42. Margaret (Madge) O'SULLIVAN (Julia DOODY , Michael ) was born on 27 Nov 1897 in Glynn, Mourneabbey, Co. Cork. She was christened in Analeentha Church, Mourneabbey, Co. Cork. She died on 21 Apr 1925 in Glynn, Mourneabbey, Co. Cork. She was buried in Donoughmore Cemetery, Stuake, Co. Cork.

Madge died died of tuberculosis aged only 27. She is buried with her parents in the O'Sullivan family plot in Donoughmore Cemetery, although her name is not listed on the headstone.

Margaret married John (Jack) LYNCH, son of Daniel LYNCH, on 2 May 1918 in Burnfort Church, Kilshannig, Co. Cork. John died.

Jack worked as a labourer. Madge was his second wife, his first wife, with whom he had two sons, having died. Jack had been living in Kilquane, Mourneabbey, Co. Cork before his marriage to Madge and later lived with Madge and their young family in Glynn in the cottage where Madge had grown up. The cottage, which is now derelict, eventually passed to a nephew of Jack's third wife, Ellie, but it is not known if it remains in the ownership of this nephew's family.

They had the following children.

48. James (Jim) DOODY (Michael (Mike) , Michael ) was born on 14 Nov 1896 in Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. He died in Apr 1979 in North Cotswold, Gloucestershire. He was buried in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire.

Jim lived in Gloucestershire. It is thought he may have worked as a harness maker (possibly with his father who also worked in the saddlery business) before leaving Ireland. I have also been told he may also have worked in the insurance business in Ireland.

James married Audrey Mabel BROWN on 22 Dec 1947 in Ashton, Lancashire. Audrey was born on 22 Jun 1918 in Hackney, London. She died on 18 Jul 2000 in Colchester, Essex. She was buried in Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire.

Audrey was living in Morecambe, Lancashire in 1939. We do not know where she and her husband, Jim, met, but during and immediately after World War II both worked at a relief centre in Windrush Camp in Gloucestershire, initially looking after prisoners of war and subsequently taking care of people displaced by the war. Audrey, Jim and their family later moved to Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire.

Tom became a doctor, graduating from UCC in 1925. He then moved to London and it is known that in 1939 he was living at 854 Lea Bridge Road in Leyton. Not long afterwards he returned with his young family to Co. Cork where he ran a practice in Ballymartle and Carrigaline before moving to Crosshaven around 1943. The family later moved to Dublin where they lived on Sorrento Terrace, Dalkey. Tom died in 1953 aged only 50.

He and his family lived in Wimbledon where the Patrick Doody Clinic is named after him. Paddy spent his retirement in Castletown, Caithness, Scotland.

62. Matthew Joseph RYAN (Ellen (Ellie) DOODY , Michael ) was born on 23 Feb 1895 in Co. Tipperary. He died in 1969 in Harrow, London.

The 1911 census tells us that 16-year-old Matthew was living with his family in Balfast and working as a paper machinist. He emigrated to the United States in August 1918 and we know from his World War I Draft Registration Card that he was living and working in Naugatuck, Connecticut in September 1918 (his address at 57 Oak St. being that of his aunt Catherine Kiely). The Registration Card also tells us that he had had the tops of four fingers amputated on his left hand. Matthew appears to have moved back to Ireland shortly afterwards as he was married in Belfast in 1919 giving his address as 10 Gamble St., Belfast (his family lived at 14 Gamble St.).

Matthew later settled in England and we know from the 1939 Register that he and his wife and family were living at the time at 48 Ferdinand Street, St. Pancras, London.

Matthew married Sarah MCKEOWN, daughter of John MCKEOWN, on 12 Dec 1919 in Belfast. Sarah was born on 28 Feb 1895.

Marriage Notes:

Sarah's occupation on the marriage certificate is shop assistant while Matthew's is sailor.

Matthew and Sarah had the following children.

63. Catherine (Kathleen) RYAN (Ellen (Ellie) DOODY , Michael ) was born in 1896 in Co. Tipperary. She died in 1992 in Syracuse, New York.

Kathleen emigrated to the United States in 1919. At the time of the 1930 and 1940 censuses she and her husband, Edward, and their family were living in Cazenovia, New York. Living with them in 1940 were a niece and nephew, Kathleen Golden who was 18 years of age and 14-year-old Charles Golden, both born in New York.

Catherine married Anthony Edward (Edward) SMYTHE on 19 Apr 1924 in Syracuse, New York. Anthony was born in 1898 in Ireland. He died in 1945 in Cazenovia, New York.

Edward emigrated to the United States in 1914. He was working as a night watchman at a die press company at the time of the 1930 census, and 10 years later he was a school janitor.

67. Johanna Mary (Violet, Vi) RYAN (Ellen (Ellie) DOODY , Michael ) was born on 16 Apr 1902 in 127 George's St., Cork. She died in 1963 in Cambridge. She was buried in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Johanna was called Violet or Vi by some family members. According to family sources Johanna was born in 1904. However, the 1939 Register, available on the Findmypast website, gives her date of birth as 16 April 1902 which, interestingly, is the same date of birth as a Matthew Ryan, located on the Irish Genealogy website, who was born in Cork to a mother whose maiden name was Doody. As we know that Johanna's brother Matthew Joseph listed here who was born on 23 Feb 1895 survived to adulthood it looks like a transcription error occurred (giving Johanna's father's name rather than Johanna). I am therefore assuming that Johanna was actually born on 16 April 1902.

In the 1939 Register Johanna is listed with her parents at 71 Burnham Road, St. Albans, Hertfordshire. Her husband, Harry, who was a member of the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) is not listed, presumably owing to war duties. There are two lines in the Register after Johanna's entry which are blacked out and I am assuming these lines relate to two of Johanna's children. They are lacked out because no details of people who may still be living are available to the public by Findmypast.

By 1953 Johanna, Harry and their family were living at No. 20 P.T.C., R.A.F. Cranage, Middlewich, Cheshire. Johanna lived in Newmarket, Suffolk in the later years of her life.

Note: The Birth Register mistakenly shows the name Matthew instead of Johanna but there is a note written alongside the entry explaining that there is an error.

Johanna married Harry Douglas LITTLE, son of George Arthur T. LITTLE and Charlotte Elizabeth DAVIDSON, about 1932. Harry was born on 14 Apr 1907 in Cheshire. He died on 30 Aug 1959 in Royal Air Force Hospital, Ely, Cambridgeshire. He was buried in Newmarket, Suffolk.

Harry was a member of the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) His address at the time of his death was 164 Windsor Road, Newmarket, Suffolk.

They had the following children.

73. Monica Esther M. RYAN (Ellen (Ellie) DOODY , Michael ) was born on 4 Apr 1914 in 14 Gamble St., Belfast. She died on 20 Jun 1997 in Comox, British Columbia, Canada.

Monica married Cecil Meigel ARRIETA, son of Justo (Justin) ARRIETA and Cecelia Bertram MELROSE, on 14 Apr 1940 in Hampstead, London. Cecil was born on 5 Nov 1908 in Hammersmith, London. He died on 21 Aug 1981 in Comox, British Columbia, Canada.

Cecil was a commercial traveller for a wallboard manufacturing company (according to the 1939 Register). He served with the R.A.F. (Royal Air Force) during World War II and spent time as a prisoner of war after his plane came down in Germany.

In 1953 Cecil changed his surname to Ryan (his wife's surname) by deed poll.

The family later emigrated to Canada.
