72. Ellen "Nell Broder" HUDSON (William HUDSON , Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born on 2 Jun 1898 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 15 Aug 1976 in Tralee, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Nell Broder married Patrick BRODERICK "Paddy Broder", son of Thomas BRODERICK and Hanora SHEEHY, on 1 Feb 1923 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. Paddy Broder was born on 21 Jun 1896 in possibly Coilagurteen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 24 Jun 1896 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died on 28 Jan 1993 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Paddy's baptismal sponsors were Michael Sheehy and Hanora Broder. Paddy had a twin brother named John.

Paddy lived with his wife, Ellen, in Coilagurteen on a farm given to them in the 1920s by Ellen's eldest sister, Mary Ann, and her husband, John Doody, who had no children. Mary Ann and John lived with Paddy and Ellen for the rest of their lives. By the 1970s Paddy and Ellen were living on Church Road, Moyvane.

Paddy was a member of the old IRA. He died at the age of 96.

74. Mary Ann MCENERY (Mary HUDSON , Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born on 28 Feb 1871 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 2 Mar 1871 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in 1961 in Victoria, Australia.

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were Patrick O'Connor and Bridget Hudson.

Mary emigrated to Australia and settled in Victoria. We do not know when exactly she left Ireland but, given that she was the informant named on the death certificate of her sister Hanora who died in Tubbertureen in February 1890 and she married in Victoria in 1902, we can say that she emgrated between those dates. Her decision to go to Australia may have been influenced by the fact that she had an Brigid Hudson (Collins) who had had been living in Victoria since about 1870. It also appears that Mary's elder brother, Thomas, emigrated to Australia but we have no information as to when.

Mary met her husband, Richard, in Australia and they had two children - that we know of. Sadly, both children died in infancy, and Richard died just seven years into their marriage, aged only about 28. Mary did not remarry and lived to be about 89 years of age.

Mary married Richard Thomas FRIEND, son of Francis (Frank) FRIEND and Bridget WHELAN, in 1902 in Victoria, Australia. Richard was born in 1881 in Victoria, Australia. He died in 1909 in Victoria, Australia.

Richard's father was from England (London) and his mother came from Ireland.

They had the following children.

  266 F i
Mary Lydia FRIEND was born in 1904 in Victoria, Australia. She died in 1905 in Victoria, Australia.
  267 M ii
Richard Thomas FRIEND was born in 1906 in Victoria, Australia. He died in 1906 in Victoria, Australia.

75. John MCENERY (Mary HUDSON , Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born on 24 Oct 1872 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 25 Oct 1872 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 16 Mar 1939 in Queens, New York City.

Sponsors at John's baptism were Richard Hudson and Catherine Enright.

The 1900 census tells us that John emigrated to the United States in 1891 and was working as a railroad conductor in New York. He and his family were living at the time in Manhattan and by 1910 they had moved to the Bronx.

John married Maria CREGAN about 1898 in U.S.. Maria was born in May 1865 in Co. Limerick.

According to the 1900 United States census, Maria emigrated to the U.S. in 1892. The 1910 census tells us that she was working as a seamstress at the time. We also learn that she and her husband, John, had had six children, three of whom (listed below) were alive at the time of the census.

They had the following children.

  268 F i
Mary (Mae) MCENERY was born in Oct 1899 in New York City. She died in 1966.

Mary married James FELTON. James died.
  269 F ii
Josephine MCENERY was born about 1900 in New York City. She died in 1954.

Josephine married Thomas CALHOUN. Thomas died.
+ 270 M iii Thomas John MCENERY was born in 1902. He died in 1988.

77. Edmund (Ned) MCENERY (Mary HUDSON , Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born on 27 Apr 1876 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 29 Apr 1876 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 25 Dec 1940 in probably Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ned's baptismal sponsors were Edmond Hudson and Johanna Hudson.

Ned was living with his brother Denis at the time of the 1911 census. It appears that Denis's farm had originally been owned by Ned but around 1910 Ned gave or sold it to Denis. Ned married in July 1911 and in 1913 acquired his own property in Tubbertureen, comprising a cottage with one acre of land. Small holdings such as this were created by Listowel Rural District Council in the early years of the 20th century in an attempt to help those with limited means to be self sufficient. In 1930 Ned's name on official valuation records was replaced by "Miss McEnery". Despite the word "Miss" it seems that this was Ned's wife, Margaret as the name on the valuation records was changed to "Margaret McEnery" a year later.

