Fourth Generation

(Continued)

111. Maurice CUNNINGHAM (Bryan (Little Bryan) D. , Daniel , Bryan ) was born about 20 May 1862 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 22 May 1862 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 25 Apr 1924 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

There is absolutely no proof available to indicate that Maurice was a son of the Bryan Cunningham who was known as "Little Bryan", but for the following reasons it is being assumed that they were father and son:

1. It is known that Maurice's father was named Bryan.

2. Maurice's son, Billy, married a Jo O'Connor who was related to him. It is thought by the family that they were third cousins, and this would make sense if Maurice were Little Bryan's son as it would make Billy and Jo third cousins once removed. It could be argued that Maurice could have been a son of the Bryan Cunningham who married Johanna Hudson, but if this were the case, then Billy and Jo would be first cousins once removed.

3. It could also be argued that Maurice's father, Bryan, was neither Little Bryan, nor Bryan who married Johanna Hudson. This is unlikely because within our original Kilbaha Cunningham family, there were only three brothers, Myles, Daniel and Timothy. Myles had a son called Bryan (who married Johanna Hudson); Daniel had a son, Bryan (Little Bryan); and Timothy never married. And given that the only Cunninghams listed in Griffith's Valuation (1850s) for Kilbaha are Myles, Daniel and Timothy, it is most likely that Maurice's father had to have been either Myles's or Daniel's son.

In the 1901 census return for the household of James Cunningham in Kilbaha North, there is a Maurice Cunningham listed as a brother of James. Maurice's occupation is given as shopkeeper. If, as we think, Maurice's mother was Catherine Danaher, then his age (34) at the time of the 1901 census does not tie in with his baptismal date which would have made him 39 at the time of the census. Sponsors at the baptism of Maurice, son of Bryan Cunningham and Catherine Danaher, were Edmond Stack and Hanora Stack.

It is known that Maurice moved to Moyvane village (from Kilbaha?) "around 1900".

Maurice's death certificate tells us he died of heart failure.

Maurice married Mary Anne FORAN, daughter of William FORAN and Catherine SHINE, on 25 Aug 1901 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Mary was born on 27 Apr 1873 in Moyvane village, Co. Kerry. She died on 25 May 1927 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Mary and her husband, Maurice, lived in the village of Newtownsandes (now known as Moyvane).

Mary died aged 53 in hospital in Listowel following an accident. She had been filling a container with petrol at her home in Moyvane when a spark from the fire ignited the petrol, causing her serious burns to her face and hands. She died some hours later in hospital in Listowel.

Marriage Notes:

Maurice CUNNINGHAM was born on 14 Sep 1915 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane) village, Co. Kerry. He died on 1 Oct 1915 in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry.

Maurice died at the age of two weeks of "either debility from birth or compression of brain".
+ 466 F xi Maud CUNNINGHAM was born on 2 Apr 1918. She died on 27 Feb 1974.

112. James (Jim) CUNNINGHAM (Bryan (Little Bryan) D. , Daniel , Bryan ) was born about 1863 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 27 May 1928 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Most of the information below on James's wife and family comes from the 1901 census return for the household of a James Cunningham of Kilbaha North who I am fairly sure is our James above. For one thing, the census indicates that James was born about 1862, around the time that our James would have been born. Secondly, it shows that James' eldest son's name is Bryan, probably following the practice at the time of naming the first-born son after his paternal grandfather.

James married Johanna (Hannie, Hannah) STACK, daughter of Edmund STACK and Mary CARROLL, on 20 Nov 1897 in Listowel registration district, Co. Kerry. Johanna was born on 7 Mar 1874 in Beale, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. She died on 16 Apr 1963 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

According to the 1911 census, Hannie and her husband, James, had been married for 13 years; they had had five children born alive, all five of whom were still living by 1911.

They had the following children.

  467 M i
Bryan (Ben) CUNNINGHAM was born on 7 Oct 1898 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 9 Oct 1898 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 23 Dec 1944 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ben's baptismal sponsors were John Keily and Mary Keily.

He is listed as Bernard in the 1911 census (the names are synonymous).

Ben died of tuberculosis aged 46.
  468 M ii
Edward (Ned) CUNNINGHAM was born on 1 Mar 1900 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 3 Mar 1900 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 21 Jul 1959 in Tullamore, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Ned's baptismal sponsors were Maurice Cunningham and Mary Stack.

