Descendants of William HUDSON (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Fourth Generation

20. Robert HUDSON (Edward , Edward , William ) was born in 1842 in probably Tralee, Co. Kerry. He died on 18 Feb 1917 in Gortmore House, Strand St., Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Robert became a medical doctor, having graduated in 1865 from either the Royal College of Surgeons or Trinity College in Dublin. Although it is believed he moved to Dingle, Co. Kerry around 1870, his address at the time of his marriage in 1885 was Kilflynn (near Tralee), Co. Kerry. Besides his Dingle practice he had dispensaries in Ventry and Murreigh, both near Dingle, and he also provided medical attention to the people of the Blasket Islands, once being marooned there for a week due to rough weather. Robert spent 36 years working in the Dingle area. He lived at Bridge House in Dingle until about 1906 when he retired to Tralee, moving back to to Gortmore House on Strand St., his old family home.

Robert owned a number of properties in and around Tralee (on the Mall, Castle St., Dominick St., Blennerville and Blackpoole), which eventually passed to his daughter Saidie.

Robert married Maria L. A. MASON, daughter of John MASON and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Anne HUGGARD, on 8 Jan 1885 in Kilflynn, Co. Kerry. Maria was born about 13 Sep 1855 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 15 Sep 1855 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. She died on 30 Apr 1956 in 'Thorndene', Monkstown, Dublin.

Maria was from Dingle where her husband, Robert, had a medical practice. Maria and Robert eventually moved to Tralee, Co. Kerry. It is possible that Maria was born in March or April of 1856 as a baptismal record has been located on the Irish Genealogy website, www.irishgenealogy.ie, for a Mary (Maria and Mary are synonymous) Mason whose father's name was John and who was baptised in Dingle on 6 April 1856. According to the baptismal record, Mary's mother's name was Elizabeth (the last name isn't provided).

In 1921, four years after Robert's death, Maria moved from Tralee to Dublin with her daughter Roberta and possibly her other daughter, Saidie, leaving Gortmore House, the Hudson family home in Tralee, to the Bon Secours order which set up a hospital on the property. After a couple of years in Dublin Maria bought 'Thorndene' at 87 Monkstown Road in Monkstown where she lived for the rest of her life. I am told that Maria was 101 years of age when she died in 1956 (although her age in the 1911 census is given as 48, about eight years younger than she would have been if she had been born about 1856).

Note: a Thomas Hudson of Tralee, whose wife's name was Elizabeth Ann, had a son named John baptised (into the Protestant faith) in Tralee on 20 September 1881. Was Thomas related to our Hudson family? Could he have been a son of Maria and Robert?

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were Richard Huggard and Edward Hudson. The marriage was solemnised by the Rev. Charles Conry, Church of Ireland curate of Ardfert.

Robert and Maria had the following children.

+ 33 M i Edward HUDSON was born on 3 Nov 1885. He died on 1 Apr 1967.
+ 34 M ii Richard Francis Huggard HUDSON was born on 23 Nov 1886. He died on 20 Feb 1954.
  35 F iii
Elizabeth Roberta (Roberta) HUDSON was born on 16 Nov 1888 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 28 Dec 1888 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. She died on 12 Oct 1930 in 'Thorndene', Monkstown, Dublin.

Elizabeth, who was known by her middle name, Roberta, never married. She died aged only 41. According to a family source she died of pleurisy but her death certificate gives the cause of death as "general wasting and debility, cardiac syncope".
  36 F iv
Sarah (Saidie) Stephena HUDSON was born on 26 Dec 1889 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 16 Feb 1890 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. She died on 21 Jun 1968 in Tralee, Co. Kerry. She was buried in New Cemetery, Rock St., Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Saidie never married. She lived at Thornedene, 87 Monkstown Road in Dublin but died in a Tralee nursing home.
  37 M v
Robert Charles Conroy (Charlie) HUDSON was born on 27 Jul 1891 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 9 Dec 1891 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. He died on 17 Oct 1918 in Hamilton Military Hospital, Ontario, Canada. He was buried in Hamilton Cemetery, Ontario, Canada.

