Descendants of John GORDON (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Third Generation

4. Patrick (Pat) GORDON (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 1807 in probably Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died on 9 Jun 1882 in Currentorpane, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

Pat owned 761 acress of farmland in Currentorpane. According to the Irish Calendar of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1920, he left an estate worth £1,221 12s 8d. The beneficiary is not mentioned.

The year of Pat's birth provided by the family (1817) doesn't fit in with the date of baptism of his sister, Bridget (12 July 1817), as provided by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company. It also doesn't fit in with the births of his children as it is unlikely that he was in his late teens when he had his first children. It is more likely therefore that he was born perhaps five to 10 years earlier.

Patrick married Mary FRENCH on 4 Feb 1833 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. Mary was born about 1805 in Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. She died on 4 Jan 1900 in Currentorpane, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

According to family sources, Mary was born in 1805, but this seems unlikely given that that she was still having children in the late 1850s when she would have been in her fifties. Furthermore, according to her death certificate she died at the age of 90, giving an approximate birth year of 1909, meaning she would have had her youngest child at the age of abot 50, which seems unlikely. It is probable therefore that Mary was born perhaps around 1815, but this does not tie in with family information that Mary was older than her husband.

Family notes state that Patrick and Mary were married in 1844, which appears to be incorrect given they had had several children prior to this date. The Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company have records showing that a Patrick Gordon and a Mary French were married in Fairymount on 4 February 1833, which is more likely.

Witnesses to the marriage of Mary and Patrick were Martin Gordon (Patrick's brother?) and Michael Dowd.

They had the following children.

  12 M i
Robert GORDON was born about 1 Jan 1834 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 1 Jan 1834 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died in probably Australia.

Robert emigrated to Australia. According to a number of family trees on the Ancestry website our Robert died on 11 December 1869 in Champion Bay, Geraldton, Western Australia but I have been unable to verify this. Another Robert Gordon, with a middle name of Cormac, died in New Zealand in 1893. The Cormac/Gordon combination is unusual and appears to be unique to our Gordon family. Could this be our Robert?
  13 M ii
James GORDON was born about 28 Jul 1835 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 28 Jul 1835 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died in possibly before 1855.

Because another James was born to Patrick and Mary around 1855, it is being presumed that this James died before then.
  14 F iii
Anne GORDON was born about 23 Nov 1836 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 23 Nov 1836 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. She died in possibly before 1850.

A second Anne was born to Patrick and Mary in 1850 so it seems likely that this Anne died before then.
+ 15 M iv John GORDON was born about 15 Jun 1838. He died on 30 Sep 1895.
  16 M v
Thomas GORDON was born about 17 Oct 1839 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 17 Oct 1839 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died in possibly before 1853.

A second Thomas was born to Patrick and Mary in 1853 so it seems likely that this Thomas died before then.
+ 17 F vi Elizabeth (Eliza) GORDON was born about 1841. She died after 2 Apr 1911.
+ 18 M vii Patrick GORDON was born about 1842. He died on 21 Mar 1905.
+ 19 M viii Cormac GORDON was born about 1848. He died on 14 Aug 1924.
+ 20 F ix Mary Josephine GORDON was born in 1849. She died in 1878.
+ 21 F x Anne GORDON was born about 3 Jul 1850. She died after 18 Feb 1939.
  22 M xi
Thomas GORDON was born about 14 Aug 1853 in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 14 Aug 1853 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died in 1905 in Ballinafad, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

Thomas was parish priest of Ballinafad, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
+ 23 M xii James G. GORDON was born about 1855. He died about 1939.
+ 24 F xiii Ellen Mary GORDON was born about 10 Apr 1857. She died on 17 Mar 1895.
+ 25 M xiv Francis (Frank) GORDON was born about 31 Jul 1859. He died on 9 Oct 1890.

5. Martin GORDON (Caution: wife and some children not verified) (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born in probably Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died in probably Clerragh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

The only information the family has for Martin is that he lived in Clerragh in Fairymount and that he was married (wife's name unknown) and had two sons (Barney and Martin) and one daughter named Maria.

The Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company came up with more information for a Martin Gordon which would seem to tie in with our Martin Gordon for the following reasons:

1. Although the genealogy company's Martin had four sons, two were named Bernard (Barney?) and Martin.

2. The genealogy company's Martin had one daughter (named Mary) as did ours (Maria, a variant of Mary).

3. There is the Clerragh connection: our Martin farmed in Clerragh and according to information from the 1901 census returns and from the genealogy company, Martin, son of their Martin, farmed in Clerragh.

For the above reasons the family of Martin Gordon and Bridget Finn, as detailed by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company, is being included in the family tree. But further checking would need to be carried out.

Martin married Bridget FINN (not verified) on 10 Feb 1836 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. Bridget died on 21 Dec 1900.

They had the following children.

+ 26 M i Michael GORDON was born about 5 Jul 1838.
  27 F ii
Mary GORDON was born about 24 Jul 1840. She was christened on 24 Jul 1840 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were Robert Walsh and Anne Hunt.

A marriage record was located in the IGI (International Genealogical Index) for a Mary Gordon, daughter of Martin Gordon, who married Denis Donlon in Loughglynn on 24 January 1864. Could this relate to our Mary above? If so, we know from a family tree on the Ancestry website that Mary and Denis had nine children: John (emigrated to Australia), Patrick, Martin, Bridget (Australia), Michael (Australia), Thomas, James (Australia), Rachel (Australia) and Mary.
+ 28 M iii Charles GORDON was born about 1844. He died on 29 Jan 1893.
+ 29 M iv Martin GORDON was born about 1849. He died on 24 Dec 1914.
+ 30 M v Bernard (Barney) GORDON was born about 1850. He died on 1 Mar 1910.

7. Bridget GORDON (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 12 Jul 1817 in probably Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

There is a baptism record for a Bridget Gordon with the following details:
Date of baptism: 12 Jul 1817
Place of baptism: Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon
   Father: Cormac Gordon
   Mother: Anne Hunt
But the date of baptism differs from the year of birth provided by the family, which is "about 1830".
Sponsors at the 1817 baptism were Martin Gordon and Elizabeth Hunt.

Bridget married Timothy (Tim) MORRIS. Timothy was born in possibly Clerragh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died in probably before 1902.

The children born to Bridget and Tim, as listed by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company, shows a gap of about 12 years where there were no children born to the couple. This would need to be checked out.

They had the following children.

+ 31 M i Michael MORRIS was born about 4 Nov 1836.
  32 F ii
Bridget MORRIS was born about 30 Jan 1838. She was christened on 30 Jan 1838 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.
+ 33 M iii Timothy (Thady) MORRIS was born about 1850.
+ 34 F iv Ellen MORRIS was born about 30 Mar 1851.
  35 M v
John MORRIS was born about 29 Mar 1853. He was christened on 29 Mar 1853 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.
  36 F vi
Mary MORRIS was born about 29 Mar 1853. She was christened on 29 Mar 1853 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.
  37 M vii
Thomas MORRIS was born about 16 Sep 1855. He was christened on 16 Sep 1855 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.
+ 38 F viii Margaret MORRIS was born about 23 Sep 1858.
  39 M ix
Francis MORRIS was born about 15 Jun 1861. He was christened on 15 Jun 1861 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

8. Michael GORDON (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born in 1818 in probably Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died on 13 Jan 1886 in Lung, Co. Mayo (now Co. Roscommon).

According to information from the family, Michael married a "Miss Finn" from Fairymount and they ran a farm in Aughalustia, Ballaghaderreen; they had three sons and four daughters, including Pat, Tom, Michael and Dora.

Based on this information, the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company came up with the following:

Miss Finn's first name was Anne, and records were found for four children born to Michael Gordon and Anne Finn - Thomas, Michael, Honoria and Ellen, which ties in with the family information.