Edward married Ann (Annie) GALVIN, daughter of Mortimer GALVIN, on 4 Feb 1928 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. Ann was born in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She died after 21 Jul 1959.

Annie was from Liscullane, Lixnaw.
  469 F iii
Catherine CUNNINGHAM was born on 25 Mar 1901 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 28 Mar 1901 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.

Catherine's baptismal sponsors were Maurice Cunningham and Elizabeth Stack.

Catherine married Daniel DANAHER, son of James DANAHER, on 5 Feb 1923 in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. Daniel died.
+ 470 F iv Mary CUNNINGHAM was born about 10 May 1904. She died.
+ 471 M v John (Jack) Patrick CUNNINGHAM was born on 17 Mar 1909. He died on 19 Nov 1990.
  472 M vi
James CUNNINGHAM was born on 18 Jul 1915 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 18 Dec 1940 in County Infirmary, Limerick. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

According to his death record, James died at the age of 25 of "perforation of stomach, 11 days, peritonitis". His address is given as Knockaboula, Foynes, Co. Limerick and his occupation was "farmer's son".

130. Johanna HAYES (Bridget CUNNINGHAM , Daniel , Bryan ) was born about 28 Apr 1857 in Dirreen, Athea, Co. Limerick. She was christened on 1 May 1857 in St. Bartholomew's Church, Athea, Co. Limerick. She died on 13 Aug 1933 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in probably Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Johanna's baptismal sponsors were John Connor and Catherine Cunningham.

It is not surprising that Johanna married William as they were near neighbours. Dirreen, although in a different county, is right next to William's home townland of Kilbaha; in fact the Hudson farm shared a boundary with part of the Hayes farm in Dirreen.

As Johanna died in Kilbaha it would appear she returned to live there sometime after William's death five years earlier (they had farmed in Kibaha for many years before moving to Lacca East in Kilmorna around 1920). The informant on her death record was her son Ned who appears to have inherited the old Kilbaha farm so it may have been there that Johanna died. Her death record also tells us she died of "probably heart failure following influenza".

I am wondering if Johanna was related to the Hayes family of Templeathea (also in Athea, the parish in which Johanna's home townland of Dirreen is located) because at least two members of the Templeathea Hayes family married members of the family of Johanna's husband, William Hudson: Tom Hayes married William's sister Johanna Hudson in 1881, and about 1903 Tom's second cousin James Hayes married Bridget Hudson, daughter of  William Hudson and Johanna Hayes (and niece of Johanna Hudson). My hunch is that the two Hayes families were indeed related but I have no proof. If anyone has any further information on the family of Johanna Hayes above, I would be very grateful if you would email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com.

Johanna married William HUDSON, son of Edward (Edmond) HUDSON and Hanora (Nora) CONNOR, on 7 Jul 1878 in St. Bartholomew's Church, Athea, Co. Limerick. William was born about 23 May 1844 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 24 May 1844. He died on 2 May 1928 in Lacca East, Kilmorna, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I am very grateful to Tom Moloney of Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry for much of the information you see below on the family of William and his wife, Johanna.

Sponsors at William's baptism were William Connor and John Connnor.

William and Johanna remained on the Hudson family farm in Kilbaha until about 1920 when they moved to Lacca East, Kilmorna, Co. Kerry. They had purchased a 65-acre farm there on 29 March 1919 (for £2,410) from a family by the name of Walsh. William and Johanna's eldest son, Ned, appears to have taken over the Kilbaha farm around this time, while William and Johanna's only other surviving son, Dick, would later inherit the farm in Lacca East.

Apparently William was a striking-looking man with a long white beard.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were John Shanahan and Kate Ahern.

Johanna and William had the following children.

  473 F i
Mary Ann HUDSON was born about 10 Sep 1878 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 12 Sep 1878 in Athea, Co. Limerick. She died on 27 Mar 1959 in Coilagurteen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Mary Ann's baptism were James Cunningham and Mary Cunningham. Although Mary Ann was born in Kilbaha she was baptised in Athea, Co. Limerick, following the tradition at the time of baptising the first-born child in the mother's home parish.

Mary Ann and her husband, John, lived in Coilagurteen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Note that Coilagurteen is not an actual townland but comprises part of the townland of Carhooearagh (also spelled Carrueragh) and perhaps part of the townland of Kylebwee (also spelled Coilbee). The Doody farm was situated in the Carhooeragh area of Coilagurteen.