Edmund married Margaret JAMIESON, daughter of Robert JAMIESON, on 30 Jul 1911 in Church of the Immaculate Conception, Glin, Co. Limerick. Margaret was born about 1878. She died in possibly 18 Jul 1945 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Margaret, whose surname is occasionally given as Jameson, was working as a servant in the Costello houshold in Tooraree Lower, Kilfergus, Co. Limerick at the time of the 1901 census, while her family were in Tarmons East, Tarbert, Co. Kerry. Ten years later the family, inclding Margaret, was living in Ballyculhane Lower, Glin, Co. Limerick.

Margaret and her husband, Edmund, may have had more children than those listed below.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were David Ruddle and Bridget O'Reilly.

Edmund and Margaret had the following children.

  271 F i
Mary MCENERY was born on 5 May 1912 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.
  272 M ii
Michael (Mikey) MCENERY was born on 15 Aug 1913 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died.

Mikey's baptismal sponsors were Robert Jameson and Mary Jameson. I have been told that Mikey may have emigrated to England. However, it seems he was not living there in 1939 as he does not appear to be listed in the 1939 Register (a type of census taken in the U.K. on 29 September 1939).

Michael married Margaret (Peg) ENRIGHT, daughter of John ENRIGHT, on 15 Jun 1937 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Margaret died.

Peg was from Gortaglanna, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Hannah's baptism were Thomas Lyons and Ann Cusack.

Hannah emigrated to the United States in 1901 and settled in New York where she met her husband, James O'Connor. She later moved to New Jersey.

Johanna married James O'CONNOR, son of James O'CONNOR and Margaret HARTNETT, on 15 Apr 1906 in Manhattan, New York City. James was born in 12 May 1875 or 1879 in Co. Limerick. He died in U.S..

They had the following children.

  276 M i
James O'CONNOR was born in 1907 in New York. He died.

James and his mother are listed as visitors in the 1911 census return for the household of his grandmother Mary McEnery in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Presumably they had returned to Ireland to visit family.

James and his wife, Marion, lived in New Milford, New Jersey.

James married Marion BROWN. Marion died.
  277 M ii
Thomas O'CONNOR was born in New York. He died in New York.

Thomas died as an infant.
+ 278 M iii Jeremiah Jerome O'CONNOR was born on 6 Oct 1913. He died in 1986.

80. Bridget MCENERY (Mary HUDSON , Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born on 25 Feb 1881 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 28 Feb 1881 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 16 Oct 1932 in Knocknagorna, Athea, Co. Limerick.

Bridget married John (Jack) O'SULLIVAN, son of Patrick O'SULLIVAN and Mary MULLANE, on 17 Feb 1912 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John was born on 28 Feb 1874 in Knocknagorna, Athea, Co. Limerick. He died after 16 Oct 1932 in Knocknagorna, Athea, Co. Limerick.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were Patrick Dalton from Knocknagorna, Athea, Co. Limerick and Hanora McEnery from Tubbertureen.

Bridget and John had the following children.

+ 279 M i Patrick O'SULLIVAN was born on 29 Mar 1914. He died on 31 May 1961.
+ 280 F ii Mary Bridget O'SULLIVAN was born about 1916. She died in 1988.
+ 281 M iii Michael O'SULLIVAN was born on 12 Jan 1918. He died on 10 Aug 1972.
+ 282 M iv James (Jim) Francis O'SULLIVAN was born on 7 Feb 1919. He died on 1 Aug 1985.
  283 F v
Alice O'SULLIVAN was born on 4 Apr 1921 in Knocknagorna, Athea, Co. Limerick. She was christened on 5 Apr 1921 in Athea, Co. Limerick. She died on 30 Jan 2003 in Knocknagorna, Athea, Co. Limerick.

Alice's baptismal sponsors were John Dalton and Nora Sheehy.

Alice never married.

81. Denis MCENERY (Mary HUDSON , Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 21 Sep 1882 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 23 Sep 1882 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 19 Jun 1938 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Denis's baptism were Philip Bourke and Johanna McEnery.

