HUSSEY Austin and boat crew


Augustine (Austin) Hussey is pictured here in the front row on the left. The group are members of the Quintin Boat Club of Chiswick, London, in which Austin was very active.

Austin was the youngest of the seven children of James Hussey and Jane Butler. Born in 1907 in Hammersmith, London, he was commissioned in the Welsh Guards during World War II, Austin served in the Italian campaign and was near Monte Cassino at the time of its destruction. On his return he joined his brothers Stephen and Martin in their building company, Hussey Bros. (Builders) Ltd. which was based in Bayswater, London. The company was primarily involved in the building of Catholic churches, schools and convents.

Austin married Jessie Mackenzie in 1936 and they had twins, Mary and Philip. Sadly, Mary died at birth and Philip was disabled and died in 1971 aged only 33. Jessie died in 1958 and Austin later married Theresa Wheaton. Austin, who lived in Ealing, London for most of his adult life, died in Ealing in 1992 aged 85. Theresa died in 2020 aged 95.
