Descendants of John? FINUCANE (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Fourth Generation

13. Richard HUDSON (Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 3 Feb 1843 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 3 Feb 1843 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 26 Nov 1915 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in probably Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Richard married Margaret THORNTON, daughter of James (Jim) THORNTON and Hanora (Norrie) CUNNINGHAM, on 14 Feb 1874 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Margaret was born about 1848 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 22 Jul 1926 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in probably Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

According to the 1911 census, Richard and Margaret had been married for 36 years and had 17 children born alive, only six of whom were alive in 1911.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage of Richard and Margaret were Michael McEneiry (sic) of Gortdromosillihy, Moyvane, and James Harrington of Kilbaba. Michael was probably the Michael McEnery who was married to Richard's sister Mary. However, Mary's husband was from Tubbertureen, Moyvane rather than Gortdromosillihy.

The other witness, James Harrington, was probably the husband of Johanna Cunningham, a first cousin of Margaret's mother, Norrie Cunningham.

Richard and Margaret had the following children.

Edmond HUDSON was born on 27 Dec 1874 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died on 22 Feb 1875 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Edmond died of  'oppression' when he was only two months old. The duration of the illness was two days.
+ 55 F ii Mary Anne HUDSON was born on 27 Apr 1876. She died in 26 Nov 1912 or shortly thereafter.
+ 56 F iii Hanora (Nora) HUDSON was born on 25 Jul 1877. She died on 7 Feb 1937.
+ 57 M iv John (Jack) HUDSON was born on 28 Nov 1878. He died on 21 Jul 1960.
  58 M v
Richard (Dick) HUDSON was born on 13 Feb 1880 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in 1908 in England. He was buried in England.

Sponsors at Dick's baptism were Thomas Riordan and Honora Thornton.

Dick was a policeman in England and died of pneumonia aged about 27. He was unmarried.
+ 59 M vi James (Jim) HUDSON was born on 29 May 1883. He died on 18 Jun 1947.
+ 60 F vii Margaret (Maggie) HUDSON was born on 13 Feb 1884. She died on 26 Aug 1962.
+ 61 F viii Johanna (Hannie) HUDSON was born on 31 Dec 1888. She died on 7 Jul 1961.

14. William HUDSON (Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 23 May 1844 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 24 May 1844. He died on 2 May 1928 in Lacca East, Kilmorna, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I am very grateful to Tom Moloney of Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry for much of the information you see below on the family of William and his wife, Johanna.

Sponsors at William's baptism were William Connor and John Connnor.

William and Johanna remained on the Hudson family farm in Kilbaha until about 1920 when they moved to Lacca East, Kilmorna, Co. Kerry. They had purchased a 65-acre farm there on 29 March 1919 (for £2,410) from a family by the name of Walsh. William and Johanna's eldest son, Ned, appears to have taken over the Kilbaha farm around this time, while William and Johanna's only other surviving son, Dick, would later inherit the farm in Lacca East.

Apparently William was a striking-looking man with a long white beard.

William married Johanna HAYES, daughter of John HAYES and Bridget CUNNINGHAM, on 7 Jul 1878 in St. Bartholomew's Church, Athea, Co. Limerick. Johanna was born about 28 Apr 1857 in Dirreen, Athea, Co. Limerick. She was christened on 1 May 1857 in St. Bartholomew's Church, Athea, Co. Limerick. She died on 13 Aug 1933 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in probably Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Johanna's baptismal sponsors were John Connor and Catherine Cunningham.

It is not surprising that Johanna married William as they were near neighbours. Dirreen, although in a different county, is right next to William's home townland of Kilbaha; in fact the Hudson farm shared a boundary with part of the Hayes farm in Dirreen.

As Johanna died in Kilbaha it would appear she returned to live there sometime after William's death five years earlier (they had farmed in Kibaha for many years before moving to Lacca East in Kilmorna around 1920). The informant on her death record was her son Ned who appears to have inherited the old Kilbaha farm so it may have been there that Johanna died. Her death record also tells us she died of "probably heart failure following influenza".

I am wondering if Johanna was related to the Hayes family of Templeathea (also in Athea, the parish in which Johanna's home townland of Dirreen is located) because at least two members of the Templeathea Hayes family married members of the family of Johanna's husband, William Hudson: Tom Hayes married William's sister Johanna Hudson in 1881, and about 1903 Tom's second cousin James Hayes married Bridget Hudson, daughter of  William Hudson and Johanna Hayes (and niece of Johanna Hudson). My hunch is that the two Hayes families were indeed related but I have no proof. If anyone has any further information on the family of Johanna Hayes above, I would be very grateful if you would email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were John Shanahan and Kate Ahern.

William and Johanna had the following children.

  62 F i
Mary Ann HUDSON was born about 10 Sep 1878 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 12 Sep 1878 in Athea, Co. Limerick. She died on 27 Mar 1959 in Coilagurteen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Mary Ann's baptism were James Cunningham and Mary Cunningham. Although Mary Ann was born in Kilbaha she was baptised in Athea, Co. Limerick, following the tradition at the time of baptising the first-born child in the mother's home parish.