I had been under the impression that Denis emigrated to the United States as he arrived in New York on 16 May 1903 (the contact name on the ship manifest being his sister Hannah) and on 9 May 1908 (the contact name this time being his brother John). However, it appears that Denis was either just visting his family in New York in 1903 and 1908 or lived in New York from 1903 before returning home to marry in 1904. Given the gap between the dates of birth of his first and second children it appears Denis may have gone back to work in the U.S. following his marriage, returning home for a visit in 1908 and returning home for good around 1909. The family initially lived in Tarmon Hill, Tarbert, Co. Kerry (perhaps in Ciss's family home?) before settling in Tubbertureen where Denis ran a farm. This farm was presumably the 76-acre property that Denis's brother Edmund sold around 1910 (the farm was sold to a Denis McEnery, surely Denis above). The 1911 census of Ireland shows Denis living in Tubbertureen with his wife, Ciss and three children, along with Ciss's mother and a boarder named Edmund McEnery, presumably his brother Edmund.

Denis died of tuberculosis aged 55.

Denis married Mary (Ciss) EGAN, daughter of Thomas EGAN and Margaret MULVIHILL, on 11 Jun 1904 in St. Mary's Church, Tarbert, Co. Kerry. Mary was born about 20 Oct 1880 in Tarmon Hill, Tarbert, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 22 Oct 1880 in St. Mary's Church, Tarbert, Co. Kerry. She died on 26 Jan 1966. She was buried in Kilfergus Cemetery, Glin, Co. Limerick.

The 1911 census tells us that Mary and her husband, Denis, had had seven children born alive by that time, only three of whom were still living, i.e., those listed on the census return: Margaret, Mary Bridget and Michael.

They had the following children.

  284 F i
Margaret (Queenie) MCENERY was born on 5 Apr 1905 in Tarmon Hill, Tarbert, Co. Kerry. She died on 19 Apr 1925 in Tubbertureen, Co. Kerry.

Queenie was only 20 years old when she died. I was told by a family source that she died of tuberculosis. According to her death certificate, however, Queenie died of "heart failure following pneumonia".
  285 F ii
Mary Bridget MCENERY was born on 1 Feb 1909 in Tarmon Hill, Tarbert, Co. Kerry. She died about 1933.

Mary died of tuberculosis at the age of 24.
  286 F iii
Michael MCENERY was born on 10 Jul 1910 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 12 Jul 1910 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 6 Jul 1928 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Michael's baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah McEnery and Bridget McEnery.

Michael died four days before his 18th birthday. I have been told by a family source that the cause of death was tuberculosis but, according to his death certificate, Michael died of "probably heart failure".
  287 F iv
Johanna MCENERY was born on 21 Mar 1912 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in 1986 or 1987 in Golders Green, London.

Johanna's baptismal sponsors were James O'Connor and Johanna O'Connor.

Johanna, who never married, lived in England where she worked as a children's nurse. The 1939 Register tells us she was living (and perhaps working) at the time at Merchiston, Hare Hatch, Wokingham, Berkshire. At the time of her death in the 1980s she was living in Golders Green in London. All of Johanna's siblings predeceased her.
  288 F v
Hanora (Nora) MCENERY was born on 9 Jun 1913 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died before 1949.

Nora's baptismal sponsors were Edmund McEnery and Ellen Keeffe.

Nora died of tuberculosis in her lates twenties or early thirties. Nora's husband, Paddy, later married her sister Elizabeth.

Hanora married Patrick (Paddy) Joseph O'SULLIVAN, son of Daniel O'SULLIVAN and Ellen HERLIHY, on 21 Nov 1939 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. Patrick was born on 9 Apr 1903 in Trien, Kilmorna, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 11 Apr 1903 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died.

Paddy's baptismal sponsor was Nora Herlihy.
  289 F vi
Elizabeth (Lizzie) MCENERY was born on 26 May 1914 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.

Lizzie's baptismal sponsors were James (surname unknown) and Hanora McEnery. Lizzie may also have been known as "Bell" or "Belle".

Lizzie's husband, Paddy, was previously married to her sister Nora, who had died of tuberculosis.

Elizabeth married Patrick (Paddy) Joseph O'SULLIVAN, son of Daniel O'SULLIVAN and Ellen HERLIHY, on 15 Oct 1949. Patrick was born on 9 Apr 1903 in Trien, Kilmorna, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 11 Apr 1903 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died.

