Descendants of John GORDON (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Fourth Generation

(Continued)

30. Bernard (Barney) GORDON (Martin , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 1850 in probably Eden, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died on 1 Mar 1910 in Eden, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

According to the 1901 census, Barney and his family lived in the townland of Eden (which adjoins Clerragh) in the parish of Tibohine (Tibohine is the old name for Fairymount).

Bernard married Mary MOFFITT, daughter of James MOFFITT and Mary 'UNKNOWN', on 29 Jun 1890 in Fairymount Church. Mary was born about 1867 in probably Cloonfinglas, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died after 2 Apr 1911.

They had the following children.

  159 M i
John GORDON was born about 13 Jun 1891 in Eden, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 13 Jun 1891 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

A John Gordon, single and aged 72 (i.e., born about 1889), died in Eden on 17 December 1963. Although his approximate year of birth does not tie in exactly with the birth date of John above I think it likely that it was John above who died on 17 December 1863 as his is the only Gordon family I am aware of that lived in Eden. According to his death certificate John died of myocarditis and the informant was a James Quinn of [what looks like] Currenturpane.
  160 F ii
Mary GORDON was born about 26 Mar 1893 in Eden, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 26 Mar 1893 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

Mary is not listed as part of the household in the 1901 census. We know that a Mary Gordon, whose mother's maiden name was Moffitt, was born in the Castlerea registration district on 3 April 1904. Perhaps this Mary was a daughter of Barney Gordon and Mary Moffitt, their other daughter named Mary having died.
  161 M iii
Bernard GORDON was born about 23 Feb 1894 in Eden, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 23 Feb 1894 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.
  162 M iv
Patrick (Pat) GORDON was born on 20 Feb 1897 in Eden, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

A death notice for a Patrick Gordon of Eden, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon, who died on 6 November 1975 at his residence, has been located in the Irish Independent. He was deeply regretted by his sister, nephews and niece and was buried in Fairymount Cemetery. Could this Patrick be our Pat above?
  163 F v
Ann (Annie) GORDON was born about 20 May 1899 in Eden, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 20 May 1899 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died.
  164 F vi
Bridget GORDON was born on 21 Jan 1901 in Eden, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died.

31. Michael MORRIS (Bridget GORDON , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 4 Nov 1836. He was christened on 4 Nov 1836 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

Michael married 'UNKNOWN'. 'UNKNOWN' died before 1876.

Michael also married Eleanor RUSH on 20 Apr 1875 in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. Eleanor died.

They had the following children.

  165 F i
Bedelia MORRIS was born about 30 Jul 1876. She was christened on 30 Jul 1876 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon.

33. Timothy (Thady) MORRIS (Bridget GORDON , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 1850 in possibly Clerragh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

Timothy married Bridget HERBERT on 4 Mar 1878 in Loughglynn Church. Bridget was born about 1848.

They had the following children.

  166 M i
John MORRIS was born on 25 Apr 1879 in Clerragh, Co. Roscommon.
  167 F ii
Catherine MORRIS was born on 25 Jul 1880 in Clerragh, Co. Roscommon.
+ 168 M iii Michael John MORRIS was born about 14 Jun 1882.

34. Ellen MORRIS (Bridget GORDON , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 30 Mar 1851. She was christened on 30 Mar 1851 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

Ellen married Timothy HIGGINS on 16 Feb 1871 in Fairymount Church. Timothy was born about 1835.

It is possible that Timothy was a brother of Patrick Higgins who married Mary Frain on 7 February 1866 in Loughglynn. Mary was a daughter of Thomas Frain from Barnacawley in Fairymount and Mary Coffey. Patrick Higgins and Mary Frain had seven children - Thomas, Maria, John, Patrick, Eliza, Julia and Catherine - born between 1866 and 1879, six in Cloonfinglas in Fairymount and one in Stonepark, also in Fairymount. This information comes from Michael Frain, a great-grandson of Thomas Frain and Mary Coffey. Michael would be very grateful for any additional information on his Frain family. He can be contacted at michaelfrain@talktalk.net

They had the following children.