Mary Ann and her husband, John, lived in Coilagurteen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Note that Coilagurteen is not an actual townland but comprises part of the townland of Carhooearagh (also spelled Carrueragh) and perhaps part of the townland of Kylebwee (also spelled Coilbee). The Doody farm was situated in the Carhooeragh area of Coilagurteen.

It appears that Mary Ann and her husband, John, did not have any children because, in the early 1920s, they gave over their farm to Mary Ann's youngest sister Ellen Broderick (20 years Mary Ann's junior) and Ellen's husband, Paddy, apparently in return for being looked after for the remainder of their lives. The owner's name was not changed by the Valuation Office from John Doody to Patrick Broderick until 1927 but it is possible the actual transfer of ownership had occurred some years earlier.

Mary married John DOODY, son of Jeremiah DOODY and Bridget SCANLON, on 12 Feb 1903 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John was born about 4 Jun 1871 in Coilagurteen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 6 Jun 1871 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 27 Jan 1945 in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

John and Mary farmed in Coilagurteen, Moyvane.

John died in the District Hospital in Listowel of acute cardiac failure.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Edmund Hudson and Ann Doody.

+ 63 F ii Hanora (Nora) HUDSON was born on 9 Dec 1879. She died on 21 Jun 1958.
+ 64 M iii Edmond (Ned) HUDSON was born on 20 Mar 1881. He died on 23 Dec 1969.
  65 M iv
John HUDSON was born on 26 Oct 1882 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened about 28 Oct 1882 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 19 Mar 1883 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in probably Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John's baptismal sponsors were James Cunningham and Mary Cunningham.
+ 66 F v Bridget HUDSON was born on 21 Nov 1883. She died on 28 Apr 1928.
+ 67 F vi Margaret (Mag) HUDSON was born on 27 Nov 1885. She died on 7 Apr 1966.
  68 M vii
William HUDSON was born on 19 Apr 1887 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 31 Mar 1916 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

According to his death certificate William died of "probably tuberculosis of the lung" from which he had been suffering for about 18 months. The certificate also tells us that William was an "ex-policeman". He was only 28 years old when he died.

Based on the above information Royal Irish Constabulary records were checked and it appears that William joined the force in 1906 (aged about 20).
  69 M viii
Thomas HUDSON was born on 6 Sep 1888 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 10 Mar 1913 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

According to his death certificate Thomas died of "probably tuberculosis of the lungs". He was only 24 years of age.
+ 70 M ix Richard (Dick) HUDSON was born on 8 Apr 1891. He died on 7 Jan 1980.
+ 71 F x Johanna (Hannie) HUDSON was born on 11 Jan 1895. She died on 7 Nov 1962.
+ 72 F xi Ellen "Nell Broder" HUDSON was born on 2 Jun 1898. She died on 15 Aug 1976.

15. Mary HUDSON (Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 1846 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died on 7 Mar 1916 in Tubberturreen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

We are basing Mary's approximate year of birth on excerpts from the 1851 census of Ireland which were used in determining eligibility for the old age pension, which was introduced in Ireland in 1908. From this data it appears that Mary was born about 1846. The 1911 census, however, indicates that she was born about 1841. This census also tells us that Mary had 11 children born alive, seven of whom were alive at the time of the census.

A copy of a death certificate has been located for a Mary MacEnery of Toberatooreen (alternative spelling of Tubbertureen) who died of gastroenteritis on 7 March 1916 aged 75, the informant being her son Denis. The only Mary McEnerys of a similar age living in Tubbertureen at that time - that we know of - with a son named Denis, were Mary Hudson above and Mary Moran, wife of Mary Hudson's husband's brother Denis. It is thought more likely that this death certificate relates to Mary Moran rather than Mary Hudson, only because Mary McEnery (née Moran) had been removed from official property valuation records in 1918, indicating that she had died. I have been unable to locate a death record for Mary Hudson above.

Mary married Michael MCENERY, son of Thomas MCENERY and Johanna GALVIN, on 25 Feb 1868 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Michael was born in probably Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in probably between 1886 and 1888 in probably Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

According to Griffiths Valuation records, Michael's wife, Mary, became the lessee of their Tubbertureen farm in 1888, which probably means that Michael had died before then. As Michael's youngest child was born in January 1887 we are assuming that Michael died between 1886 and 1888.

Around 1909 the farm had been purchased by the family and was held in the names of Michael and Mary's sons, Edmund (76 acres) and Jeremiah (64 acres). It is perhaps surprising that Michael and Mary's only other surviving son to remain in Ireland does not appear to have been given a portion of the land, especially as he was older than Jeremiah. However, around 1910, Edmund gave or sold his farm to a Denis McEnery, who we are assuming to be Edmund's brother Denis.

Note: I have seen McEnery spelled sometimes as McEniry.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Edmund Hudson and John Stack.

Mary and Michael had the following children.