Paddy's baptismal sponsor was Nora Herlihy.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were John Goulding from Knockanure, Co. Kerry and Ellen Carmody from Gortdromasillahy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Paddy had been married previously and a dispensation had to be obtained to allow his marriage to Lizzie to take place. The marriage record states, in Latin, "Disp. super imped. affinitatis in 1ma. gradu", "affinitatis" meaning affinity, which indicates a relationship through marriage (as opposed to cosanguinity which refers to a blood relationship). "1ma gradu" means the relationship was in the first degree, indicating that Paddy must previously have been married to a sister of Lizzie. Based on this, further research was carried out and it was found that a Patrick Joseph O'Sullivan married a Nora McEnery in the fourth quarter of 1939. Lizzie had a sister named Nora, who must have been Paddy's first wife.

82. Jeremiah MCENERY (Mary HUDSON , Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born on 5 Aug 1884 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 7 Aug 1884 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 6 May 1924 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Jeremiah's baptism were John McEnery and Mary McEnery.

Jeremiah farmed in Tubbertureen. His death certificate tells us that he died of "chronic nephritis (one month)". He was 39 years old.

Jeremiah married Mary BIGGANE, daughter of Michael BIGGANE, on 20 Feb 1912 in Church of the Immaculate Conception, Glin, Co. Limerick. Mary was born about 1887 in probably Ballynamuddagh, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died after 6 May 1924.

Mary probably came from Ballynamuddagh, Glin, Co. Limerick.

They had the following children.

+ 290 F i Bridget MCENERY died.
+ 291 F ii Mary MCENERY was born on 11 Jan 1913. She died.
  292 M iii
Michael MCENERY was born in 1916 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in 2004 in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Michael emigrated to the United States. He lived in Hackensack, New Jersey.
  293 M iv
Thomas MCENERY was born in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died.

Thomas died at the age of 16 but I have no further information regarding his birth or death.
+ 294 M v Gerard MCENERY was born in 1921. He died on 29 Apr 1998.

84. James Edward HUDSON (Edmond HUDSON , Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born on 10 Aug 1876 in Carlton, Victoria. He died on 17 Mar 1943 in St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne. He was buried in Fawkner Cemetery, Victoria.

James was orphaned before the age of two, his parents having died six months apart. He also lost his infant brother, Edward, not long afterwards. It is not known who raised James but he did have an aunt, Brigid Hudson, who also lived in Victoria, or he may have been brought up by a family by the name of Lane, into which he would later marry. It appears that after the death of James's father and not long before she herself died, his mother, Annie, and her two young sons moved in with the family of either Maurice Lane (who would later become James's father-in-law) or Maurice's brother James, so it is likely that either Maurice or James took on the responsibilty of the boys after Annie's death.

According to his marriage certificate James was working as a cellarman at the time (1902). He and his wife, Nora (née Lane), lived with their family at 602 Dawson St., West Brunswick, Victoria. From about 1924 until 1940, when he retired, he was a member of the Brunswick council and served as mayor of Brunswick from 1929 to 1930. James also worked as an organiser for Electrical Trades' Union for 30 years, becoming a member of the Federal council of the union, and was Chief Ranger of the Brunswick branch of the Irish National Foresters, a friendly society set up to support Irish nationalism and provide financial and social services to its members.

Note: James's paternal grandmother was Nora Connor from Rathoran, Duagh, and his mother-in-law was Bridget Connor, also from Rathoran. Were Nora and Bridget related?

James married Hanora (Nora) LANE, daughter of Maurice LEANE/LANE and Bridget CONNOR, on 30 Sep 1902 in Sacred Heart Church, Carlton, Victoria. Hanora was born on 18 May 1882 in Carlton, Victoria. She died in 1971 in Melbourne.

Nora's first cousin Thomas Collins had married her husband's aunt Brigid Hudson in 1886 in Victoria.

Of the 10 children born to Nora and her husband, James, only five lived beyond the age of 20.

They had the following children.