  169 F i
Maria HIGGINS was born on 29 Nov 1871.
  170 M ii
William HIGGINS was born on 12 Jul 1873.
  171 F iii
Catherine Jane HIGGINS was born on 15 Aug 1875.
  172 M iv
Timothy HIGGINS was born about 1 Apr 1877. He was christened on 1 Apr 1877 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.
  173 M v
Michael HIGGINS was born on 1 Nov 1879.
  174 F vi
Ellen HIGGINS was born on 29 Aug 1881.
  175 M vii
Thomas HIGGINS was born about 8 Apr 1882. He was christened on 8 Apr 1882 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

38. Margaret MORRIS (Bridget GORDON , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 23 Sep 1858. She was christened on 23 Sep 1858 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

Margaret married James HELBERT on 31 Jan 1878 in Fairymount Church. James died.

Helbert is an unusual name. There are entries in Griffith's Valuation for Helberts, mostly in Kilteevin (Castlerea) but there are no returns for Helbert in the 1901 census. By the time of the 1911 census, however, there are at least three Helbert families living in Co. Roscommon. Census details of one of these families, which appears to be that of James above, follow:

James (70), widower
Michael (28), son
Catherine (30), daughter-in-law
Michael (1), grandson
Thomas (3 months), grandson
Michael and Catherine had been married for three years and had two children born alive, both of whom were alive at the time of the census.

They had the following children.

  176 F i
Mary HELBERT was born about 1 Jun 1879. She was christened on 1 Jun 1879 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.
  177 M ii
Martin HELBERT was born on 1 Oct 1881.
  178 M iii
Michael HELBERT was born about 22 Apr 1882. He was christened on 22 Apr 1882 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died.

It is believed that Michael died in infancy.
  179 M iv
James HELBERT was born about 22 Apr 1882. He was christened on 22 Apr 1882 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.
  180 M v
Michael HELBERT was born about 5 Oct 1883. He was christened on 5 Oct 1883 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

It is likely that Michael married and had a family as I believe I may have located a 1911 census record for him. Please see the notes for his father, James, above for details.

However, Ellis Island records show the arrival in New York on 15 February 1908 of a Michael Helbert from Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. He was 22 and was joining a cousin, John Gordon, in Washington, D.C. The name of his nearest relative in Ireland is given as Edward Morris, an uncle, of Clerragh, Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. It is possible that this Michael is or Michael above, although our Michael's mother, as far as we know, did not have a brother named Edward. If the Michael Helbert who emigrated is indeed our Michael, then he may have returned to the farm in Clerragh a couple of years later (see notes on his father, James, above for more information). And if if was our Michael who emigrated, then it is possible that his cousin, John Gordon, who is mentioned on the Ellis Island record was his first cousin once removed who was the son of Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley.
  181 F vi
Bridget HELBERT was born about 8 Jun 1884. She was christened on 8 Jun 1884 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

42. Bridget GORDON (Michael , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 1849 in Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. She died about 1906 in probably Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. She was buried in Urlaur (or Orlar) Abbey, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo.

It is known that Bridget died at the age of 56. Her grave, in Urlaur Abbey, is unmarked.

Bridget married John IRWIN on 27 Apr 1869 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. John was born about 1840. He died in between 30 March 1901 and 2 April 1911 in probably Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo.

Eliza Flannery witnessed the marriage of John and Bridget.

They had the following children.

+ 182 M i Michael Francis IRWIN died on 24 Jun 1956.
  183 F ii
Anne IRWIN was born about 31 Mar 1871 in Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. She was christened on 2 Apr 1871 in Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. She died in probably U.S..

Anne emigrated to the United States.

Anne married 'unknown' KING. 'unknown' died in probably U.S..

Anne and her husband had no children.
  184 F iii
Mary IRWIN was born in Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. She died in probably U.S..

Mary emigrated to the United States.

Mary married 'unknown' GIBBS. 'unknown' died in probably U.S..

Mary and her husband had no children.
  185 M iv
Cornelius IRWIN was born in Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. He died.
  186 M v
John IRWIN was born about 7 Jul 1876 in Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. He was christened on 9 Jul 1876. He died in probably U.S..

John emigrated to the United States.
+ 187 F vi Arabella IRWIN was born about 1877.
  188 F vii
Catherine IRWIN was born on 1 Dec 1879 in Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo.
  189 M viii
Edward Patrick IRWIN was born on 1 Nov 1880 in Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo.

