Descendants of 'unknown' CUNNINGHAM (to contribute information, please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com)

Third Generation

6. Bryan CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born in 1822 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died on 7 Jul 1901 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

One would have expected that the name Myles would have been given to Bryan's first-born son, following the tradition at the time of naming the eldest son after the child's paternal grandfather. I think it likely that Bryan did have a first-born son called Myles who must have died young.

Bryan's death certificate gives his cause of death as "debility from old age". His son Richie was present at his death.

Bryan married Johanna HUDSON, daughter of Richard HUDSON and Margaret FINUCANE, in 1847 in Gortmore House, Strand St., Tralee, Co. Kerry. Johanna was born about 24 Nov 1820 in probably Trieneragh, Duagh, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 26 Nov 1820 in Duagh, Co. Kerry. She died on 1 Dec 1897 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Johanna's mother's name appears as Mary (rather than Margaret) on her baptismal record (as provided on www.irishgenealogy.ie).

It is possible that Johanna and her family were living in Gortmore House (the old Hudson family home and now the Bon Secours Hospital) on Strand Street in Tralee at the time of her marriage in 1847 as she and Bryan were married there. It was common practice at the time to marry in the bride's home; after 1850 it became mandatory to marry in a church.

According to Tom Sheehan of Kilbaha, one of her great-grandnephews, Johanna was remembered as "a very tall and strong lady who could carry a heavy sack of meal up a hill". She and Bryan may have had more children than those listed below.

They had the following children.

+ 32 M i John CUNNINGHAM was born about 1851. He died on 1 Jan 1930.
+ 33 M ii Richard (Richie Bryan) CUNNINGHAM was born about 2 Jun 1852. He died on 24 Dec 1926.
+ 34 F iii Johanna CUNNINGHAM was born about 17 Jun 1854. She died on 12 Dec 1927.
  35 M iv
James CUNNINGHAM was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died.

Unfortunately nothing is known of James. There is a 1901 census return for the household of a James Cunningham in Kilbaha North, but it is probable that this relates to James's second cousin, James, who was a son of 'Little Bryan' Cunningham. Both Jameses had sisters named Margaret, and a Maggie Cunningham is listed in the census return as a sister to the head of the household, but the sister of the above James was long married by 1901 and is listed as Margaret Hanrahan in the return for her own family's household elsewhere in Kilbaha.
+ 36 M v Edward CUNNINGHAM was born about 15 Nov 1856. He died on 11 Jan 1924.
+ 37 F vi Margaret CUNNINGHAM was born about 1 Oct 1858. She died in 1918.

7. Ellen CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born about 26 Apr 1825 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 28 Apr 1825 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 26 May 1883 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ellen died aged 58 of "internal strangulation".

Ellen married Daniel (Dan) KEARNEY about 1850. Daniel was born about 1813 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 7 Nov 1885 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

It is possible that Dan's parents were Daniel Kearney and Mary Enright as a baptismal record has been found on www.irishgenealogy.ie for a Daniel Cearney (sic) of Kilbeaha (sic) who was baptised on 1 March 1812. It is also possible that Dan was the Daniel Kearney of Kilbaha North as listed in Griffith's Valuation, carried out for the Kilbaha area in 1853. Daniel is the only Kearney listed for the whole of Kilbaha (North, South, West and Middle).

I have located a marriage record on www.irishgenealogy.ie for a Daniel Kearney and a Honora Cunningham who was from Kilbaha. The marriage took place on 8 February 1842. It probably doesn't relate to our Daniel and Ellen but it is woth noting in case there was a transcription error. Witnesses to this marriage were Miles Cunningham and Thomas Mulvihill.

They had the following children.

+ 38 F i Mary KEARNEY was born about 1845. She died on 22 Oct 1917.
+ 39 M ii Patrick (Pat) KEARNEY was born about 31 Jan 1851. He died on 23 Apr 1917.
+ 40 F iii Margaret KEARNEY was born about 17 Mar 1853. She died after 22 Oct 1917.
+ 41 M iv Myles KEARNEY was born about 2 Aug 1855. He died on 10 Jan 1922.
  42 M v
Daniel (Dan) KEARNEY was born about 2 Aug 1855 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 4 Aug 1855 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died after 22 Oct 1917.

Sponsors at Dan's baptism were James Thornton and Mary Mulvihill.

A Daniel Kearney, a 71-year-old married man, died in Kilbaha on 19 January 1920. The informant on the death certificate was a Daniel Kearney of Kilbaha but his relationship to the deceased is not specified. Was the Daniel who died on 19 January 1920 our Daniel above?