Edward died aged just 19, only four months after the death of his 20-year-old brother James.
+ 299 M v Andrew Francis HUDSON was born on 20 Apr 1910. He died on 10 Apr 1951.
  300 F vi
Mary (May) Eileen HUDSON was born on 18 Jul 1911 in Victoria, Australia. She died on 24 Sep 1912.
+ 301 M vii Harold John (Mick) HUDSON was born on 7 May 1913. He died in Apr 1981.
+ 302 F viii Nora (Nonie) Veronica HUDSON was born on 14 Nov 1914. She died in 1999.
+ 303 M ix Eric Stanley HUDSON was born on 9 May 1916. He died on 22 Jul 2007.
  304 M x
Thomas George HUDSON was born on 19 Jul 1919 in Victoria, Australia. He died on 30 Nov 1938.

Thomas, who was only 19 years of age when he died, was a watchmaker.

86. John MOLONEY (Margaret HUDSON , Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born on 22 Dec 1876 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 23 Dec 1876 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died on 10 Mar 1950 in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Abbeyfeale (probably Old Abbey Cemetery), Co. Limerick.

John's baptismal sponsors were John Moloney and Bridget Hudson.

John farmed in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry. When John died the farm passed to his son-in-law Gerard Giltenane. Around 1955 Gerard sold the farm to his wife's uncle James Moloney (i.e., a brother of John) and in 1969 James passed it to his son Ted.

John married Julia BRODERICK (BRODER), daughter of Daniel BRODERICK and Julia HARNETT, on 24 Feb 1906 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. Julia was born on 13 Jan 1872 in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 15 Jan 1872 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She died in 1961 in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry.

Julia and John lived on the 40-acre Broderick family farm in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry. The farm eventually passed to John's nephew Ted Moloney.

In counties Kerry and west Limerick in Julia's time, the Broderick surname was generally shortened to Broder.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were John O'Connor from Islandanny and Ellen Broderick from Ballymacjordan.

John and Julia had the following children.

+ 305 F i Mary Benedict MOLONEY was born on 28 Oct 1909. She died on 7 Apr 1998.
  306 F ii
Julia (Sheila, Sr. Consuela) MOLONEY was born on 14 Dec 1910 in Ballymacjordan, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She died on 15 Jul 2005 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry.

Sheila entered the convent. She took her final vows in 1929 at the Presentation Novitiate in Tralee, Co. Kerry, becoming Sr. Consuela. After a number of postings in Ireland and seven years in New Zealand, Sr. Consuela taught in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry for many years.

88. Honora (Nora) MOLONEY (Margaret HUDSON , Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born on 18 Nov 1879 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 20 Nov 1879 in Duagh, Co. Kerry. She died on 13 May 1923 in Glenshrone, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. She was buried in Old Abbey cemetery, Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick.

The sponsors at Nora's baptism were Michael Hudson and Johanna Hudson.

Church records show a birth date for Nora of 18 January 1880 but Tom Moloney, a grandnephew of Nora's, has discovered that her birth date was probably exactly two months earlier, i.e. 18 November 1879. According to Tom, "While it is true that the Church record gives 18 Jan as the birth date, the Civil record gives the date as 15 December 1879. The civil record itself was registered on 16 January 1880, two days before she was born according to the parish records. I had been aware of this anomaly for some time but it was only recently that I looked into it to see if there might be some explanation. Well it turns out that not just Nora's date but several others are also out of sync. In fact the Church records no baptisms for the months of October and November 1879. Thereafter there is a preponderance of birth dates which are exactly 61 days after the corresponding date in the Civil Records. 61 days is the total number of days in October and November together. It became clear - to me at any rate - what happened. They had skipped two months. If the births for December are pushed back to October then they fall into line with those of the civil record. Likewise January 1880 needs to be pushed back to November 1879. Why did this happen? Surely they weren't so crazy that they didn't know what month it was. I think the baptisms were first recorded in a rough notebook and later entered in the official book. The person writing in the rough book may have written "10-bris" as a shorthand for October. When it came to entering them in the official book, the clerk must have interpreted "10-bris" as December. (That would be reasonable. Anyone reading old baptism registries will be familiar with the abbreviation system where "10-bris" is December, "9-bris" is November, etc.) Subsequent month names must not have been entered at all in the rough book: one would recognise the new month when the dates went from something like 30 or 31 back down to 1 or 2. This misplacing of dates carried on until June 1880. Then, suddenly, they jump back to April 1880 and thereafter carry on properly."