Edward, who never married, farmed in Leevalick.
+ 190 F ix Ellen IRWIN was born on 11 Mar 1882. She died on 28 Nov 1916.
+ 191 F x Bridget A. IRWIN was born on 26 Jul 1883. She died in 5 or 6 Oct 1948.
  192 M xi
Cormac Henry IRWIN was born on 17 Oct 1884 in Leveelick, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. He died in 1931 in Prescot, Lancashire.

Cormac travelled to the United States in 1906, presumably intending to settle there. The ship manifest indicates that he was planning to travel on to Cleveland, Ohio where his sister Mary was living. Cormac later settled in England.

44. Anne? GORDON (Caution: name, husband and children not verified) (Michael , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 1861 in probably Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. She died in possibly 12 Feb 1937 in possibly Cloonkeen, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.

It is pure speculation that this daughter of Michael and Anne was named Anne and that she married Dominick Bligh. From family notes it is known that Michael and Anne had three sons and four daughters. The names of the three sons and three of the daughters have been verified, but the name of the fourth daughter isn't certain. The reason it is thought that it might be Anne is because of correspondence (via leitrim-roscommmon.com) with Mick Pythian, a great-grandson of Dominick Bligh who was a farmer from Castlerea and who, in 1876, married an Anne Gordon from Aughalustia whose father's name was Michael.

Our Michael Gordon farmed in Aughalustia, and according to Cormac Gordon (son of Cormac Gordon and Mary Morahan), our Gordons were distantly related to a Bligh family from Castlerea who were "egglers" (they bought eggs from farmers' wives and sold them on), but he wasn't sure of the exact relationship. It is quite possible that these Blighs who were egglers were part of the Bligh family into which Mick Phythian's great-grandmother married. And it is possible, given the Aughalustia connection, and the fact that Mick's Anne Gordon had a father named Michael and was born about 1861 (this from the 1901 census), which fits in with the dates of birth of our Michael's children, that Anne might well be the "fourth" daughter of our Michael Gordon and Anne Finn.

Anne? married Dominick BLIGH, son of James BLIGH and Mary CONRY, on 17 Feb 1876 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. Dominick was born in 1833 in probably Castlerea, Co . Roscommon. He was christened on 8 Mar 1833 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon. He died on 29 Apr 1920 in Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.

They had the following children.

+ 193 M i James Joseph BLIGH was born on 13 Feb 1877. He died on 8 Feb 1948.
  194 F ii
Mary Anne BLIGH was born in 1878 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 27 Jan 1878 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon. She died on 29 Mar 1964.

Sponsors at Mary Anne's baptism were Michael Gordon and Margaret Bligh.
  195 F iii
Margaret BLIGH was born in 1879 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 11 Jan 1879 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon.

Margaret may have died as a child because another Margaret was born in 1886.
  196 F iv
Eleanora Teresa BLIGH was born in 1881 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 23 Oct 1881 in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Eleanora's baptism were Patrick Gordon and Eleanora Gordon.
  197 M v
Michael BLIGH was born in 1882 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. He died on 13 Feb 1949 in Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.
  198 F vi
Margaret (Maggie) BLIGH was born in 1886 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 18 Sep 1886 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon. She died on 12 Jul 1943 in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois.

Margaret entered the convent. She died in the Brigidine convent in Abbeyleix, Co. Laois.
  199 M vii
Patrick Joseph BLIGH was born in possibly 1887 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. He died on 28 Nov 1917 in France. He was buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road Cemetery, Manancourt, France.

Private Patrick Bligh, 14391, 3rd Ballalion Grenadier Guards, died in the Battle of the Somme of wounds sustained in the attack on Fontaine.
  200 F viii
Catherine (Kate) BLIGH was born in 1889 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 23 Feb 1889 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon. She died on 19 Feb 1961 in Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.
  201 M ix
John Joseph BLIGH was born in 1891 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 17 Oct 1891 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon.

John married Hilda HUTCHCROFT in St. Mary's Church, Dukinfield, Cheshire.
  202 F x
Martha BLIGH was born in 1905 in probably Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.

It is thought that Martha never married.

