 10th St., Lincoln.

Michael and Emily later moved to Denver, Colorado, where Michael worked for Colorado Southern. He was engineer on the first diesel engine used by Colorado Southern in Colorado.

Note: Michael had a cousin named Patrick Mullany who lived in New York City in 1910. According to Ellis Island records Michael was going to join Patrick in New York prior to his return to Nebraska. It is possible that Michael may have been related to Patrick through his aunt, Ellen O'Hara, who was married to a Patrick MULLEANY. Perhaps Ellen and Patrick had a son named Patrick who emigrated to the United States. There is another MULLEANY connection in that Patrick O'Hara who was Ellen's first cousin once removed was married to a Mary Jane Mulleany.

They had the following children.
