Sponsors at Mary's baptism were John Morahan and Jane Murray.

Witnesses to Mary's marriage to Cormac Gordon were John Gordon and Belinda Morahan. Presumably Belinda was Mary's sister, Linda.

Mary died in St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin following complications from a hernia operation carried out at either St. Vincents' or the hospital in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. The cause of death, according to the death record, was 'strangulated intestinal hernia (5 days)' and 'cardiac failure'.

Mary married Cormac GORDON, son of Thomas GORDON and Anne FOLEY, on 7 Feb 1906 in Jamestown, Co. Leitrim. Cormac was born on 26 Feb 1870 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died on 13 Sep 1939 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was buried on 15 Sep 1939 in Fairymount Cemetery, Co. Roscommon.

She is buried with her aunt Lizzie McDonnell (née Gordon) and her first cousins Annie and Emma McDonnell in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin. I am told that this grave is located beside those of other relatives, including Emma's aunts Kathleen Clarke (née Gordon) and Bea O'Hara (née Gordon).

+ 110 M viii Cormac GORDON was born on 20 May 1921. He died on 8 Nov 2009.

39. Michael Joseph MORAHAN (Margaret O'HARA , Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN , 'unknown' ) was born on 13 Jul 1879 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was christened on 14 Jul 1879 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 7 Mar 1959 in Denver, Colorado.

I AM INDEBTED TO DAN MORAHAN OF PINE, COLORADO FOR ALL HIS HELP WITH MY MORAHAN RESEARCH.

Sponsors at Michael's baptism were William O'Hara and Mary Ellen Doyle.

Michael worked on the railroads in Ireland and England prior to emigrating to the United States where from 1903 to 1948 he worked as an locomotive engineer with Chicago, Burlington & Quincy in Lincoln, Nebraska. Michael returned to Ireland in 1910 in Ireland to marry Emily Logan. The following month Michael returned to Lincoln and Emily lived with her in-laws until she joined her husband in the United States a year later. According to the ship manifest, Michael lived at the time at 33 S. 10th St., Lincoln.

Michael and Emily later moved to Denver, Colorado, where Michael worked for Colorado Southern. He was engineer on the first diesel engine used by Colorado Southern in Colorado.

Note: Michael had a cousin named Patrick Mullany who lived in New York City in 1910. According to Ellis Island records Michael was going to join Patrick in New York prior to his return to Nebraska. It is possible that Michael may have been related to Patrick through his aunt, Ellen O'Hara, who was married to a Patrick MULLEANY. Perhaps Ellen and Patrick had a son named Patrick who emigrated to the United States. There is another MULLEANY connection in that Patrick O'Hara who was Ellen's first cousin once removed was married to a Mary Jane Mulleany.

Michael married Emily Marion LOGAN, daughter of John Joseph LOGAN and Anne (Annie) Josephine MCPARTLAND, on 7 Sep 1910 in St. Patrick's Church, Galway. Emily was born on 22 May 1884 in Greatmeadow, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 1 Jun 1884 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She died on 7 Jul 1966 in Denver, Colorado. She was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Golden, Colorado.

Sponsors at Emily's baptism were John McHugh and and Honora Connaughton.

It is known that Emily and Joseph were somehow related. The connection seems to be through the Meehans: Emily's grandfather on her father's side married a Winifred Meehan who, it is thought, was closely related to (perhaps a sister of) Ellen Meehan who was Michael's grandmother on his mother's side. If Winifred and Ellen were indeed sisters, this would have made Emily and Michael second cousins.

Emily used to sign her name as Emily Maurine Morahan so it is possible that her middle name may have been Maurine rather than Marion.

Emily died in the Mercy Hospital in Denver.

They had the following children.

  111 F i
Florence Camilla MORAHAN was born on 18 Jul 1912 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She died on 9 Feb 2003 in Westminster, Colorado. She was buried on 15 Feb 2003 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Golden, Colorado.

Florence worked as an industrial nurse for the Denver Tramway Company.

Frances (Frank) Joseph MORAHAN was born on 26 Nov 1915 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He died on 9 Nov 1995 in Denver, Colorado. He was buried in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Sheridan, Colorado.

Frank was a master electrician and served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II.
+ 114 M iv Lawrence (Larry) Patrick MORAHAN was born on 2 May 1921. He died on 22 Feb 1987.

Gerald Thomas MORAHAN was born on 15 Sep 1926 in West Byron Place, Denver, Colorado. He died on 4 Jun 1998 in Michigan. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Golden, Colorado (Dominican plot).

Gerald  was ordained a priest  in the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in 1952 in Dubuque, Iowa. His religious name was Bertrand and he spent his entire ministry working in parishes, beginning at St. Margaret Parish, Boyce, Louisiana. In 1956 he was assigned to St. Vincent Ferrer parish, River Forest, Illinois, and in 1958 he was sent to Holy Name parish, Kansas City, Missouri. In 1970 he returned to St. Vincent Ferrer parish, where he spent the next 13 years, after which he began ministry at a new parish, St. Gertrude's, in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. He served there as an associate pastor until his death 15 years later.

41. Bridget Linda (Linda) MORAHAN (Margaret O'HARA , Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN , 'unknown' ) was born in Mar 1883 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She was christened on 19 Mar 1883 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She died on 30 Apr 1958 in Hollymount, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon. She was buried in Ardcarne Cemetery, Hollymount, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon.

This picture of Linda was taken on the occasion of her engagement. She married Joe Molloy in July 1918 so it is likely the photo was taken in 1917.