  73 M i
Thomas MCENERY was born about 18 Dec 1868 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 20 Dec 1868 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in possibly before 2 Apr 1911 in probably Australia.

Sponsors at Thomas's baptism were William Hudson and Bridget Connor.

We are told that Thomas emigrated to Australia. It is believed that he died before April 1911 as the Irish census of that year tells us that Thomas's parents had 11 children born alive, seven of whom were still alive at the time of the census but we believe that these did not include Thomas. Whereas we have evidence of seven being alive after the 1911 census (Mary Ann, John, Edmund, Johanna, Bridget, Denis and Jeremiah), we have not come across any proof that Thomas was still alive after this time.
+ 74 F ii Mary Ann MCENERY was born on 28 Feb 1871. She died in 1961.
+ 75 M iii John MCENERY was born on 24 Oct 1872. He died on 16 Mar 1939.
  76 M iv
Michael MCENERY was born on 24 Apr 1874 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 28 Apr 1874 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in possibly before 2 Apr 1911.

Sponsors at Michael's baptism were Martin Hudson and Margaret Hudson.

It is believed that Michael died young.
+ 77 M v Edmund (Ned) MCENERY was born on 27 Apr 1876. He died on 25 Dec 1940.
+ 78 F vi Johanna (Hannah) MCENERY was born on 6 Sep 1877.
  79 F vii
Hanora MCENERY was born on 20 Jan 1879 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 23 Jan 1879 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 3 Feb 1890 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Hanora's baptism were Jeremiah Hudson and Johanna Hayes.

Hanora died at the age of 11 of "delicate health", the duration of which was "about 3 months".
+ 80 F viii Bridget MCENERY was born on 25 Feb 1881. She died on 16 Oct 1932.
+ 81 M ix Denis MCENERY was born about 21 Sep 1882. He died on 19 Jun 1938.
+ 82 M x Jeremiah MCENERY was born on 5 Aug 1884. He died on 6 May 1924.
  83 M xi
William MCENERY was born on 6 Jan 1887 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 8 Jan 1887 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 8 Jun 1887 in Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

William's baptismal sponsors were Denis McEnery and Johanna Hudson.

William died at the age of five months of "dentition [teething infection] (1 month) and cerebral disease (about 14 days)".

16. Edmond HUDSON (Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 1849 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died on 11 Jan 1878 in Palmerston St., Melbourne.

Edmond emigrated to Australia around 1870 and settled in the Melbourne area. His occupation on his marriage certificate and that of his son James (although Edmond had died long before James's marriage) is given as "cab proprietor". Edmond's name on James's marriage certificate is Edward and that is the name he appears to have gone by after his marriage.

Edmond was only about 28 years of age when he died. His death certificate tells us that he died of "phthisis pulmonalis" (tuberculosis) from which he had been suffering for nine months. His death certificate also tells us he worked as a labourer and that he died at Palmerston St. (no house number provided), Victoria Ward, Melbourne.

Edward's younger son, also named Edward, was born just a few weeks after his death.

Edmond married Ann (Annie) O'CONNOR, daughter of James O'CONNOR and Catherine (Katie) LARKIN, on 12 Jun 1875 in St. Ignatius' Church, Richmond, Victoria. Ann was born about 1849 in Knockbrane, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She died on 4 Jul 1878 in probably Melbourne area. She was buried in Melbourne General Cemetery.

Hudson researcher Bill Hudson was told that Annie was from Islandanny, Duagh and that her parents were James O'Connor and Ann Larkin. However, it appears that Annie's parents names were actually James O'Connor and Katie (not Ann) Larkin (as per Annie's marriage certificate). Based on this information the Irish Genealogy website, www.irishgenealogy.ie, was searched and a baptismal record was located for an Ann O'Connor of Knockbrane (also spelled Knockbrean), Lixnaw, Co. Kerry, daughter of James O'Connor and Katie Larkin, who was baptised in Lixnaw on 13 October 1849. This date ties in with Annie's age at marriage (25) as given on her marriage certificate (dated 12 June 1875), so it appears that Annie was in fact from Knockbrane, not Islandanny.

The marriage certificate also tells us that Annie worked as a servant and that her "usual" address was Melbourne, while the usual address of her husband, Edmond (also known as Edward), was Carlton. Witnesses to the marriage were James Lane and Ellen [very difficult to decipher but could be] Mahoney. Could James Lane have been a relative of Maurice Lane, whose daughter Nora would, many years later, marry Annie and Edmond's son James?

Annie died aged only 29, just six months after the death of Edmond. As Edmond had died of tuberculosis, which is contagious, it is possible that Annie also succumbed to the disease, and perhaps her infant son, Edward, as well, as he died seven months after Annie at the age of just 12 months.

A newspaper notice following Annie's death read "The Friends of the late Mrs. ANN HUDSON (widow of the late Mr. Edward Hudson) are respectfully invited to follow her remains to the place of Interment, Melbourne General Cemetery. The funeral will move from the residence of Mr. Lane, 10 Lynch-street, Carlton, THIS DAY, 4th inst., at one o'clock." It is probable that Mr. Lane was either Maurice Lane or James Lane mentioned above. The newspaper notice suggests that Annie - and her two young sons - may have moved in with the family of Maurice/James after Edmond's death.