It appears that Mary Ann and her husband, John, did not have any children because, in the early 1920s, they gave over their farm to Mary Ann's youngest sister Ellen Broderick (20 years Mary Ann's junior) and Ellen's husband, Paddy, apparently in return for being looked after for the remainder of their lives. The owner's name was not changed by the Valuation Office from John Doody to Patrick Broderick until 1927 but it is possible the actual transfer of ownership had occurred some years earlier.

Mary married John DOODY, son of Jeremiah DOODY and Bridget SCANLON, on 12 Feb 1903 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John was born about 4 Jun 1871 in Coilagurteen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 6 Jun 1871 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 27 Jan 1945 in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

John and Mary farmed in Coilagurteen, Moyvane.

John died in the District Hospital in Listowel of acute cardiac failure.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Edmund Hudson and Ann Doody.

+ 474 F ii Hanora (Nora) HUDSON was born on 9 Dec 1879. She died on 21 Jun 1958.
+ 475 M iii Edmond (Ned) HUDSON was born on 20 Mar 1881. He died on 23 Dec 1969.
  476 M iv
John HUDSON was born on 26 Oct 1882 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened about 28 Oct 1882 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 19 Mar 1883 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in probably Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John's baptismal sponsors were James Cunningham and Mary Cunningham.
+ 477 F v Bridget HUDSON was born on 21 Nov 1883. She died on 28 Apr 1928.
+ 478 F vi Margaret (Mag) HUDSON was born on 27 Nov 1885. She died on 7 Apr 1966.
  479 M vii
William HUDSON was born on 19 Apr 1887 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 31 Mar 1916 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

According to his death certificate William died of "probably tuberculosis of the lung" from which he had been suffering for about 18 months. The certificate also tells us that William was an "ex-policeman". He was only 28 years old when he died.

Based on the above information Royal Irish Constabulary records were checked and it appears that William joined the force in 1906 (aged about 20).
  480 M viii
Thomas HUDSON was born on 6 Sep 1888 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 10 Mar 1913 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

According to his death certificate Thomas died of "probably tuberculosis of the lungs". He was only 24 years of age.
+ 481 M ix Richard (Dick) HUDSON was born on 8 Apr 1891. He died on 7 Jan 1980.
+ 482 F x Johanna (Hannie) HUDSON was born on 11 Jan 1895. She died on 7 Nov 1962.
+ 483 F xi Ellen "Nell Broder" HUDSON was born on 2 Jun 1898. She died on 15 Aug 1976.

132. Bridget HARRINGTON (Johanna CUNNINGHAM , Daniel , Bryan ) was born about 8 Jan 1853 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 10 Jan 1853 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.

The sponsor at Bridget's baptism was Denis Harrington.

Bridget married John O'CONNELL, son of 'unknown' O'CONNELL, on 25 Feb 1872 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John was born in 1847 in Lahardane, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. He died on 3 Jun 1930 in Melbourne.

John emigrated to Australia in late 1875, settling in Melbourne, and I am told his wife, Bridget, did not accompany him. However, an obituary of Bridget's sister Ellie (1931) mentions a sister, Mrs. O'Connell, of Australia.

~According to family lore John was "a bit of a bounder". He had the bailiffs after him when he left Ireland and it appears he abandoned Bridget. It is believed that he never married Sarah Bowden with whom he had two children in Australia.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were James Morgan and Michael Hanrahan.

Bridget and John had the following children.

  484 M i
John O'CONNELL was born in Lahardane, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. He died.
  485 M ii
James O'CONNELL was born on 30 Jul 1874 in Lahardane, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 3 Aug 1874 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. He died before Jun 1930.
  486 M iii
Michael O'CONNELL (caution: not verified) was born on 5 Jul 1875 in Lahardane, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 12 Jul 1875 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.

Michael's mother's name appears as Mina (rather than the expected Bridget) Harrington on his baptismal record on www.irishgenealogy.ie, hence the caution.

It is possible that Michael died as a child as his father had another son (with Sarah Bawden) in 1890 who was named Michael.

134. Johanna HARRINGTON (Johanna CUNNINGHAM , Daniel , Bryan ) was born about 1855 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Johanna married Martin SHEEHY, son of Patrick SHEEHY, on 19 Apr 1887 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. Martin was born about 1860 in probably Rathea, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry.

They had the following children.