Unfortunately the fourth daughter's name is not known. An Anne Gordon from Aughalustia, daughter of a Michael Gordon, married a Dominick Bligh from Castlerea in 1876 in Ballaghaderreen. According to Cormac Gordon, son of Cormac Gordon and Mary Morahan, the Blighs were somehow connected to the Gordons, so it is possible that Anne may have been a daughter of Michael Gordon and Anne Finn.

Update (12 January 2005): I have just received evidence of the existence of another daughter, Bridget, and I have added her name and details to the list below.

Notes:

1. On the birth or baptism record found by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company for Ellen Gordon, daughter of Michael and Anne, Ellen's mother's name was transcribed as Anne "Ferin" which, given the style of writing at the time, the head genealogist from the above company believes that it was actually "Finn".

2. There is a 1901 census record for England that gives details of a Patrick Gordon, a 22-year-old farm labourer who was born in Aughalustia. It is possible that he is connected to the family of Michael above but I haven't been able to establish an exact relationship. The Patrick Gordon from the census was living in what looks like the village or hamlet of Woodham in the parish of Yoxall in Staffordshire.

3. A baptismal record has been located for a Cormac Gordon, son of Michael and Mary Gordon (Mary's maiden name is not given) who was baptised on 20 July 1852 in Ballaghaderreen. The sponsor was Michael Finn. Given the father's and  sponsor's names, there may be a connection between Cormac and our Michael above.

Michael married Anne FINN. Anne was born in Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died in probably Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon.

They had the following children.

  40 M i
Thomas (Tom) GORDON was born about 31 Jul 1839 in probably Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 31 Jul 1839 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

The year of baptism as transcribed by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Society (1839) doesn't fit in with the dates of baptism as transcribed for some other members of the family (1860-1867). The actual baptismal certificate would need to be checked.

There is a 1901 census record for the household of a Thomas Gordon of Aughalustia, which MAY relate to our Thomas above. Details of the return are as follows:

Thomas (aged 55)
Bridget (wife, aged 53)
Maggie (daughter, 19)
Bridget (daughter, 15)
Martin (son, 12)

And from the Irish Genealogy website, www.irishgenealogy.ie, we know that Thomas's wife's surname was Henry, their daughter Bridget was born in Aughalustia on 5 February 1856 and they had another daughter named Ellen who was born in Aughalustia on 29 August 1884.
  41 M ii
Patrick (Pat) GORDON was born in probably Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. He died.

There is a 1901 census record for the household of a Patrick Gordon of Aughalustia, which MAY relate to our Patrick above. Details of the return are as follows:

Patrick (aged 49)
Bridget (38), wife
Annie (6), daughter

And there is a 1911 census return for the family of possibly the same Patrick Gordon of Aughalustia, details of which follow:

Patrick (61)
Kate (50), wife [although the name of the wife of Patrick Gordon in the 1901 census was Bridget], born Co. Sligo
Annie (16), daughter
Eveleen (9), daughter
Frances (6), daughter
Patrick and Kate had been married for 17 years and had 5 children born alive, three of whom were still alive at the time of the 1911 census.

It appears that Annie above, daughter of Patrick and Kate, married a John Meighan and lived in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon as a death notice was located in the Irish Independent archives for an Annie Kathleen Meighan, daughter of Pat and Kate Gordon of Aughalustia, who died on 21 April 1928 at the District Hospital in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Burial was in Kilcolman Cemetery, Ballaghaderreeen. There is no mention of children in the death notice which would indicate that Annie and John had no children.

Kate may have died on 6 February 1942 as a death notice was located in the Irish Press archives for a Catherine Gordon, widow of the late Patrick Gordon, who died on that date at her home in Aughalustia. She was buried in Kilcolman Cemetery.
+ 42 F iii Bridget GORDON was born about 1849. She died about 1906.
  43 M iv
Michael GORDON was born about 23 Dec 1860 in probably Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 23 Dec 1860 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Michael's baptism were Patrick Gordon and Bridget Gordon.
+ 44 F v Anne? GORDON (Caution: name, husband and children not verified) was born about 1861. She died in possibly 12 Feb 1937.
  45 F vi
Dorothy (Dora) GORDON was born in probably Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. She died.
+ 46 F vii Honoria GORDON was born about 3 Nov 1865.
+ 47 F viii Ellen GORDON was born in Nov 1867. She died before 2 Apr 1911.

