Many thanks go to Tom McEnery of New York City and Tom Moloney of Duagh, Co. Kerry for so much of the information you see below on the McEnery family of Tubbertureen, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Note that there are various older spellings of Tubbertureen, including Toberatoreen and Toberatureen.
If we go by Griffiths Valuation, carried out in 1852 for Co. Kerry, it appears that the family of Thomas above were the only McEnerys occupying land in Tubbertureen at that time. Griffiths tells us that Thomas leased three parcels of land in Tubbertureen: the home plot was 94 acres and he also leased a plot of seven acres and one of 152 acres. In the following years he increased his holding to a total of 688 acres. Although much of this was bog, it was a considerable farm for an Irish tenant farmer of the time. Although Thomas died in 1875 his name is crossed out in the valuation revision of 1872, replaced by the names of his sons, Denis and Michael, so it appears Thomas had handed over the running of the farm to his sons by 1872.
Note from Helen: Although I am not directly connected to Thomas's family, two members of my Hudson family from Kilbaha, Newtownsandes married descendants of Thomas: Mary Hudson married Thomas's son Michael in 1868, and Mary's niece Mag Hudson married Michael's nephew Den McEnery in 1916. Through my research into the Hudsons I came across much information on the McEnery family of Tubbertureen which is included on this website for McEnery researchers.