  487 M i
Patrick (Pat) SHEEHY was born about 1 Mar 1888 in Rathea, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 3 Mar 1888 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry.
  488 F ii
Margaret (Madge) Mary SHEEHY was born about 7 Mar 1889 in Rathea, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 9 Mar 1889 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She died.
  489 F iii
Johanna (Hannie) Mary SHEEHY was born about 31 May 1891 in Rathea, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 2 Jun 1891 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. She died.
  490 F iv

  491 M v
James (Jim) SHEEHY was born on 15 May 1901 in Rathea, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 16 May 1901 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. He died.

135. Honora (Nora) HARRINGTON (Johanna CUNNINGHAM , Daniel , Bryan ) was born about 13 Nov 1856 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 15 Nov 1856 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in between 31 Mar 1901 and 2 Apr 1911 in probably Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Hanora's baptism were William Harrington and Ellen Cunningham.

Honora married Michael J. O'CONNOR, son of Michael O'CONNOR and Mary GRANT, on 25 Sep 1887 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Michael was born about 1845 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. He died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Michael may have lived in the United States for a time because in the 1911 census, under 'County of Birth', Michael wrote "Born in Ireland, 4 in America". According to the 1901 census Michael was running a public house and living in Church St., Listowel, and by 1911 he was working as a shoemaker and the family was living in the Square, Listowel.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Martin Sheehy and Mary Harrington.

Honora and Michael had the following children.

According to the 1911 census, James and Mary had been married for 14 years and had six children born alive, all of whom were alive at the time of the census.

Mary died of "Probably neuritis and rheumatism".

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Martin Sheehy and James Harrington.

James and Mary had the following children.

  508 M i
James (Sonny) HARRINGTON was born on 25 Jul 1898 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 18 Jan 1980 in Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Sonny lived in the old Harrington family home in Kilbaha for many years before moving to Bridge Road in Listowel. It is thought he never married.

  509 M ii
Patrick HARRINGTON was born on 25 Jul 1899 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died before 18 Jan 1980 in probably U.S..

Patrick emigrated to the United States in 1922. According to Ellis Island records he was joining a cousin, James Nolan, in Brooklyn, New York. Patrick's younger brother Matthew joined Patrick in New York a year later.
+ 510 F iii Hanora (Hannah) HARRINGTON was born about 1900. She died on 17 Apr 1992.
  511 M iv
John HARRINGTON was born on 21 Apr 1902 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 26 Apr 1902 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died before 18 Jan 1980.
  512 M v
Matthew HARRINGTON was born on 21 Aug 1904 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in possibly 5 Nov 1973.

From a search of Ellis Island records it appears that Matthew emigrated to the United States in 1923. However, Matthew's father's name on the ship manisfest is given as Thomas Harrington (of Kilbaha) rather than James Harrington. Nevertheless, given the Kilbaha connection and the fact that both our Matthew and the Matthew from the Ellis Island record were 19 years of age and had a brother named Patrick who had already emigrated to the States (the Ellis Island record tells us that Matthew was joining his brother Patrick of 154 East 97th St. in New York), it is possible that it was our Matthew above who emigrated to the United States in 1923.

A Matthew Harrington of Kilbaha, who died in Listowel District Hospital on 5 November 1973 aged 69, is buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane. If this is our Matthew above then it appears he returned from the U.S. According to Ahavoher burial records, Matthew was single and died of Parkinsons Disease.

I had been told of a Matthew Harrington of Kilbaha who married a Jane (Janie) Egan, who was born on 6 February 1904 to John Egan and Catherine McMahon from Tarmons, Tarbert, Co. Kerry and who lived in Kilbaha. However, from the Irish Genealogy website it appears that Janie married a James Harrington on 17 March 1943 in Listowel registration district. Unfortunately no image is available for this marriage record so we have no further details as to which Harrington family James belonged. Further information on Janie: she lived in Kilbaha and died on 27 February 1973 aged 69. She is buried in Ahavoher Cemetery.
  513 M vi
Daniel HARRINGTON was born on 21 Jun 1907 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 27 Jun 1907 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in possibly bebore 18 Jan 1980 in possibly Rockaway, Queens, New York. He was buried in St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens, New York.

Daniel emigrated to the United States in 1925 and settledd in New York.

In 1940 he was working as a shipping clerk at a paper mill (according to the 1940 census), and (according to a Morrissey family source) he became completely deaf following service in world War II during which he was subjected to the noise of artillery fire.

Daniel and his wife, Joan, had no children.

