The Egan surname is common throughout Ireland. Its original form was MacAodhagáin (MacEgan) but the Mac has now been largely dropped. Keegan is a variant. The name originated in the Roscommon/Galway area where the MacAodhagáins acted as 'brehons' or lawyers and judges to the ruling families. Over the centuries, however, they were dispersed southwards, settling mainly in north Munster and east Leinster, in what are now counties Tipperary, Offaly and Kilkenny. The Egans are now most numerous in Connaught and Leinster.