They had the following children.

+ 84 M i James Edward HUDSON was born on 10 Aug 1876. He died on 17 Mar 1943.
  85 M ii
Edward HUDSON was born in Feb 1878 in Melbourne, Australia. He died in Feb 1879 in Melbourne, Australia.

Edward died at the age of 12 months.

17. Margaret HUDSON (Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 3 Jun 1852 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 4 Jun 1852 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 14 May 1910 in Sluicequarter, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Abbeyfeale Old Churchyard, Co. Limerick.

I am very grateful to Tom Moloney from Duagh for so much of the information you see below on the family of Margaret and her husband, John Moloney.

The sponsor at Margaret's baptism was Mary Collins.

Margaret died of tuberculosis aged 57.

Margaret married John MOLONEY, son of John MOLONEY and Margaret O'BRIEN, on 15 Feb 1876 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. John was born about 1 Jul 1849 in Rathcahill, Monagea, Co. Limerick. He was christened on 1 Jul 1849 in Monagea, Co. Limerick. He died on 3 Feb 1936 in Sluicequarter, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Abbeyfeale Old Churchyard, Co. Limerick.

The sponsors at John's baptism were Patrick Enright and Bridget Mulcahy.

John and his wife, Margaret, lived in Sluicequarter, Duagh, Co. Kerry. Sluicequarter is located in the area of Duagh known as Islandanny, and the names Sluicequarter and Islandanny are often used interchangeably. The name Islandanny seems to have been used more in the 19th century when referring to Sluicequarter, while Sluicequarter appears to have been more commonly used in the 20th century.

Islandanny is not actually an official townland in Duagh parish, rather it is generally regarded as a grouping of the following townlands that lie north of the river Feale: Sluicequarter, Rea, Knocknacaheragh, Pilgrim Hill, Lacca East and Shronebeirne. The name Sluicequarter is not in fact used so much any more; Kilmorna - not an official townland either - has been increasingly used as an address by locals in recent decades due to the location of their local post office (now closed) in nearby Kilmorna.

Duagh researchers may also be interested in knowing that the other four townlands north of the river Feale are Rathoran, Kingsland, Islandboy East and Islandboy West. These last two townlands mentioned should not be confused with Islandboy which is another townland in Duagh, located south of the river. All three Islandboys were islands on the river several centuries ago. Islandboy West amounts to no more than about nine acres and has had nobody living there for a very long time, if ever. Islandboy East is just one farm. The current proprietor (in 2014) of the Islandboy East farm is John O'Connor (who is related to the O'Connors of Rathoran). Many thanks go to Tom Moloney from Duagh for clarifying the location of these Duagh addresses.

John died on 3 February 1936, not 14 February as engraved on his headstone.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were John Horgan and Richard Hudson.

The parish records give the date of the marriage as 15 February 1875 but it is actually 15 February 1876. One can see from the registers that the entries for January and February 1876 follow those of December 1875 but the year number was not changed when the new year began, hence the confusion.

Margaret and John had the following children.

+ 86 M i John MOLONEY was born on 22 Dec 1876. He died on 10 Mar 1950.

Edmund MOLONEY was born on 26 Jul 1878 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 28 Jul 1878 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died in probably before 30 Mar 1901.

The sponsors at Edmund's baptism were Edmund Hudson and Johanna Hudson.

It is thought that Edmund died as a child, most likely well before the 1901 census and definitely before the death of his father in 1936.

Denis J. MOLONEY was born on 23 Apr 1881 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 24 Apr 1881 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died on 7 Jan 1946 in New Brighton, Pennsylvania. He was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Brighton, Pennsylvania.

Denis's baptismal sponsors were Thomas Moloney and Mary Moloney.

Denis studied for the priesthood at All Hallows College, Dublin and was ordained for the diocese of Pittsburgh on 25 June 1907. He immediately left for the United States and began working as assistant pastor at the St. John the Evangelist's Church, South Side, Pittsburgh in October 1907. He was promoted to pastor five years later and thereafter served at St. Ann's Church, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania (1912-1923), St Malachy's Church, South Side, Pittsburgh (1923-25), and finally in the parish of St. Joseph, New Brighton, Pennsylvania (1925-1946). Fr. Denis was also dean ('vicar forane') of Lawrence County, Pennsylvania from 1935 to 1946. He died after a brief illness in January 1946.

Margaret MOLONEY was born on 21 Sep 1883 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 23 Sep 1883 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She died on 26 May 1893 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Daniel Moloney and Margaret Horgan.

Margaret died at the age of nine from gastritis from which she had been suffering for one month.

Thomas (Tom) MOLONEY was born on 22 Jun 1885 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 24 Jun 1885 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died in probably before 30 Mar 1901.

Baptismal sponsors were James Moloney and Mary Horgan.