Daniel married Johanna (Hannah, Joan) MORRISSEY, daughter of 'unknown' MORRISSEY and Mary O'CONNOR, on 11 Dec 1933 in New York. Johanna was born on 10 Jun 1908 in Knocknacurra, Lyreacompane or Upper Ballymacelligott, Co. Kerry. She died on 7 Dec 1987 in Rockaway Park, Queens, New York City. She was buried in St. John's Cemetery, Middle Village, Queens, New York City.

We have Joan's place of birth from a newspaper obituary which tells us she was "a native of Knocknacurra, Lyreacompane or Upper Ballymacelligott."

Joan worked in Warrington, Cheshire for a time before emigrating to the United States in the late 1920s. She worked initially for Stern Brothers in New York before joining the staff of R. H. Macy & Co. where she worked for many years until her retirement. According to the 1940 U.S. census, Joan was a sales lady at a department store (this was presumably Macy's). She and her husband, Daniel, were living at the time at 25 Broadway Terrace, New York City.

Joan died at her residence in Rockaway Park. She and Daniel had lived in the Rockaways since the late 1940s.

Ellen's baptismal sponsors were Edmund Stack and Mary Stack.

Ellie and her family lived on Church St., Listowel, Co. Kerry where they ran a grocery business. The 1911 census tells us Ellie (by then widowed) had had eight children born alive, five of whom were still alive at the time of the census.

Patrick died of gastroenteritis aged 43.

Note: I have sometimes seen Mullally spelled as Mullaly.

Michael ran the family farm in Tullamore, Shronowen.

They had the following children.

+ 525 M i Patrick (Pattie) A. MULVIHILL was born about 26 Feb 1887. He died on 9 Aug 1951.
  526 M ii
Michael M. MULVIHILL was born about 23 Sep 1888 in Shronowen, Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 25 Sep 1888 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. He died before 18 Feb 1972 in probably Kansas. He was buried in St. Martin's Cemetery, Seguin, Kansas.

Michael, like his brother Daniel, was a priest, ministering in the Concordia diocese (which later became the diocese of Salina) of Kansas. Around 1913 he served briefly as a pastor in St. Patrick's parish in Lincoln County, Kansas, where his brother Daniel would later serve as a pastor. At the time of the death of his brother Denis in 1918, Michael was serving in Goodland, Kansas; in 1935 he appears to have been ministering in Salina, Kansas; and in 1952 he was pastor in Seguin, Kansas.
+ 527 M iii Edmond (Ned) MULVIHILL was born about 26 Jan 1890. He died on 18 Feb 1972.

Denis was only 27 years of age when he died of pneumonia.
  529 M v
John MULVIHILL was born about 4 Dec 1892 in Shronowen, Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 6 Dec 1892 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.
  530 F vi
Mary Ann (Sr. Anne Joseph) MULVIHILL was born about 1 Nov 1894 in Shronowen, Listowel, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 3 Nov 1894 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. She died in 1992 in St. Mary's Convent, Concordia, Kansas. She was buried in Nazareth Cemetery, Concordia, Kansas.

Mary Ann went to Kansas in 1916 to work as housekeeper to her brother Michael who was a priest in Goodland. She later joined the order of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Concordia, Kansas, becoming Sr. Anne Joseph. It is known that around the 1940s or 1950s Sr. Anne Joseph was Superior of the High School in Tipton, Kansas. By 1969 she was serving at St. Joseph's Hospital (run by her order) in Belvidere, Illinois. She died in 1992 at the age of 97.
  531 M vii
Daniel (Dan) B. MULVIHILL was born about 21 Jul 1896 in Shronowen, Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 23 Jul 1896 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. He died after 18 Feb 1972 in probably New Mexico. He was buried in probably St. Martin's Cemetery, Seguin, Kansas.

Dan, who seems to have been also known as Donal, left school early and worked in Dublin for a time as a ralway clerk. In 1916, at the age of about 20 he returned to Kerry to complete his schooling, attending St. Michael's College  in Listowel. He then studied for the priesthood at All Hallows College in Dublin and in 1927 was ordained for the diocese of Concordia, Kansas (which became the diocese of Salina in 1944). From 1930 until 1943 he was pastor (parish priest) in St. Patrick's parish in Lincoln County, Kansas, and in 1951 he was pastor in Plainville, Kansas. By 1952 he was pastor at the Church of St. John the Baptist in Clyde, Kansas and by 1969 Dan was living in a home for retired priests in Villa Louis Martin, Jemez Springs, New Mexico.

