General Register Office of Ireland

Information on how to apply for copies of civil birth, marriage and death certificates in Ireland. Most records date from 1864. Note that it possible to purchase uncertified photocopies of entries in the registers for just €4 each rather than pay €20 for a certified certificate, which most researchers would not require.

IreAtlas Townland Database

Database of all Irish townlands, towns and parishes as used for the 1851 census of Ireland. Very useful for deciphering placenames on birth, marriage and death certificates.

Irish Times genealogy service providing information on surnames, placenames, parishes, genealogy record repositories, etc.

Irish Genealogy

Website made available by Irish government containing Catholic church records for counties Dublin and Kerry and diocese of Cork and Ross, and Church of Ireland records for counties Carlow and Dublin. Also available are indexes to Catholic civil records of births, marriages and deaths from 1864 and non-Catholic marriages from 1845. Some images of civil records are also available.

Irish Family History Foundation/Roots Ireland

Instructions on how to commission family history searches from county-based heritage centres which have access to census returns, parish records, etc. Some centres provide online access to church and census records.

Irish Newspaper Archives

Searchable archives of several national and provincial newspapers.

Jer Kennelly’s Album Collection