It appears Tom died as a child, probably well before the 1901 census.
+ 92 F vii Mary Ann MOLONEY was born on 8 Nov 1886. She died on 22 May 1922.

Johanna (Hannah) MOLONEY was born on 13 Oct 1891 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 15 Oct 1891 in St. Brigid's Church, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She died on 3 Apr 1908 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry.

Johanna's baptismal sponsors were Michael McEnery and Hanora Kirby.

Johanna died aged just 16 from "phthisis" (tuberculosis) from which she had been suffering for about a year and a half.

18. Johanna HUDSON (Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 1855 in Kilbaha North, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died on 1 Mar 1932 in Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick. She was buried in Templeathea Cemetery, Co. Limerick.

Johanna's niece Bridget Hudson would marry James Hayes, a second cousin of Johanna's husband, Tom Hayes.

Johanna married Thomas (Tom) HAYES, son of Michael HAYES and Catherine BROUDER, on 22 Feb 1881 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Thomas was born on 5 Oct 1856 in Fairy Street, Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick. He died on 25 May 1918 in Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick. He was buried in Templeathea Cemetery, Co. Limerick.

Tom was an only child. His baptismal sponsors were Thomas Hayes and Helen Hayes.

The 1911 census tells us that Tom and his wife, Johanna, had been married for 30 years and had 10 children born alive, seven of whom were still alive at the time of the census.

A Daniel Hayes of Templeathea, who died on 3 April 1973 aged 80, is buried in Templeathea Churchyard. Could Daniel have been related to Tom's family? Daniel's wife, Mary (Molly), who died on 20 January 1989 aged 98, is buried with him. A little research has revealed that Daniel was born in 1892 to Denis Hayes and Mary McKenna who were married in Athea on 24 Feb 1870. Denis was a son of John Hayes and Mary was a daughter of Thomas McKenna. Molly was born in Glengore, Co. Limerick to James White and Hanora McElligott; and she and Daniel were married in Athea on 1 February 1917.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Michael Hayes and William Hudson.

Johanna and Thomas had the following children.

  96 F ii
Honora (Nora) HAYES was born on 24 Feb 1883 in Fairy Street, Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick. She was christened on 26 Feb 1883 in Athea, Co. Limerick. She died on 16 Oct 1913 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was buried on 18 Oct 1913 in Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Sponsors at Nora's baptism were Jeremiah Hudson and Johanna Hudson.

Nora appears to have emigrated to the United States around 1906. She was working as a servant for a William Cohn of Marlborough Ave., Pittsburgh at the time of the 1910 census and it seems she returned to Ireland on a visit in 1911 as Ellis Island records show she sailed from Queenstown on 6 October of that year . She was travelling with a Hannah Cooney whose husband Patrick lived at 855 Kirkpatrick St. in Pittsburg. Hanora also gave Patrick as her American contact on the ship manifest. Both Nora and Hannah stated that they had previously been in the U.S. and had been in Pittsburgh in 1906.

Sadly, Nora died from drowning at the age of 30. Her death certificate states that her death was "probably suicide" and tells us she was found "at a point between the Allegheny and Mononahela rivers" in Pittsburgh. She was unmarried. Her address at the time of her death was 1104 Progress St., Pittsburgh and the informant on the death certificate was a Patrick Cooney of 1604 Progress St., presumably the same Patrick Cooney mentioned above. Nora's brother John had died in a drowning accident in Ireland five years earlier.

Thomas HAYES (caution: not verified) was born before 1 Mar 1894 in Fairy Street, Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick. He died before 1 Mar 1894 in probably Fairy Street, Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick.

I have been told Tom and Johanna had a son named Thomas who was born and died before the birth of a second Thomas in 1894. However I have been unable to find evidence of the first Thomas's birth or death, hence the caution.

Thomas (Tom) David HAYES was born on 1 Mar 1894 in Fairy Street, Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick. He was christened on 2 Mar 1894 in Athea, Co. Limerick. He died on 24 Jul 1962 in Pass Christian, Mississippi. He was buried in St. Paul Catholic Cemetery, Pass Christian, Mississippi.

Tom's baptismal sponsors were Michael Moran and Ann O'Connor.

Tom became a priest. He left Ireland for the U.S. on 20 September 1920 and served in Mississippi. His first posting was Natchez; by 1930 he had moved to Laurel; and by 1940 he was in Pass Christian, where he died in 1962 aged about 67.

19. Brigid HUDSON (Edward (Edmond) HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 21 Feb 1856 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 23 Feb 1856 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in 1943 in East Brunswick, Victoria, Australia.

Sponsors at Brigid's baptism were Patrick Loughnane and Brigid Connor.

Brigid emigrated to Australia around 1870.

Brigid's nephew James Edward Hudson would, in 1902 in Victoria, marry her husband's first cousin Nora Lane.

Brigid married Thomas COLLINS, son of Thomas COLLINS and Ann LEANE/LANE, in 1886 in Victoria, Australia. Thomas was born in 1863 in Melbourne. He died in 1946.

They had the following children.

Margaret married William WARD. William died.