46. Honoria GORDON (Michael , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 3 Nov 1865 in probably Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 3 Nov 1865 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Honoria's baptism were John Gordon and Anna Gordon.

Honoria married T. DILLON (caution: not verified). T. DILLON (caution: not verified) died.

It is only speculation that Honoria married Mr. Dillon: it is known that one of Michael and Anne's daughters married a T. Dillon, but we do not know which one. It could have been Dora, Honoria's only other sister for whom we do not have a husband's name, or another sister of whose existence we are not aware.

They had the following children.

  203 M i
John DILLON (caution: not verified) died.
  204 M ii
Michael DILLON (caution: not verified) died.
  205 M iii
Harry DILLON (caution: not verified) died.

47. Ellen GORDON (Michael , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born in Nov 1867 in Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 24 Nov 1867 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died before 2 Apr 1911 in probably Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon.

Ellen and her husband were first cousins. They lived at Aughalustia Lodge in Aughalustia, Ballaghaderreen.

According to Ellen's birth certificate, she was born on 20 January 1868. Because christenings unsually took place a day or two after birth and were registered at the time, and because births were often registered a couple of months after the event, the date on a baptismal record is often a more accurate reflection of the date of birth than the date on a birth certificate. For this reason it is being assumed that Ellen was born in November 1867 rather than January 1868.

Ellen married Cormac GORDON, son of Patrick (Pat) GORDON and Mary FRENCH, on 11 Dec 1884 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. Cormac was born about 1848 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died on 14 Aug 1924 in Aughalustia Lodge, , Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He was buried on 16 Aug 1924 in Kilcoleman Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Cormac's wife, Ellen, was his first cousin (a daughter of of his uncle Michael). Cormac and Ellen lived in Aughalustia and according to family notes, they had four sons and one daughter. There is a 1901 census return for a "Cormack" Gordon in Aghalustia with a wife, Ellen, FIVE sons and a daughter listed. It is probable that this return relates to our Cormac Gordon and his first cousin Ellen and their family. It is from this census return that we have the names and approximate years of birth of Cormac's and Ellen's children, and the approximate year of birth of Cormac.

They had the following children.

  206 M i Patrick GORDON is printed as #101.
+ 207 M ii Michael GORDON is printed as #102.
208 M iii John Joseph (Joe) GORDON is printed as #103.
209 M iv Cormac GORDON is printed as #104.
+ 210 M v Thomas (Tom) Francis GORDON is printed as #105.
+ 211 F vi Dorothy (Dora) Mary GORDON is printed as #106.

48. Catherine (Kathleen) J. GORDON (Thomas , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born on 15 Apr 1858 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 18 Apr 1858 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. She died on 20 Feb 1927 in Dublin. She was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Catherine married William CLARKE, son of Thomas CLARKE, on 22 Aug 1883 in Fairymount Church. William was born about 1851 in Co. Roscommon. He died on 25 Jul 1928 in 97 Lower Leeson St., Dublin. He was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

William was a farmer and a justice of the peace. He also owned and operated a corn mill in Castlemore, Co. Mayo (near Ballaghaderreen). He and Kathleen lived in Castlemore House in Castlemore for many years before moving (sometime after the 1911 census, possibly as late as the 1920s) to Dublin where they lived at 6 Elgin Road in Ballsbridge.

According to the 1911 census, William and Kathleen had been married for 27 years and had nine children born alive, eight of whom were alive at the time of the census (Gordon having died in 1897).

The address where William died, 97 Lower Leeson St. in Dublin, appears to have been a nursing home at the time. His home address was still 6 Elgin Road. William died of "appendicitis with peritonitis", just 17 months after the death of his wife, Kathleen.

They had the following children.

  212 M i
Thomas Gordon (Gordon) CLARKE was born on 2 Jun 1884 in Castlemore, Co. Mayo. He was christened on 28 Dec 1884 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He died on 12 Jun 1897 in Co. Sligo or Co. Mayo.