9. Thomas GORDON (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born in 1821 in probably Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 15 Nov 1821 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon. He died on 23 Mar 1901 in probably Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Thomas's baptism were Patrick Gordon and Mary Hunt.

According to the marriage notice in The Auckland Star newspaper of his eldest son, Michael, Thomas's address (in early 1889) is given as Roughwood Lodge, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. Perhaps Roughwood Lodge was the house inherited by Thomas and his wife, Anne (née Foley), from Anne's father.

Thomas left his estate, worth £456 5s to his son-in-law, William Clarke (husband of Thomas's daughter Kathleen).

Thomas married Anne FOLEY, daughter of Michael? FOLEY and 'UNKNOWN', about 1857. Anne was born in 1839 in Breanamore, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. She died on 26 Feb 1885 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon.

It is believed that Anne's father was a pig exporter.

It is also thought that Anne was an only daughter. She was possibly an only child because her father left the family farm to Anne and her husband, Thomas. However, as a result of a government act of the time (details unknown), the farm was distributed amongst others.

Anne died of heart disease at the age of about 45. Her death certificate tells us that cause of death was 'morbus cordis' that had lasted eight weeks. The youngest of her 13 surviving children was only four years old.

They had the following children.

+ 48 F i Catherine (Kathleen) J. GORDON was born on 15 Apr 1858. She died on 20 Feb 1927.
+ 49 F ii Bridget (Bea) GORDON was born on 7 Jun 1859. She died on 5 Sep 1949.
+ 50 M iii Michael John GORDON was born in May 1861. He died on 26 Jun 1938.
  51 F iv
Mary GORDON was born on 9 Jul 1862 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died on 8 Jun 1924 in London.

Mary was a sister in the order of la Sainte-Union des Sacrés-Cœurs, working initially at Our Lady's Bower in Athlone, Co. Westmeath and later at the order's convent on Highgate Road in Camden, London, where she died. Mary's name in religion was Sr. M. Regis.
  52 F v
Anne (Annie) GORDON was born on 5 Feb 1865 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 9 Feb 1865 in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon.

Annie entered the convent but it is not known what order she joined. She worked in Sligo initially and later served in convents in Central America. Unfortunately we have no further information on Annie.
  53 M vi
Patrick (Pat) GORDON was born on 25 Nov 1866 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died about 1899 in Liverpool.

According to one family source, Pat went to Australia in 1895. According to another, he worked for the railroad in the Liverpool area and died around 1899 when only in his thirties. Perhaps he did both. I was also told that Patrick never married.
+ 54 F vii Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ellen GORDON was born about 23 Jul 1868. She died on 3 Dec 1955.
+ 55 M viii Cormac GORDON was born on 26 Feb 1870. He died on 13 Sep 1939.
  56 F ix
Jane (Jennie) GORDON was born on 17 Jun 1871 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died on 1 Dec 1964 in Dublin. She was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Jennie, who never married, was a domestic science teacher and taught in Sligo for a number of years. She retired to Dublin where she lived at 24 Trees Road in Mount Merrion.
  57 F x
Theresa (Tillie) GORDON was born on 10 Dec 1873 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 17 Dec 1875 in possibly Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died on 12 Feb 1965. She was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Tillie was a nurse. She worked in Panama where she travelled by mule and delivered babies. She also nursed in Guatemala and later worked in New York. There is a record of Tillie arriving in New Orleans from Cristóbal, Panama in December 1917. The ship manifest tells us that Tilly's last residence was Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Another travel record located for Tillie relates to her arrival by ship in New York from Ireland on 20 October 1929. She would have been 55 years of age at this time. Surprisingly, on the ship manifest her occupation is "Domestic" rather than nurse.

