Our Carew/Carey family has roots in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary. Edmund Carew, born in Soloheadbeg around 1791 married Mary Gavin and they had 13 children. All but one of their children who survived to adulthood appear to have emigrated, most initially to Newfoundland, and Mary herself eventually moved to Newfoundland (presumably after Edmond’s death). Their son who remained in Ireland, also named Edmond, married Mary Hanley in 1849 and they raised nine children in Soloheadbeg. Martin Monahan, one of their grandchildren is pictured below with his family.