I have been told that Gordon died in a drowning accident while at boarding school in Co. Sligo. However, his death certificate says Gordon died of a cerebral haemorrhage in Castlemore, Co. Mayo. He had just turned 13.
+ 213 M ii John Joseph CLARKE was born on 31 Jul 1885. He died in 1975.
+ 214 M iii Herbert Eustace (Bertie) CLARKE was born on 24 Apr 1887. He died on 28 Jun 1945.
  215 F iv
Anne Clare CLARKE was born about 9 Dec 1888 in Castlemore, Co. Mayo. She was christened on 9 Dec 1888 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died on 12 Mar 1926 in Castlemore, Co. Mayo.

Anne, who never married, died at the age of 37 from pneumonia.
  216 F v
Gertrude (Gertie) M. CLARKE was born on 16 Nov 1890 in Castlemore, Co. Mayo. She was christened on 23 Nov 1890 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died about 1960 in London.

Gertie was a nurse. Prior to her marriage she worked in St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin. She and her husband, Joe, a doctor, later settled in London where Gertie worked in Joe's practice.

Gertrude married Joseph (Joe) P. DOYLE, son of Arthur Joseph DOYLE and Mary Jane 'UNKNOWN'. Joseph was born on 21 Oct 1890 in probably New Ross, Co. Wexford. He died after 1960 in London.

Joe and his wife, Gertie, got to know each other in St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin where Joe's father was a patient and Gertie was a nurse. Gertie's aunt Sr. Jerome Gordon, who also worked in the hospital, apparently engineered their union: she instructed Gertie to look after Joe's father after Gertie's first cousin Kathleen O'Hara, a previous carer of Joe's father, had married Joe's brother Arthur (a result, it is believed, of another match-making effort by Sr. Jerome).

Joe was a doctor. He and Gertie, who had no children, moved to London where it is known they were living at 40 Melbourne Avenue, Ealing in 1939.
  217 F vi
Mary (May) Christina CLARKE was born on 17 Apr 1892 in Castlemore, Co. Mayo. She was christened on 7 May 1892 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1981 in Brighton, England.

May was a doctor and lived in England. She never married.
  218 F vii
Kathleen CLARKE was born on 23 Jun 1895 in Castlemore, Co. Mayo. She died in 1987 in England.

Kathleen was a nurse and lived in the south of England. From the 1939 Register we know she was working at the time as a nurse in the household of retired colonel George May of Rockingham, Andover Road, Winchester, Hampshire.
+ 219 F viii Margaret Mary (Rita) CLARKE was born on 13 Jun 1897. She died in 1972.
  220 F ix
Edith (Edie, Nuala) CLARKE was born on 14 Jan 1899 in Castlemore, Co. Mayo. She was christened on 20 Jan 1899 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died in possibly 1989 in Hampshire, England.

Edie was also called Nuala, and in fact insisted on being called Nuala in her latter years. She lived in England and never married.

49. Bridget (Bea) GORDON (Thomas , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born on 7 Jun 1859 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 11 Jun 1859 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. She died on 5 Sep 1949 in Clegna, Cootehall, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She was buried on 7 Sep 1949 in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin (grave OH 71.5, St. Bridget's).

There is a record in the LDS Vital Records Index for the christening in Loughglynn of a Bridget Gordon, daughter of Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley. The date of the christening ties in with the date of birth provided by the family (June 1859) and not with the information on Bea in the 1901 census which indicates that she was born about 1865.

Bea and her husband, Laurence, lived in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Bea died at the age of 90, outliving her husband, Laurence, by 21 years.

Bridget married Laurence O'HARA, son of Laurence O'HARA and Eleanor (Ellen) MEEHAN, on 18 Jul 1886 in Fairymount Church. Laurence was born about 24 Sep 1860 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 26 Sep 1860. He died on 12 Jan 1928 in Dublin. He was buried on 14 Jan 1928 in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin (grave OH 71.5 St. Bridget's).

The O'Hara family is twice connected to another family being researched, i.e., the Gordon family of Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. Laurence married Bridget Gordon; and Mary Morahan, a niece of Laurence's, married Bridget's younger brother, Cormac.

It is believed that Laurence spent a number of years in Colorado as a young man.

Laurence died of heart failure at St. Vincent's Hospital in Dublin.

They had the following children.