In 1910, after leaving school, Charlie started work as a clerk with the Provincial Bank of Ireland (now AIB) in Limerick. He later moved to Canada where lived in Islington, Ontario and worked as a construction foremen. He enlisted during World War I and served with the Canadian Railway Troops. His enlistment papers give the following further information:

Date and place of enlistment: 11 July 1917, Toronto
Height: 5 feet, 3¾ inches
Complexion: Medium
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Dark.

We do not know whether Charlie served overseas during World War I but we do know that he died of pneumonia at the age of 27, 15 months after enlisting. On 14 October 1918 he had been admitted to Hamilton Military Hospital in Ontario where he died three days later.
+ 38 M vi John Victor Alexander HUDSON was born on 27 Jan 1897. He died on 6 Jan 1941.
+ 39 M vii William Oliver HUDSON was born on 16 Sep 1901. He died on 6 Apr 1977.

25. Edward (Edmond) HUDSON (Richard , William? , William ) was born about 9 Mar 1816 in Bunagara, Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 9 Mar 1816 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. He died on 10 Oct 1883 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I am very grateful to Hudson descendant Tom Moloney of Duagh, Co. Kerry who has kindly shared the results of his extensive research into the Hudson family. Tom's information is included below.

Sponsors at the baptism of Edmond above were Dermot Finucane and Mary Halpin.

Edmond and his sister Johanna were the only members of Richard and Margaret Hudson's family who did not emigrate. In 1999 everyone living in Kilbaha with a Hudson surname was descended from Edmond; this may still be the case.

In the 1850s Edmond was renting about 80 acres in the townland of Kilbaha North from his Protestant relative Edward Hudson (who owned all the land - about 440 acres - in Kilbaha North). In 1915, a number of these descendants bought out Edward's Kilbaha lands at a low price. Further details on the purchase are available in William Hudson's volume 'The Hudsons of Kilbaha North' which may be studied in the library in Tralee, Co. Kerry.

According to the notes of Kilbaha researcher Bill Hudson, whose works on the history of his Hudson family of Kilbaha have been donated to Tralee and Listowel libraries, Edmond must have been quite well off seeing that he was able to afford to have a headstone erected for his wife, Nora (who died in 1876), which most of his neighbours would not have been able to do at the time.

Edward married Hanora (Nora) CONNOR, daughter of William CONNOR and Mary WALSH, on 21 Jan 1841 in Duagh, Co. Kerry. Hanora was born about 28 Feb 1819 in Rathoran, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 2 Mar 1819 in Duagh, Co. Kerry. She died on 20 Sep 1876 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Nora was from Rathoran, Duagh, as was Bridget O'Connor, mother-in-law of Nora's grandson James Edward Hudson. Were Nora and Bridget related?

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were Michael Moore and John Connor.

Edward and Hanora had the following children.

  40 M i
Richard HUDSON was born about 10 Feb 1842 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 12 Feb 1842. He died in 1842 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Richard's baptism were Richard Walsh and Mary Walsh.
+ 41 M ii Richard HUDSON was born about 3 Feb 1843. He died on 26 Nov 1915.
+ 42 M iii William HUDSON was born about 23 May 1844. He died on 2 May 1928.
+ 43 F iv Mary HUDSON was born about 1846. She died in possibly 7 Mar 1916.
+ 44 M v Edmond HUDSON was born about 1850. He died on 11 Jan 1878.
+ 45 F vi Margaret HUDSON was born about 3 Jun 1852. She died on 14 May 1910.
+ 46 F vii Brigid HUDSON was born about 21 Feb 1856. She died in 1943.
  47 F viii
Johanna HUDSON was born about 1857 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died on 12 Oct 1865 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

