Descendants of Bryan CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Third Generation

(Continued)

23. Hanora (Norrie) CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) (Daniel , Bryan ) was born about 1826. She died on 10 Aug 1906 in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Norrie and her husband, Mick, lived in Gortdromasillihy, Newtownsandes (now known as Moyvane).

A number of family trees on the Ancestry website show Norrie as being a daughter of Dan Cunningham and Hanora Enright. While it seems likely she was indeed their daughter, this has not been verified. However, I have been DNA-matched to Purtill descendants of Norrie's, the type of match indicating that she was a daughter of Dan and Hanora's. While not proving this exact connection, it certainly supports it.

It seems Norrie was a sister of Nance Cunningham, first wife of Con Mulvihill who was apparently a brother of Norrie's husband, Mick, i.e., two Mulvihill brothers married two Cunningham sisters. However, further research needs to be carried out to verify this.

There is cause for confusion in that Dan's brother Myles (my great-great-great-grandfather) also had daughters named Norrie and Nance, but it appars they were the Norrie and Nance who married Jim Thornton and Pat O'Connor respectively. To add to the confusion, Dan's son Bryan also appears to have had daughters named Norrie and Nance.

Hanora married Michael (Mick) MULVIHILL (caution: relationship to siblings not verified), son of Daniel MULVIHILL and Johanna MCMAHON, about 1853. Michael was born about 1824. He died on 29 Jan 1907 in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I am told that Mick was from Shronowen, Listowel, Co. Kerry. Apparently he had a brother named Con who married Nance Cunningham who a sister of Mick's wife, Norrie, i.e., two Mulvihill brothers married two Cunningham sisters. However, further research needs to be carried out to verify that Michael was a brother of Con, hence the caution.

They had the following children.

  142 M i
Daniel MULVIHILL was born in 1854 in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in between 1854 and 1858.

Daniel must have died as a child as another son born to his parents in 1858 was also named Daniel.
+ 143 M ii Daniel (Dan) M. MULVIHILL was born in 1858. He died on 29 Jun 1935.
+ 144 F iii Hanora (Nora) MULVIHILL was born about 17 Mar 1857. She died on 30 Jan 1951.
  145 F iv
Mary MULVIHILL was born in 1860 in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Mary may have died young as family sources make no mention of her.
+ 146 M v Denis (Din) MULVIHILL was born on 14 Jan 1863. He died on 29 Aug 1919.
+ 147 M vi Cornelius (Con) MULVIHILL was born in 1863. He died on 20 Oct 1938.
+ 148 F vii Anne (Annie) MULVIHILL was born about 26 Aug 1864. She died on 9 Feb 1910.
  149 M viii
Michael MULVIHILL died.
  150 F ix
Johanna MULVIHILL was born in 1853 in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 23 Nov 1912 in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Johanna never married. She died at the home of her nephew Danny (Danny Dan Mick) Mulvihill, son of her brother Dan.

24. Ann (Nance) CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) (Daniel , Bryan ) died before 1862.

A number of family trees on the Ancestry website show Nance as being a daughter of Daniel Cunningham and Hanora Enright. While it seems likely she was indeed their daughter, this has not been verified.

According to some sources Nance's name may actually have been Nora. However, the baptismal records of her children give their mother's name as Ann. Also, it appears that she had a sister named Honora (from which Nora is derived). This sister, who was known as Norrie, was the wife of Michael Mulvihill who was apparently a brother of Nance's husband, Con, i.e., two Mulvihill brothers married two Cunningham sisters. However, further research needs to be carried out to verify this.

Nance died when her children were very young. Con remarried not long afterwards.

Ann married Cornelius (Con) MULVIHILL, son of Daniel MULVIHILL and Johanna MCMAHON. Cornelius was born about 1823. He died in possibly 15 Nov 1908 in Church St., Listowel, Co. Kerry.

At the time of his marriage to Biddie Dineen (his second wife), Cornelius was living in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Apparently he subsequently inherited the family's Clounbrane farm in Moyvane (one of the three farms originally owned by Con's father).

I am told that Con had a brother named Michael who married Norrie Cunningham who was a sister of Con's first wife, Nance, i.e., two Mulvihill brothers married two Cunningham sisters. However, further research needs to be carried out to verify this.

I believe the Cornelius Mulvihill who died at Church St., Listowel, Co. Kerry on 15 November 1908 aged 85 is Con above as the informant on his death record was a Tim Dineen of Glenalappa, Moyvane, and Con's wife was Bridget Dineen from Glenalappa. Con's (approximate) birth date has been calculated from the death record.

They had the following children.

27. Bryan Patrick CUNNINGHAM (John , Bryan ) was born on 20 Dec 1828 in Co. Limerick. He died on 29 Dec 1910 in 1630 Liberty, Kansas City, Missouri. He was buried in Mount St. Mary's Cemetery, Kansas City.

Bryan lived in Mountcoal, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry prior to emigrating to the United States in 1860. Bryan lived with his young family in Atchison, Kansas initially before settling in Kansas City, Missouri in 1867. According to 'Kansas City, Missouri: its history and its people 1808-1908, Volume 3' (1908) by Carrie Westlake Whitney, "In 1879 he purchased one hundred and sixty-two and a half feet fronting on Liberty at the corner of Seventeenth Street, erected here a hotel [this was the Shields Hotel] and in 1884 built five cottage homes on the balance of his land. He has since continued in the hotel business".

!According to an article in The Kerryman newspaper of 30 October 1915 on Bryan's brother Bishop John Cunningham of Concordia, Bryan was "one-time Mayor of Kansas".

In Bryan's will, dated 11 November 1907, when he had estimated the value of his property to be $42,000, he left $10,000 each to Ellen, Maggie, Anna and Bernard; and, 'as they had already been provided for', he left just $10 each to his other two surviving children, Thomas and Catherine. $1,000 was left to each of two grandchildren, and a final $1,000 was to be allocated for a monument for his wife and himself. The aforementioned Ellen, Maggie, Anna and Bernard, who appear never to have married, lived in their parents' hotel and were all still in residence at the time of the death of Bishop John Francis Cunningham, their uncle, in 1919.

Note: Bryan is listed as Patrick in some U.S. censuses.

Bryan married Margaret SCANLON, daughter of John SCANLON, on 1 Jan 1857 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Margaret was born about 1838 in probably Tarbert, Co. Kerry. She died on 8 Nov 1893 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Shortly after his ordination he travelled from Louvain to Kerry to visit his grandfather, John Cunningham who appears to have been living at the time with relatives John and Bessie Troy in Listowel. On his arrival in Listowel he became seriously ill and died about two weeks later of tuberculosis, aged just 26, at John and Bessie's home. It is not known how exactly the Troys were connected to John.