Note: Cyril Mattimoe, a relative of Joe's, did extensive research into the Molloy family in the late 1970s and late 1980s. In his notes, alongside a reference to the marriage of Linda and Joe, is a mention of the marriage in 1849 of an Edward Molloy and an Anna Morahan. There is no further refernce to Edward or Anna in Cyril's notes so we cannot tell if they were related to Joe or Linda. This needs to be looked into.

Bridget married Joseph (Joe) Kevin MOLLOY, son of Martin MOLLOY and Anne SIMON, on 8 Jul 1918 in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. Joseph was born on 2 Jun 1878 in Ballyfermoyle, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died on 10 Apr 1948 in Hollymount, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon. He was buried in Ardcarne Cemetery, Hollymount, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon.

Joe was one of a family of 19 children (five from his father's first marriage and 14 from his second). According to his marriage record, Joe was a farmer and was living at the time in Derrynargon, Carrick-on-Shannon.

Joe and Linda left Derreenargon around 1940 and moved to a farm in Hollymount, Carrick-on-Shannon.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage of Joseph and Linda were Edward A. Molloy and Liz Noone.

  122 F vii Living.
+ 123 F viii Margaret (Rita) MOLLOY was born on 21 Apr 1927. She died on 2 May 2020.

45. Thomas (Tom) J. MORAHAN (Margaret O'HARA , Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN , 'unknown' ) was born on 24 Jan 1891 in Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He was christened on 25 Jan 1891 in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 10 Apr 1949 in Dublin. He was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Thomas was a primary school teacher. In 1912 he was appointed principal of Annaduff National School outside Carrick-on-Shannon. However, the locals objected to the job going to an outsider, so they organised a boycott. A drum would sound in protest every morning at 10 o'clock; parents withdrew their children and sent them to other schools further away; the school was broken into and record books were taken; and Tom had to escorted to and from school by gardaí from Dromad and Dromsna stations. Tensions ran high for at least a year, but, thanks to the intervention of another teacher in the school, parents eventually started sending their children back, and Tom continued to teach at Annaduff until shortly before his death in 1949 at the age of 58. He had been suffering from tuberculosis for 16 years and died in Hume St. Hospital in Dublin.

Thomas married Mary LAYDEN / LEYDEN, daughter of Michael LAYDEN, on 7 Aug 1918 in St. Patrick's Church, Drumkeeran, Co. Leitrim. Mary was born about 1886. She died on 30 Jun 1976 in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. She was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Mary was a member of the Layden family which owned the Arigna coalmine in Co. Roscommon. According to her marriage record, she was a primary school teacher from Spencer Harbour; her father was a farmer. Witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Doyle and Tessie Layden. It is believed Mary and her huusband, Tom Morahan, were in some way related but I have been unable to establish exactly how.

I am told Mary and Tom lived in the old Morahan family home in Cloonfeacle for a number of years before moving to Summerhill in Carrick-on-Shannon. The farm portion of the 23-acre Morahan property was sold in the 1930s so the move to Summerhill may have been made around then. The family was definitely living in Summerhill by 1942 as the death record of their 17-year-old daughter Bernadette, who died that year, gives her home address as Summerhill. It is though that Mary moved to Dublin after Tom's death in 1949.

They had the following children.

+ 124 M i Kevin MORAHAN was born about 1919. He died.
+ 125 F ii Veronica (Vera) MORAHAN was born in 1921. She died in Jul 1998.
  126 F iii
Bernadette MORAHAN was born about 1924 in possibly Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon. She died on 25 Jan 1942 in Our Lady's Hospice, Harold's Cross, Dublin. She was buried in Dominican Covent, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.

Bernadette entered the convent, joining the Dominican order in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. She died very soon afterwards however of sarcoma of the thigh aged just 17.

47. Thomas MORAN (Bridget O'HARA , Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN , 'unknown' ) was born on 23 Jan 1890 in Sheerevagh, Ballinameen, Co. Roscommon.

Thomas was a civil servant. At the time of his marriage in 1928 he was living in Dublin.

Thomas married Mary Ellen SHANNON, daughter of Andrew SHANNON and Ellen MURPHY, on 1 Oct 1928 in Dublin. Mary was born on 18 Nov 1897 in Paulstown, Co. Kilkenny.

They had the following children.

+ 127 M i Living.

49. Evelyn (Eva) Mary O'HARA (Laurence O'HARA , Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN , 'unknown' ) was born about 13 Jul 1889 in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 13 Jul 1889 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died on 12 Oct 1954 in Oxhill, Knockvicar, Co. Roscommon.

Evelyn married James (Jim) GLYNN, son of Patrick GLYNN, on 1 Mar 1916 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. James was born in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. He died on 26 Jul 2955 in Oxhill, Knockvicar, Co. Roscommon.

Jim was from Oxhill, Knockvicar, Boyle, Co. Roscommon, where he and Evelyn lived after their marriage.

Note: There is a record of a marriage of a Thomas Glynn and Elizabeth Logan in Cootehall on 16 February 1880. Thomas's father's name was Patrick and Thomas's address was given as what looks like 'Cuidera'. Were Jim and Thomas related?

They had the following children.

Kathleen (Sr. Evelyn) GLYNN was born in 1929 in Knockvicar, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She died on 7 Mar 2013 in Cork.

Kathleen was a sister in the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (OCSO), an enclosed order.  According to her obituary in the St. Mary's Abbey newsletter, she inherited musical talent from her mother, Evelyn, and studied in England, obtaining a Licentiate from the Guild Hall of Music, London, and a second Diploma from Trinity College of Music, London. She taught music in England for a time before returning to Ireland in 1957 when he entered the OCSO convent at St. Mary's Abbey, Glencairn, Lismore, Co. Waterford. She made First Profession on 27 December 1959 and Solemn Profession exactly three years later. Known as Sr. Evelyn she spent most of the rest of her life at St. Mary's.