According to her death certificate Johanna died from "Inflammation of the stomach". The certificate also tells us that she was five years old. However, we have been told that Johanna was born about 1857, which would make her about eight years of age at the time of her death. There is some confusion about Johanna and her younger sister, Hanora, who seems to have gone by the name Johanna. It could be that Hanora was called Johanna by the family after the death of her sister Johanna. Another possibility is that it was Hanora who died on 12 October 1865  - she would have been five years of age at this time - and an incorrect name was written on the death certificate.
  48 M ix
Jeremiah (Jer) HUDSON was born in Feb 1858 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 24 Feb 1858. He died in 27 May 1927 or 20 Jul 1927 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Jer emigrated to Australia (where his brother Edmond and sister Brigid were already living), but returned home a number of years later (before 2 April 1911) and lived with his sister Margaret Moloney and her family in Sluicequarter, Duagh, Co. Kerry. Jer never married.

According to the notes of Hudson researcher Bill Hudson, Jer had "sandy hair and was very religious" and "was gentle with children."

I have been given two dates of death for Jer, 27 May 1927 and 20 July 1927, but I have not been able to determine which is correct.
+ 49 F x Hanora (Johanna) HUDSON was born about 1 May 1860. She died on 1 Mar 1932.

26. William HUDSON (Richard , William? , William ) was born about 1819 in probably Trieneragh, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died on 2 Jul 1893 in Philadelphia. He was buried in Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.

William worked as a labourer in Philadelphia and helped his brother Frank in his plastering business. According to his death certificate, William died at his home in Suffolk St., Philadelphia of "phthisis" (a form of tuberculosis). William had a white beard and smoked a pipe.

William married Ellen WALSH about 1851. Ellen was born about 1821 in Ireland. She died on 22 May 1903 in Philadelphia. She was buried in probably Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.

They had the following children.

+ 50 M i Richard Dennis HUDSON was born in 1852. He died on 10 Jul 1892.
  51 M ii
Edmund/Edward HUDSON was born in 1854 in Philadelphia. He died on 7 Jul 1908 in Philadelphia. He was buried in Old Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.

According to the 1870 census, Edmond (or Edward) was a clerk in a store. He eventually became a house painter and died as a result of injuries sustained in a fall from a balcony he was painting. He was unmarried.
  52 F iii
Ellen HUDSON was born about 1857 in Philadelphia.
  53 F iv
Mary Ann HUDSON was born in 1860 in Philadelphia. She died in 1860 in Philadelphia.
  54 F v
Sarah HUDSON died.

27. Johanna HUDSON (Richard , William? , William ) was born about 24 Nov 1820 in probably Trieneragh, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 26 Nov 1820 in Duagh, Co. Kerry. She died on 1 Dec 1897 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Johanna's mother's name appears as Mary (rather than Margaret) on her baptismal record (as provided on www.irishgenealogy.ie).

It is possible that Johanna and her family were living in Gortmore House (the old Hudson family home and now the Bon Secours Hospital) on Strand Street in Tralee at the time of her marriage in 1847 as she and Bryan were married there. It was common practice at the time to marry in the bride's home; after 1850 it became mandatory to marry in a church.

According to Tom Sheehan of Kilbaha, one of her great-grandnephews, Johanna was remembered as "a very tall and strong lady who could carry a heavy sack of meal up a hill". She and Bryan may have had more children than those listed below.

Johanna married Bryan CUNNINGHAM, son of Myles CUNNINGHAM and Johanna LYONS / LYNES, in 1847 in Gortmore House, Strand St., Tralee, Co. Kerry. Bryan was born in 1822 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died on 7 Jul 1901 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

One would have expected that the name Myles would have been given to Bryan's first-born son, following the tradition at the time of naming the eldest son after the child's paternal grandfather. Perhaps Bryan did have a first-born son called Myles who may have died young.

