Descendants of Mary DILLANE (caution: relationship to sons John and James not verified) (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Second Generation

3. Ellen SHANAHAN (caution: not verified) (Mary ) was born in 1806 in probably Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died on 4 Nov 1871 in Carlisle, Kentucky. She was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Paris, Kentucky.

I have no evidence to prove that Ellen was in fact a daughter of Cornelius and Mary but I have been DNA-matched with a great-great-great-grandchild of Ellen's (a descendant of Catherine Dillawn (née Gregory)) that indicates a close connection between Ellen, Cornelius and Mary. I have also been told that Ellen's daughter, Mary Stack, was related to Ellen McQuinn/Quinn, daughter of Cornelius's daughter Catherine who married James McQuinn/Quinn. Both Ellen McQuinn and Mary lived in Nicholas County, Kentucky. This information was provided by a descendant of Mary Stack.

Ellen Shanahan emigrated to the United States. She and her second husband, George Gregory. along with with their two daughters, Nancy and Catherine, left Ireland around 1950, while Mary (Stack), Ellen's daughter from her first marriage, and Mary's half-brother, Richard Gregory, remained. Two years later, Mary and Richard rejoined their family, arriving in New Orleans in 1852, by which time their youngest sibling, John, had been born in Paris, Kentucky where the family had settled.

Ellen married Richard STACK on 15 Feb 1831 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Richard died.

Richard died when his daughter, Mary, was a child. Ellen later remarried.

They had the following children.

+ 8 F i Mary STACK was born about 6 Jan 1832. She died on 3 Mar 1912.

Ellen also married George GREGORY about 1841 in Co. Kerry. George was born in 1809 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in 1903 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Paris, Kentucky.

They had the following children.

  9 F ii
Nancy GREGORY was born in 1842 in Co. Kerry. She died in 1887 in Plattsburg, Missouri.

Nancy married Maurice GOLDEN. Maurice was born in 1839 in Knockanure, Co. Kerry. He died in 1903 in Plattsburg, Missouri.
  10 M iii
Richard GREGORY was born in 1844 in Co. Kerry. He died in 1921 in Ruddles Mills, Kentucky.

Richard married Margaret CONWAY. Margaret was born in 1853 in Millersburg, Kentucky. She died in 1929 in Paris, Kentucky.
+ 11 F iv Catherine GREGORY was born in 1847. She died in 1929.
  12 M v
John GREGORY was born in 1850 in Paris, Kentucky. He died on 1 Feb 1921 in Taylor, Texas.

John was a farmer.

John married 'UNKNOWN'. 'UNKNOWN' died.

4. John SHANAHAN (Mary ) was born in probably about 3 March 1809 in probably Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened in probably 5 Mar 1809 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 9 Jan 1894 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

If John's father's name was indeed Cornelius then it is surprising John did not name his eldest son Cornelius, following the tradition at the time of naming one's elest son after the paternal grandfather. It is possible, however, that John could have had a son named Cornelius before Patrick below (born April 1842) who might have died as a child.

John married Mary WOULFE (caution: relationship to parents not verified), daughter of Maurice James WOULFE and Ellen O'DOWER/DORE, on 4 Feb 1840 in Athea, Co. Limerick. Mary was born in about late 1810s in probably Athea, Co. Limerick. She died before 9 Jan 1894 in probably Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

It is thought my Woulfe family came from the townland of Cratloe in Athea. I have been DNA-matched by Ancestry with various descendants of Richard (Dickie Ned) Woulfe (c.1824-1906) and Ellen O'Dower of Athea, the type of match suggesting that Mary is closely connected to Dickie Ned, Ellen and their children. Could Mary have been a daughter of theirs?

I have been told that one of the children of Mary above and her husband, John, may have married someone by the name of Walsh from Marble Hole in Tarbert, Co. Kerry. However, Mary and John also had a granddaughter, Mary Collins, who married a Willie Walsh from Marble Hole, so perhaps it was a granddaughter rather than a son or daughter who married a Walsh from Marble Hole.

Marriage Notes:

A transcribed version of John and Mary's marriage certificate was purchased via the Roots Ireland website, www.rootsireland.ie. Unfortunately, neither the addresses of the bride and groom nor the fathers' names are provided. We do, however, have the witnesses' names, Richard Woulfe and James White.

A separate source has told me that John and Mary "were related in the 3rd and 4th grade". This apparently means they were second cousins once removed. According to the same source John was from the Kerry diocese.

John and Mary had the following children.

  13 M i
Patrick SHANAHAN was born about 14 Apr 1842 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 16 Apr 1842 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died before 16 Mar 1851 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Patrick's baptism were James Shanahan and Ellen Shanahan.

It appears Patrick died as a child as another son of John and Mary's, born nine years later, was also named Patrick.
+ 14 F ii Mary SHANAHAN was born about 1844. She died on 21 Sep 1901.
+ 15 M iii Richard SHANAHAN was born about 1848. He died on 3 Apr 1924.
+ 16 M iv James SHANAHAN was born about 18 Aug 1849. He died on 27 Oct 1895.
  17 M v
Patrick SHANAHAN was born about 14 Mar 1851 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 16 Mar 1851 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Patrick's baptism were William Woulfe and Bridget Woulfe.

It seems Patrick never married. He lived with his brother Richard and is listed as single in both the 1901 and 1911 census returns for Richard's household. According to the returns, Patrick could not read, unlike Richard.

However, a Patrick Shanahan, aged "about 72" and a widower, died on 5 December 1925 in Kilbaha (of "probably old age"). The informant on the death certificate was a John Shanahan of Kilbaha (releationship to deceased not specified). Could our Patrick above have married between 1911 and 1925? Could the John Shanahan be our Patrick's nephew (son of Richard)?
  18 F vi
Honora SHANAHAN was born about 7 Oct 1852 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 9 Oct 1852 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

The sponsor at Honora's baptism was Bridget Woulfe.

