Bishop John Francis Cunningham

Bishop John Francis Cunningham

John was born in 1842 in either Irremore or Mountcoal, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry to John Cunningham and Kate Fitzgerald. It appears John emigrated to the United States at the age of about 18 along with his eldest brother, Bryan, and Bryan’s family. They lived initially in Atchison, Kansas, where John studied for the priesthood. He was ordained in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1865. In 1898,  in Leavenworth, Kansas, John was consecrated Bishop of Concordia.

Only two of John’s eight siblings remained in Ireland, the others all having emigrated  to the United States. Two of his four sisters (Ellen and Margaret) lived in Irremore where they raised families, and all four of his brothers (Bryan, Patrick, James and Daniel) settled in either Kansas or Kansas City, Missouri. His two remaining sisters (Mary and Bridget) lived in Kansas.

John died in Concordia in 1919 aged 76.