22. Richard Dennis HUDSON (William HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born in 1852 in Philadelphia. He died on 10 Jul 1892 in Philadelphia. He was buried in Old Cathedral Cemetery, Philadelphia.

According to the 1870 census, Richard was an apprentice to a cooper. He later worked as a park guard in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. He died of tuberculosis aged only about 40.

Richard married Julia Christina DREHER. Julia was born on 14 Apr 1859 in Philadelphia. She died on 11 Jan 1946 in Philadelphia. She was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Pennsylvania.

Julia's parents were both German and she became a Catholic when she married Richard. Julia outlived Richard by more than 50 years, having become a widow in her early thirties. She never remarried.

The 1910 census tells us that Julia worked as a "janitress" in an institution.

They had the following children.

+ 113 F i Helen Marie (Jerrie) HUDSON was born on 25 Oct 1885. She died on 15 Jan 1964.

Joseph (Joe) Edward HUDSON was born on 28 Aug 1888 in Philadelphia. He died on 15 Dec 1948 in Philadelphia. He was buried on 18 Dec 1948 in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Pennsylvania.

The 1910 census tells us that Joe worked as an inspector in a ball bearing company. By 1940 he was an engineer in a locomotive factory.

Joe died of lung cancer aged 60. He never married, and he and his brother Richard lived with their mother until the end of her life. They both died within two years of her death
  116 M iv
Richard (Dick) Dennis HUDSON was born in Sep 1890 in Philadelphia. He died in 1947 in Philadelphia. He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Pennsylvania.

The 1910 census tells us that Dick worked as a blacksmith's labourer. By 1940 he was working as a hammerman in an electrical unit factory.

Dick, who never married, died of cancer aged about 56. He and his brother Joe lived with their mother until the end of her life, both dying within two years of her death.

27. John CUNNINGHAM (Johanna HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 1851 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 1 Jan 1930 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick.

The information below on John's family may be incorrect: I was given detailed information on John and his family by a very reliable family source but when I came across their details in the 1901 census, I saw that John's mother is listed as Margaret (rather than Johanna, who had died in 1897). Furthermore John's county of birth is given as Limerick in the census whereas our John was definitely born in Kerry. Therefore either the family listed below is not that of our John or errors were made in filling out the census form. Any assistance in establishing the correct names of John's family members would be much appreciated. If you can help, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com. Thank you. For now I have added cautions to the names of John's wife and children.

John died from a stroke.

John married Honora (Nora) CREGAN (caution: not verified), daughter of Denis CREGAN, on 27 Jan 1891 in Glin, Co. Limerick. Honora was born about 1859 in Co. Kerry. She died on 3 Jun 1941 in Glin, Co. Limerick.

John and Nora farmed in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick.

According to the 1911 census, John and Nora had been married for 20 years and had eight children born alive, seven of whom were alive at time of the census. All seven are listed. However, it appears John and Nora had nine children born alive, two of whom died before the 1911 census: John born in 1893 (i.e. the first John) and Johanna.

They had the following children.

  117 M i
Bryan CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born on 2 Nov 1891 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died on 15 Apr 1939 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick.

I was told Bryan emigrated to the United States. However, death registry records tells us Bryan died in Glin in 1939 of pneumonia aged 45 (he was in fact 47). He was a farmer and was unmarried. As the eldest son, our Bryan above would have inherited the family farm so I think it unlikely he emigrated.
  118 M ii
John CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born on 3 Apr 1893 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died before 10 Feb 1899 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John died as a child.
  119 F iii
Margaret CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 1893 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died on 2 Apr 1931 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick.

I have been told Margaret emigrated to the United States. However, we know that Margaret died in Glin in 1931 of "probably heart disease" aged only 37. Perhaps she had indeed emigrated but had returned.
+ 120 M iv Denis CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born on 25 Jun 1894. He died in Jun 1987.
  121 M v
Richard CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born on 20 Dec 1895 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died in probably U.S..

Richard emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York on 3 April 1923. Acording to the ship manifest his contact in New York was his brother John who had emigrated three years earlier and who lived at 2437 8th Avenue.
  122 F vi
Johanna CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born on 7 Sep 1897 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died on 23 Aug 1899 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick.

Johanna died just two weeks before her second birthday. The cause of death was "probably debility from birth".
  123 F vii
John CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born on 10 Feb 1899 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died after 1998 in U.S..

John emigrated to the United States at the age of 21, arriving in New York on 11 June 1920. His contact in New York was a cousin, Denis Cregan, who lived in Long Island City. It appears John was the first of several siblings to emigrate to the U.S.
  124 F viii
Catherine (Cathy) CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born on 23 Jan 1901 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. She died on 8 Jan 1975 in Newcastle West, Co. Limerick. She was buried in Kilfergus Cemetery, Glin, Co. Limerick.

I am told Catherine was the only member of the family who did not emigrate, although it appears her eldest brother Bryan also did not emigrate. She lived in Clogough and never married.