I have not managed to find any more information on Bridget.
  19 vii
'unknown' SHANAHAN was born about 29 Apr 1854 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. 'unknown' was christened on 1 May 1854 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

On 'unknown's baptismal record, the first name is not recorded, nor are there any sponsors listed. It is possible that 'unknown' is Johanna. Although I have no evidence that John and Mary had a daughter named Johanna, a Johanna Shanahan from Kilbaha, whose father's name was John, was married in Moyvane on 14 April 1874 to a Michael Sheahan of Crohan (I have been unable to determine where exactly Crohan is located). Michael's father's name was Martin and witnesses were John Shanahan and John Sheahan.
+ 20 F viii Bridget SHANAHAN was born about 14 Jan 1857. She died on 1 Apr 1895.
+ 21 F ix Ellen (Ellie) SHANAHAN was born about 1859. She died on 15 Oct 1903.

5. Catherine SHANAHAN (caution: relationship to John not verified) (Mary ) was born about 7 Sep 1811 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 9 Sep 1811 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 15 Dec 1884 in probably Kentucky. She was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Paris, Kentucky.

Baptismal sponsors were Patrick Mulvihill and Gobnet Dillane.

Catherine married James QUINN (caution: marriage not verified) on 10 Feb 1835 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. James was born in 1798 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died on 13 May 1861 in probably Kentucky. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Paris, Kentucky.

We are not entirely certain that Catherine, daughter of Cornelius Shanahan and Mary Dillane, married James as there was another Catherine Shanahan in the area at the time who married a Patrick Buckley and who lived in Kilbaha and had a child named Julia or Juliann, baptised on 11 September 1839. However, the fact that Catherine and James had a son named Cornelius makes me think it was James who married Cornelius and Mary's daughter.

James, Catherine and their family emigrated to the United States, probably in the 1850s, where they went by the name of McQuinn. They appear to have settled in the Paris area of Kentucky.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Cornelius Shanahan and Michael Shanahan.

Catherine and James had the following children.

  22 F i
Mary MCQUINN was born about 3 Sep 1836 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 5 Sep 1836 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.
  23 F ii
Margaret MCQUINN was born about 30 Dec 1839 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 1 Jan 1840 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died before 1853.
  24 M iii
Cornelius MCQUINN was born about 11 Jan 1843 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 13 Jan 1843 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 1 Nov 1858 in probably Kentucky. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Paris, Kentucky.

Cornelius died at the age of 15.
  25 F iv
Bridget MCQUINN was born about 1845 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died on 2 Sep 1854 in probably Kentucky. She was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Paris, Kentucky.
  26 F v
Ellen MCQUINN was born about 1847 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died in probably Nicholas County, Kentucky.

Ellen lived in Nicholas County, Kentucky.

Ellen married Patrick D. SHEA. Patrick died in probably Nicholas County, Kentucky.
  27 F vi
Margaret MCQUINN was born in 1852. She died on 3 Sep 1854 in probably Kentucky. She was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Paris, Kentucky.

Margaret died at the age of two.

6. Cornelius SHANAHAN (caution: relationship to John not verified) (Mary ) was born about 17 Jul 1814 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 19 Jul 1814 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 29 May 1882 in Dooncaha, Tarbert, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I have been DNA-matched by Ancestry with great-great-grandchildren of Cornelius. The exact type of relationship between them and me has not been determined but it appears I could be their fourth cousin, which would make Cornelius above a brother of my great-great-grandfather John. However, because this is not 100% certain I have added a caution.

Cornelius's baptismal sponsors were James Shanahan and Honora Condon.

Cornelius was a farmer and publican. Although he lived in Moyvane village he died in Dooncaha, Tarbert. Had he moved there or had he been taken ill there?

Cornelius married Hanora MCMAHON about 1850. Hanora was born about 1821 in Co. Kerry. She died on 18 Jan 1908 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

They had the following children.

  28 F i
Ellen SHANAHAN was born about 3 Aug 1853 in probably Moyvane Village, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 5 Aug 1853 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 19 Jul 1881 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ellen died at the age of 27 of "ovarian disease" and tuberculosis.

Ellen married John O'CONNELL, son of Michael O'CONNELL, on 6 Jun 1878 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John was born in probably Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died.
+ 29 F ii Hanora SHANAHAN was born about 1854. She died in 1925.
+ 30 M iii Cornelius (Con) SHANAHAN was born about 31 Jul 1860. He died on 26 Jul 1920.
  31 M iv
Patrick SHANAHAN was born about 24 Jan 1862 in probably Moyvane Village, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 26 Jan 1862 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.
  32 M v
John SHANAHAN was born in probably Moyvane Village, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died.

We know of John's existence through a headstone in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane which John had erected in memory of his father and his sister Ellen who died within a year of each other (in 1882 and 1881 respectively).
  33 F vi
Catherine (Kate) SHANAHAN was born on 24 Apr 1865 in Moyvane village, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 27 Apr 1865 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Kate was 40 when she married and her husband, Johnny, was 27. They had no children and lived in Athea.

It is surprising that Kate did not marry in her home parish of Moyvane. However her address at the time of her marriage was Athea and she was working as a servant so perhaps, at the age of 40, she had settled in Athea.

Catherine married John (Johnny) SULLIVAN, son of John (Sean Tadhg) SULLIVAN and Mary LISTON, on 19 Jun 1905 in Athea, Co. Limerick. John was born about 1878 in Dirreen, Athea, Co. Limerick.