Tillie, who never married, returned to live in Ireland after her retirement.

Apparently Tillie and her sister Jennie, who had been close, had a falling out and their relationship was poor thereafter. According to a family source both were "strong-willed" women.

Martha GORDON was born in 1875 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1877.

According to records as transcribed by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company, a Martina Gordon (born to Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley) was baptised on 18 February 1877 in Fairymount; a Thomas Gordon (also born to Thomas Gordon and Anne Foley), born 12 February 1877, was baptised on 7 (sic) February 1877 in Fairymount. Was there a transcription error? Or were Martina/Martha and Thomas twins? Or is the information provided by the family correct, i.e., Martha was born in 1875 and Thomas was born in 1877?
+ 59 M xii Thomas (Tom) Francis GORDON was born on 19 Jan 1877. He died on 4 Jan 1948.
+ 60 M xiii John GORDON was born about 10 Jul 1879. He died in 1948.
  61 F xiv
Emma (Sr. Jerome) GORDON was born on 9 Aug 1880 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died on 19 Jan 1968 in Dublin. She was buried in Sisters of Charity convent cemetery, Donnybrook, Dublin.

Emma, who may also have been known as Emily, entered the convent, becoming Sr. Jerome. A member of the Sisters of Charity order, she worked in Dublin at Linden Convalescant Home and St. Vincent's Hospital.

According to records as transcribed by the Co. Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Company, Sr. Jerome was born on 1 November 1881, and according to her headstone she was born in 1882.
  62 M xv
James Joseph GORDON was born on 5 Feb 1883 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 8 Apr 1883 in possibly Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died on 8 Aug 1883.

It is believed that James of whooping cough.
  63 M xvi
William Martin GORDON was born on 5 Feb 1883 in Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 8 Apr 1883 in possibly Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died on 1 Aug 1883.

It is believed that William of whooping cough.

11. Catherine GORDON (Caution: some children not verified) (Cormac or Thomas , John ) was born about 1825 in probably Kilgarriff, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died on 6 Feb 1907 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

I have been unable to prove that some of the children listed below were actually those of Catherine and her husband, John, hence the cautions. All we know for sure is that they had four sons and six daughters. If anyone has any further information their family, I would be very grateful if you would contact Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com.

Catherine married John FLANNERY. John died before 20 Mar 1902 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

John ran John Flannery & Co., a large drapery and hardware store in Ballaghadereen. The business may also have included a pub at some stage. The premises was burned down by an incendiary bomb in 1920, during the War of Independence, but were rebuilt and business contined. The shop is now the B. Mulligan & Co. department store

I have come across a record of a headstone inscription in Ballaghaderreen Old Graveyard that reads:

In memory of
Mary Flannery
(alias Gordon)
the beloved wife of
Thomas Flannery
of Ballaghaderin [sic]
She departed this life 14th May 1860
aged 49 years
She was a fond wife
and a most affectionate mother
Have mercy on her soul O Lord
erected by her sorrowing husband

Thomas and Mary may have been been connected to our John and Catherine.

They had the following children.

Thomas FLANNERY (caution: not verified) was born about 1860 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

It is pure speculation that Thomas was one of the four sons of Catherine and John. According to the 1901 census, Thomas lived in the town of Ballaghaderreen and was a publican. For this reason, it is being assumed that he was a member of the Flannery family that owned the large shop and pub in Ballaghaderreen.
+ 72 M ix Bernard FLANNERY (caution: not verified) was born about 1862.
  73 M x
James FLANNERY (caution: not verified) was born about 1862 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

It is pure speculation that James was one of Catherine and John's four sons. According to the 1901 census, James lived in the town of Ballaghaderreen and was a publican. Because of this it is being assumed that he was a member of the Flannery family that owned the big shop and pub in Ballaghaderreen. His age is given as 38, the same age as Bernard; were they twins?