Patrick (Paddy) CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born on 1 Nov 1904 in Clogough, Glin, Co. Limerick. He died on 4 Jun 1972 in Glin, Co. Limerick. He was buried in Kilfergus Cemetery, Glin, Co. Limerick.

Paddy emigrated to the United States and retired to Glin where he died. He never married.

28. Richard (Richie Bryan) CUNNINGHAM (Johanna HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 2 Jun 1852 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 4 Jun 1852 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 24 Dec 1926 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

The sponsor at Richie's baptism was Daniel Kearney.

Richie was also known as 'Richie Bryan'. He and his wife, Brigie, lived in Kilbaha.

The writer of a handwritten family tree on the 'Moyvane and District' page of Jer Kennelly's online album collection (see Links page on this website) tells us that "A son of this marriage [i.e., the marriage of Richie and Brigie], Myles or Sean Cunningham, settled in Killeedy, Co. Limerick and on 19th Jan. 1851 married Eliz. Dore of [what looks like] Darriry whose grandfather, Maurice Dower, had come down to Killeedy from Gortnagloss about the same time as James Dower moved to Newtownsandes. Maurice and James may have been brothers". However, because Richie and Brigie married in 1892, no son of that marriage could have married in 1851 and because Elizabeth Dore's husband was Oliver Cunningham, it is possible that Richie had a relative named Oliver Cunningham. Unfortunately I have been unsuccessful in finding out any other information on Oliver.

Richard married Brigid (Brigie) DORE, daughter of John DORE and Honora (Nora) LYNDON, on 27 Feb 1892 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Brigid was born about 17 Dec 1857 in Moyvane South (Shronagraga), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 19 Dec 1857 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 6 Jul 1916 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

They had the following children.

+ 126 F i Mary (Molly) CUNNINGHAM was born on 10 Mar 1893. She died on 22 Jul 1976.
+ 127 M ii Bryan (Brianeen) CUNNINGHAM was born on 10 Sep 1894. He died on 21 Dec 1966.
  128 F iii
Johanna (Sr. Mary Ellen) CUNNINGHAM was born on 25 Nov 1895 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 27 Nov 1895 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 13 Aug 1989 in Concordia, Kansas.

Johanna's baptismal sponsors were Michael Stack and Mary Dore.

Johanna was also known as Hannie. She and her sister Maggie left Ireland in 1915 to join the Sisters of St. Joseph at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, Kansas.

Ellis Island records (on www.ellisisland.org) show that the sisters arrived in New York on 12 September 1915 and were joining a "cousin", Bishop John Francis Cunningham, of Concordia, Kansas. Johanna and Maggie appear to have been first cousins twice removed of the bishop's (their grandfather Bryan Cunningham would have been a first cousin of his). Bishop Cunningham apparently encouraged several other Cunningham family members - along with Mulvihill and Fitzgerald relatives - to enter religious life in Kansas.

Sr. Mary Ellen was a nursing sister and worked in El Paso, Texas for a time before returning to Kansas to work in St. Anthony's Hospital in Concordia.
+ 129 F iv Hanora (Nora) CUNNINGHAM was born on 6 Dec 1896. She died on 19 Feb 1988.
  130 M v
Thomas CUNNINGHAM was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 18 Apr 1898 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I have been given a baptismal date of 18 April 1898 by a family source for Thomas, which is the same baptismal date I was given for his sisters Margaret and Ellen whom we know to have been been twins. However, Thomas's name is not listed in the birth register with Margaret and Ellen.

It appears Thomas may have died very young as we have no account of his life beyond his baptism.
  131 F vi
Margaret (Sr. Mary Estelle) CUNNINGHAM was born on 17 Apr 1898 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 18 Apr 1898 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 3 Oct 1987 in Concordia, Kansas.

Margaret and Ellen were twins. Margaret's baptismal sponsors were not recorded on the parish register.

Margaret was also known as Maggie. She and her sister, Hannie, left Ireland in 1915 to join the Sisters of St. Joseph at Nazareth Motherhouse in Concordia, Kansas.

Sr. Mary Estelle, who was a nursing sister, worked for more than 30 years in St. Joseph's Hospital in Belvidere, Illinois. In 1973, due to frail health, she returned to Concordia where she continued to help with nursing duties.
  132 F vii
Ellen CUNNINGHAM was born on 17 Apr 1898 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 17 Apr 1898 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ellen, a twin, died shortly after birth.
  133 F viii
Eileen CUNNINGHAM was born on 13 Aug 1899 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 19 Jan 1988 in Askeaton, Co. Limerick. She was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Eileen is listed (as Ellie) in the 1911 census return for the household of her aunt Manie Dore in Moyvane South. In 1928 Eileen emigrated to the United States and lived in New York for many years. She never married and retired to Listowel where she lived with her sister Bridie.

+ 134 M ix John (Jack) CUNNINGHAM was born on 1 Jul 1901. He died on 7 Nov 1995.
  135 F x
Bridget (Bridie) CUNNINGHAM was born on 7 Apr 1904 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 9 Apr 1904 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 24 Nov 1982 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Bridie's baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Kennelly and Elizabeth Kennelly.