  221 M i
John Gordon O'HARA was born about 1 Nov 1887 in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 1 Nov 1887 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died on 2 Jul 1908 in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

John died in a drowning accident at the age of 20. His body was found in a river in Clegna on 2 July 1908.
+ 222 F ii Evelyn Mary O'HARA was born about 13 Jul 1889. She died in 1954.
  223 F iii
Florence Mary (Sr. Margaret) O'HARA was born about 14 Mar 1891 in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 14 Mar 1891 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1968.

A Florrie O'Hara, aged 18, who was born in Co. Roscommon is listed as a pupil at the School of Rural and Domestic Economy in Clifden, Co. Galway in the 1911 census. This may be Florence.

Florence entered the convent, becoming Sr. Margaret.
  224 M iv
Joseph O'HARA was born about 21 May 1892 in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 21 May 1892 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died in probably before 30 Mar 1901.

Joseph's name isn't among the names of Bea's and Laurence's children as provided by the family, nor is he listed in the 1901 census. However, a baptismal record for a Joseph O'Hara, born to Laurence O'Hara and Bridget Gordon, was located by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company. It is possible that Joseph died as a child. A sister named Josephine was born a year and a half later - perhaps she was named in memory of Joseph.
  225 F v
Josephine (Sr. Austin Camillus) O'HARA was born about 19 Nov 1893 in Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 19 Nov 1893 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1983.

A Josephine O'Hara, aged 16, who was born in Co. Roscommon is listed as a pupil boarding at the Presentation Convent School, Tuam, Co. Galway in the 1911 census. This may be our Josephine.

50. Michael John GORDON (Thomas , Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born in May 1861 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 19 May 1861 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died on 26 Jun 1938 in probably Paeroa, New Zealand. He was buried on 27 Jun 1938 in Pukerimu Cemetery, Paeroa, New Zealand.

Michael's relationship with his father, Thomas, was said to have been tempestuous, and it led eventually to Michael's emigration to New Zealand. The story goes that, against his father's wishes, Michael bought a horse that was a highly regarded jumper. This was presumably with his father's money. His father flew into a rage and ordered Michael to return the house to its former owner. Michael's response was to charge towards a terrified Thomas on the horse and jump over his head. Following this incident Michael decided it was time to leave Kilgarriff. On his next excursion to market, with a horse and cart loaded with produce, he not only sold the produce but also the horse and cart. With the proceeds he made his way to Dublin where he bought a boat ticket to New Zealand. He never returned to Ireland.

Michael was a keen and very skilled horseman and he continued to work with horses when he went to New Zealand. He worked initially as an ostler and stable hand in Auckland and much later owned a magnificent set of drays which he used in his haulage business in Paeroa. He also maintained his interest in horse-racing for the rest of his life.

Michael and his wife, Sarah, remained in Auckland for a couple of years after their marriage but then work became scarce owing to an economic recession and Michael and Sarah moved to Melbourne, Australia with their son Alfred. Their second child, Albert (Joe) was born in Melbourne. After five years in Melbourne the family returned to New Zealand. The economy was improving and Michael was able to set up his haulage business. He and Sarah and their family settled in Paeroa.

Michael is buried alongside Sarah, in Section ROC (Roman Catholic?), Plot 563 in Pukerimu Cemetery, Paeroa.

It is said that, throughout his life, Michael maintained was of the opinion that, as the eldest son, he had a legitimate right to the family farm back in Ireland. This is probably why his son Joe, while on leave in Ireland during service in World War I, apparently suggested to his (hospitable) cousins that the farm was by rights his father's. Joe's relatives politely changed the subject, poured him more whiskey, and Joe got nowhwere.

Note: There is a record in the LDS Vital Records Index for the christening in Loughglynn of a Michael Gordon, son of Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley. The date of the christening (19 May 1861) ties in roughly with the date of birth provided by the family (Sep 1860).

Michael married Sarah Bridget MURPHY, daughter of James MURPHY and Johanna CRONIN, on 3 Feb 1889 in St. Benedict's Church, Newton, Auckland. Sarah was born in 1866 in Arch Hill, Auckland. She died on 10 Nov 1914 in probably Paeroa, New Zealand. She was buried on 12 Nov 1914 in Pukerimu Cemetery, Paeroa, New Zealand.

Sarah was only 48 years of age when she died. She is buried in Section ROC, Plot 563 of Pukerimu Cemetery in Paeroa.
