Sr. Mary Estelle was born Margaret Cunningham in 1898 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (now Moyvane), Co. Kerry to Richard Cunningham and Brigid Dore.
At the age of 17 she and her elder sister Johanna (see previous photo) entered the convent of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Concordia, Kansas.
Sr. Mary Estelle later moved to Belvidere, Illinois where she worked as a nurse for over 30 years at St. Joseph's Hospital. In 1973, due to frail health, she returned to Concordia where she continued to help with nursing duties. She died in Concordia in 1987 aged 89.
Sr. Mary Estelle and Johanna (who became Sr. Mary Ellen) had eight siblings: Molly married Jim Stack and lived in Moyvane South; Brian married Noreen Keane and remained in Kilbaha; Nora married Harry McMahon and lived in Beale, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry; Eileen, who never married, lived in New York and retired to Listowel, Co. Kerry; Jack married Nora Baker and lived in New York; Bridie remained single and lived in Listowel; it is thought Thomas died as a child; and Ellen died at birth.