Bryan's death certificate gives his cause of death as "debility from old age". His son Richie was present at his death.

They had the following children.

+ 55 M i John CUNNINGHAM was born about 1851. He died on 1 Jan 1930.
+ 56 M ii Richard (Richie Bryan) CUNNINGHAM was born about 2 Jun 1852. He died on 24 Dec 1926.
+ 57 F iii Johanna CUNNINGHAM was born about 17 Jun 1854. She died on 12 Dec 1927.
  58 M iv
James CUNNINGHAM was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died.

Unfortunately nothing is known of James. There is a 1901 census return for the household of a James Cunningham in Kilbaha North, but it is probable that this relates to James's second cousin, James, who was a son of 'Little Bryan' Cunningham. Both Jameses had sisters named Margaret, and a Maggie Cunningham is listed in the census return as a sister to the head of the household, but the sister of the above James was long married by 1901 and is listed as Margaret Hanrahan in the return for her own family's household elsewhere in Kilbaha.
+ 59 M v Edward CUNNINGHAM was born about 15 Nov 1856. He died on 11 Jan 1924.
+ 60 F vi Margaret CUNNINGHAM was born about 1 Oct 1858. She died in 1918.

28. Richard HUDSON (Richard , William? , William ) was born on 15 Aug 1827 in probably Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died on 14 Sep 1902 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Oshkosh.

Richard emigrated to the United States in 1849. He was a Civil War veteran, having served with the 3rd Regiment of the Wisconsin Cavalry between December 1861 and June 1862. He returned to civilian life before the end of the war as a result of an accident (details unknown) and worked as a stone mason. At the time of the 1900 census he and his wife, Johanna, were living in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Richard married Johanna O'CONNOR on 19 Feb 1854 in St. Paul's Church, Philadelphia. Johanna was born in Jan 1833 in Ireland. She died after 1 Nov 1902 in probably Oshkosh, Wisconsin. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Oshkosh.

Johanna emigrated to the United states in 1849.

They had the following children.

+ 61 F i Mary Anne HUDSON was born in May 1855. She died in 1920.
+ 62 F ii Johanna HUDSON was born on 25 Mar 1858. She died on 24 Jun 1898.
  63 M iii
William HUDSON was born about 1859 in Wisconsin. He died about 1859 in Wisconsin.

William died as an infant.

29. Jeremiah HUDSON (Richard , William? , William ) was born about 1830 in probably Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died on 20 May 1905 in Chicago. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Illinois.

Jeremiah emigrated to the United States in 1860. He and his family lived in New Jersey before settling in Chicago. It is believed that Jeremiah lived with his daughter, Clara, and her family after the death of Martha, his wife.

Jeremiah married Martha MCLOUGHLIN about 1864 in probably Philadelphia area. Martha was born in 1835 in Ireland. She died before 1900. She was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Illinois.

They had the following children.

George and Maggie had no children.
+ 68 F v Johanna HUDSON was born in 1872. She died in 1937.
  69 M vi
William (Willie) HUDSON was born on 19 Sep 1873 in probably Illinois. He died on 24 Dec 1879 in probably Illinois.

Willie died at the age of six.

30. Francis (Frank) John HUDSON (Richard , William? , William ) was born about 1831 in probably Duagh, Co. Kerry; or Listowel, Co. Kerry. He died on 9 Nov 1898 in Philadelphia. He was buried in Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.

According to Bill Hudson's 'The Hudsons of County Kerry and their Descendants', Frank emigrated to the United States with his younger brother Patrick in 1853. However, I have been told by another Hudson family researcher that he emigrated in 1851, departing on 11 June from Liverpool on board the 'Oliver'.

Frank served as a Marine during the Civil War and saw service on the Roanoke with Patrick. Frank settled in Philadelphia where he worked as a plasterer. I have been told Frank and his wife, Margaret, were second cousins once removed and were married by special dispensation. However, if they were related, as is thought, through Margaret's Finucane grandfather (probably named Frank) who it is believed was a brother of Frank Hudson's mother, Margaret Finucane, then they would have been first cousins once removed.