Bridie was a nurse in London and later in Listowel District Hospital. In Listowel she spent many years working on night duty - she would do three months of 12-hour shifts, getting only a one or two day break before the next three-month cycle would start. Bridie lived on Court House Road in Listowel.

29. Johanna CUNNINGHAM (Johanna HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 17 Jun 1854 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 19 Jun 1854 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 12 Dec 1927 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

The sponsor at Johanna's baptism was Edmund Hudson.

It appears that Johanna was only 16 years of age when she married William, who was probably about 35 years old at the time of their marriage. Her last child, Michael, was born when Johanna was only 25 years of age.

Johanna married William O'CONNOR, son of Patrick CONNORS and Mary DALTON (caution: not verified), on 12 Feb 1871 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane). William was born in probably Oct 1835 in probably Dirreen Lower, Athea, Co. Limerick. He was christened in probably 19 Oct 1835 in probably Athea, Co. Limerick. He died in Apr 1920 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at William's baptism were Daniel Mullane and Johanna Casey.

William farmed in Kilbaha North.

In the 1901 census there is a return for the household of Kate O'Connor, also of Kilbaha North. She is the only one listed for the household, and her occupation is "agricultural labourer". The writing on the census is too faint to make out her age. She is not listed in the Kilbaha returns in 1911. If she was unrelated to our O'Connor family perhaps she was connected to Patrick O'Connor who moved to Kilbaha from Shronebeirne, Duagh in the mid-19th century (see notes for Patrick O'Connor, father of William above).

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Michael Hanrahan and Daniel Connell.

Johanna and William had the following children.

  136 M i
Patrick (Paddy Otter) O'CONNOR was born on 20 Nov 1871 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 23 Nov 1871 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 9 Nov 1963 in Beenbrack, Lisaniskea, Knockanure, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Paddy's baptism were Edmund Cunningham and Honoria Cunningham.

Paddy was known as "Otter" and "Paddy Otter" because he had a passion for fishing. He lived to be 91 and was still cycling until shortly before his death.

It is surprising Paddy did not inherit the family farm in Kilbaha given that he was the eldest son. It was Paddy's next surviving brother, Jack, who got the farm. Jack married just three days before Paddy in March 1916, by which time Paddy was farming in Lisaniskea, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Patrick married Johanna (Hannah) AHERN, daughter of Michael AHERN, on 7 Mar 1916 in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. Johanna was born about 1882 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in probably Beenbrack, Lisaniskea, Knockanure, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

Hannah was from Leitrim Middle in Moyvane. She and her husband, Paddy, lived in Beenbrack in Lisaniskea, Knockanure. They had no children. The farm passed to a relative of Hannah's (perhaps a niece?) named Margaret Ahern who was married to a Joe Collins.

Bryan O'CONNOR was born on 5 Dec 1872 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 7 Dec 1872 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 19 Jul 1889 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Bryan's baptismal sponsors were Richard Cunningham and Margaret Cunningham.

Bryan died at the age of 16 from "pulmonary consumption" from which he had been suffering for a year.
+ 138 F iii Mary Anne (Mainanne) O'CONNOR was born on 6 Apr 1874. She died on 11 Sep 1951.
+ 139 M iv John (Jack Bill) O'CONNOR was born on 25 May 1876. He died on 8 Nov 1959.

Michael O'CONNOR was born on 2 Jun 1880 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 5 Jun 1880 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 3 Mar 1912 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Old Cemetery, Knockanure, Co. Kerry.

According to Michael's death record, he was aged 24 when he died in 1912, which would mean he was born in 1887 or 1888 rather than 1880. His headstone gives his age at death as 27, which would mean he was born in 1884 or 1885. Michael's baptismal record, showing his year of birth to be 1880, is the most dependable indication of date of birth (even moreso than birth records as births were often registered many months after the event whereas baptisms in Ireland at that time typically took place a day or two after the birth).

Michael died at the age of 31. I had been told by a family source that he died of a perforated appendix. However, according to his death record, he died of pneumonia.

31. Edward CUNNINGHAM (Johanna HUDSON , Margaret FINUCANE , John? ) was born about 15 Nov 1856 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 17 Nov 1856 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 11 Jan 1924 in Chicago.

Sponsors at Edward's baptism were Richard Hudson and Ellen Relihan.

Edward was educated at St. Michael's College in Listowel. He emigrated to the United States around 1879 and settled in Chicago where he worked as a clerk in a railway company.

Edward married Ida GUTJAHR, daughter of Martin GUTJAHR and Anna Wilhelmina WEINHOLD, about 1888 in U.S.. Ida was born in May 1865 in Germany. She died in probably between 1930 and 1940 in probably Chicago.

Ida emigrated from Germany in 1900.

They had the following children.

Earnest CUNNINGHAM was born in Feb 1890 in Chicago.

Ella CUNNINGHAM was born in Jan 1893 in Chicago. She died in 1982 in Chicago.
