O'CONNOR Paddy Finucane 3

Patrick (Paddy) Finucane was born in 1899, the eldest child of William and Mary Anne Finucane (see previous photo) of Clounprohus, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

In 1942 Paddy was elected to Kerry County Council. The following year he was elected as TD (Teachta Dála, meaning member of parliament) representing Clann na Talún (the Farmers' Party). He was later elected to the Dáil as an Independent TD. Paddy was never defeated at election time, and in 1969 retired after 26 years in the Dáil. His main achievement as a TD was the implementation of the Cashen drainage scheme which proved vital in the prevention of flooding in north Kerry.

Paddy and his first wife, Lily (formerly Hanrahan), lived in Urlee, Lisselton, Co. Kerry where they raised five children: Mick, Liam, Betty, Mona and Eileen. Sadly, Lily died in 1943 aged only 46. Paddy later married Nuala O’Donnell and they had a daughter, Bernadette. Paddy died in 1984 at the age of 84.