Bill Hudson's work on the Hudsons tells us that Frank had a cousin named Kate Hudson (1848-1888) who emigrated from Ireland to the United States and lived with Frank and his family. It is not clear how exactly Kate fits in to the Hudson family tree. Kate married a Mr. McKay or Mackey and they had a daughter, Maria, who was raised by Frank and Margaret.

Francis married Margaret FINNIGAN, daughter of Francis (Frank) FINNIGAN and Margaret 'UNKNOWN', on 21 Apr 1869 in Church of the Annunciation, Philadelphia. Margaret was born on 10 Apr 1846 in Philadelphia. She died on 26 Nov 1919 in Philadelphia. She was buried on 1 Dec 1919 in Old Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.

Margaret and her husband, Frank Hudson, were either first or second cousins once removed through the Finnigans (the Finnigan family had changed their name from Finucane after their arrival in the United States).

Because Margaret, Frank and their family are listed in the 1880 census return for Margaret's parents' household, it is possible they were living with Margaret's parents at the time.

According to her death certificate Margaret died of "arterio sclerosis, mitral insuffiency, chronic interstitial nephritis".

They had the following children.

  70 F i
Margaret (Maggie) HUDSON was born on 3 Dec 1869 in Philadelphia. She died on 8 May 1923 in Philadelphia. She was buried in Old Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.

Jo died of "acute delation of heart", according to her death certificate. A family source has told me, however, that Jo was a victim of the 1918 flu epidemic. The death certificate also tells us that Jo was single and worked as a telephone operator.
  72 M iii
Francis (Frank) HUDSON was born about 1873 in Philadelphia. He died on 1 Jan 1890 in Philadelphia. He was buried in Old Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.

+ 75 F vi Marie HUDSON was born on 17 Mar 1880. She died on 23 Nov 1978.
+ 76 F vii Helen (Ella) Cecilia HUDSON was born on 13 Feb 1883. She died on 15 Feb 1973.
  77 F viii
Jeanette (Jenny) HUDSON was born about 1888 in Philadelphia. She died on 22 Feb 1890 in Philadelphia. She was buried in Old Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.

Jennie died aged two of whooping cough.

32. Patrick Robert HUDSON (Richard , William? , William ) was born on 13 May 1838 in Drowmcunig, Abbeydorney, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 4 Jun 1838 in Abbeydorney, Co. Kerry. He died on 15 Dec 1914 in Philadelphia. He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Philadelphia.

Patrick's baptismal sponsors were John Murnane and Ellen Carney.

Patrick emigrated to the United States with his brother Francis in 1853, aged only 15. He saw action on the Roanoke, Virginia during the Civil War. He became a US citizen in 1868 and joined the U.S. Marine Corps where he spent the rest of his career.

Patrick died of "chronic valvular disease of the heart".

Patrick married Anna Agnes C. CARROLL, daughter of Nicholas CARROLL and Elizabeth KANE, in Sep 1885 in Philadelphia. Anna was born on 13 Nov 1848 in Liverpool. She died on 23 Dec 1940 in West Philadelphia. She was buried on 27 Dec 1940 in ly Cross Cemetery, Philadelphia.

Anna's parents were from Ballycanew, Co. Wexford. Anna and her family emigrated to the United States from Liverpool in 1851 when she was about three years of age.

Anna worked as a school teacher in Philadelphia for about 30 years up untli 1915.

They had the following children.

She was a brilliant linguist and at the time of her death in 1941 she was head of the Department of Modern Languages at Frankford High School in Philadelphia. Her specialty was French. Her nephew Bill Hudson credits her with instilling in him a love of languages.

Margaret, who never married, died from "oedema(?) of glottis, exophthalmic goitre", the latter now known as Graves disease.