It is believed that Dan, his brother Fr. Michael and their sister, Sr. Anne Joseph, went to Concordia because they had a distant cousin, John Francis Cunningham, who was Bishop of Concordia (from 1898 until his death in 1919). However we do not know how exactly they were related to the bishop.

Bishop Cunningham also had two other distant cousins (apparently first cousins twice removed) who joined him in Concordia: Johanna (Sr. Mary Ellen) Cunningham and her sister Margaret (Sr. Mary Estelle) joined the Sisters of St. Joseph in Concordia after their arrival in the United States in 1915. Dan, Fr. Michael and Sr. Anne Joseph seem to have been related to Johanna and Margaret through their (the Mulvihills') grandmother Norrie Cunningham who appears to have been a member of Johanna and Margaret's extended family, although the exact nature of the connection has not been determined. Any information that would help fill in the gaps would be much appreciated. Please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com.
+ 532 M viii Jeremiah MULVIHILL was born about 19 Feb 1898. He died on 23 Aug 1968.

146. Denis (Din) MULVIHILL (Hanora (Norrie) CUNNINGHAM , Daniel , Bryan ) was born on 14 Jan 1863 in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 29 Aug 1919 in Chicago. He was buried on 1 Sep 1919 in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois.

According to family sources Din and his wife, Johanna, may have eloped and emigrated to the United States shortly after their marriage. They settled in Chicago where Din worked as a labourer, according to census information and his death record. The death record also tells us he was born on 14 January 1863 which differs from his date of birth of 22 February 1856 from church records on the Irish Genealogy website.

A marriage record for a Denis Mulvihill (father's name Michael) and a MARY Hanrahan (father's name John), both from Gortdromasillihy, has been located in the church records section of the Irish Genealogy website, www.irishgenealogy.ie. They were married in Moyvane on 30 April 1884 with Myles Kearney and Patrick Hanrahan as witnesses. I am wondering if this could refer to our Din above, despite the difference between the brides' first names. And in the civil records section of the same website, a marriage record was located for a Denis Mulvihill and a JOHANNA Hanrahan who were married exactly a year later, on 30 April 1885, in the Listowel registration district. My feeling is that both of these records relate to our Din and Johanna, who appear to have been married on 30 April of either 1884 or 1885.

Denis married Johanna HANRAHAN, daughter of John HANRAHAN and Mary MULVIHILL, on 30 Apr 1885 in Murhur, Co. Kerry. Johanna was born about 20 Dec 1861 in The Hill, Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 22 Dec 1861 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 7 Jul 1926 in Chicago. She was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois.

A baptismal record on the Irish Genealogy website for a Johanna Hanrahan, baptised on 22 December 1861, appears to be that of Johanna above. However, Johanna's death certificate has her date of birth as 22 December 1869. I am inclined to think that her year of birth is more likely to have been the former.

The 1920 U.S. census shows Johanna, by now widowed, living with her son, Daniel, and a 24-year-old nephew named John Mulvihill.

They had the following children.

  533 M i
John MULVIHILL was born in possibly Illinois. He died before 29 Aug 1919.
  534 M ii
Michael MULVIHILL was born in possibly Illinois. He died before 29 Aug 1919.
  535 F iii
Mary (Mae) MULVIHILL was born about 1889 in Illinois. She died before Jul 1957.

The 1910 U.S. census tells us that 20-year-old Mae was a stenographer in the publishing industry.

Mary married George Hugo BEGEHR on 28 Dec 1918 in Illinois. George was born in 1889 in Illinois. He died on 10 Nov 1969 in Illinois.

Both of George's parents were born in Germany.
  536 M iv
Daniel J. MULVIHILL was born about 1891 in Illinois. He died in 1957.

The 1910 U.S. census tells us that 18-year-old Daniel was a teamster in the pop wagon industry. I am told Daniel "died very wealthy". According to his death notice in the Chicago Daily News of 24 April 1957, he was a cousin of "Msgr. Michael [Mulvihill], Daniel Mulvihill , Sr. Anne Joseph [Mulvihill] of Kansas, Helen Liston, Mrs. John Murphy, Mrs. James Woods and Frank J. Thornton". I know how the three Mulvihill cousins (who were siblings) and Frank Thornton are related to Daniel but I have not come across  Helen Liston, Mrs. John Murphy or Mrs. James Woods, although I imagine all three lived in the Chicago area.