Daniel married Ellen SLATTERY, daughter of Thomas SLATTERY, on 23 Feb 1895 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. Ellen was born about 1865 in Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Ellen was living in Bedford, Listowel prior to her marriage.

An Ellen Kearney, a "farmer's widow", died in Kilbaha on 13 February 1932 aged 87. Was this Ellen above? The informant on the death certificate was a Daniel Kearney of Kilbaha but his relationship to Ellen is not specified.
  43 F vi
Honora KEARNEY (caution: not verified) was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I am not completely certain that Daniel and Ellen Kearney had a daughter named Honora, hence the caution. However, a Honora Kearney, daughter of a Daniel Kearney of Kilbaha married a Denis Mullane in Moyvane in 1875. Honora is described on the marriage certificate as a minor, which may mean she was under the age of 18 at the time.

Honora married Denis MULLANE, son of Denis MULLANE, on 17 Feb 1876 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Denis was born in probably Athea, Co. Limerick. He died.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Maurice Scanlon and Michael Hanrahan.

  44 F vii
Ellen KEARNEY was born about 22 Jun 1860 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 24 Jun 1860 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in probably 7 Dec 1884 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ellen's baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Mulvihill and Honora Healy.

Ellen may have died young as a death certificate has been found for an Ellie Kearney who was single and who died in Kilbaha of heart disease on 7 December 1884 aged 22. Our Ellen would actually have been 24 at this time but ages given on death certificates at that time were often just approximations. The informant on Ellie's death certificate Myles Kearney but his relationship to Ellie is not provided. Ellie did have a brother named Myles so I think it likely that Ellie is our Ellie above.
+ 45 M viii Michael (Mike) KEARNEY was born about 12 Feb 1863. He died on 14 Feb 1931.
+ 46 F ix Johanna (Joan) KEARNEY was born about 4 Apr 1865. She died after 29 Jun 1935.

8. Hanora (Norrie) CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born about 1826 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died after 31 Mar 1901 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Hanora married James (Jim) THORNTON on 10 Feb 1844 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. James died before 27 Feb 1900 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

There is a James Thornton listed in Griffith's Valuation (1848-1864) who occupied land in Kilbaha Middle in the parish of Murher (Moyvane). This James is the only Thornton listed for the entire barony of Iraghticonnor, of which Murher is a part, which suggests that this James is our Jim above.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were James Cunningham and James Connor.

Hanora and James had the following children.

+ 47 F i Johanna THORNTON was born about 1846. She died after 2 Apr 1911.
  48 F ii
Elizabeth THORNTON was born about 1846 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.

Elizabeth married 'unknown' BROSNAN, son of John BROSNAN, on 15 Feb 1870 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. 'unknown' was born in probably Irremore, Listowel, Co. Kerry. He died.

'Unknown's first name is very difficult to read in the Moyvane parish marriage register but it looks like (the Latin) "Domilius", or it could possibly be Cornelius. I have also seen his surname spelled Brosnahan.

Marriage Notes:

James Thornton of Kilbaha witnessed the marriage.

There is a note in the parish register alongside the marriage record for Elizabeth and John that reads "cosanguinitas in (what looks like) 3º et 3º" which means they were related but I am unsure as to the meaning of "3º et 3º". I think this might mean they were second cousins (1º meaning siblings, 2º meaning first cousins, etc.)?

+ 49 F iii Margaret THORNTON was born about 1848. She died on 22 Jul 1926.
  50 M iv
John (Jack) THORNTON was born about 30 Jun 1852 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 2 Jul 1852 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

The sponsor at Jack's baptism was James Harrington.

I have been told by one family source that Jack lived in Kilbaha and never married, and by another that he was a priest in England.
+ 51 F v Catherine (Kate) THORNTON was born about 1853. She died in between 31 Mar 1901 and 2 Apr 1911.
+ 52 M vi Myles THORNTON was born about 25 Nov 1856. He died on 7 Apr 1930.
  53 F vii
Hanora (Nonie) THORNTON was born about 27 Jun 1859 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 29 Jun 1859 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died after 2 Apr 1911.

Sponsors at Nano's baptism were Thomas Relihan and Mary Kearney. Her date of baptism doesn't tie in with her age as given in the 1911 census (44) but ages given in census returns are quite unreliable as people like to shave a few years off their real age or, as was common in days gone by, they genuinely did not know their exact age as birthdays weren't celebrated as they are today.

I am told Nano "was born with a disability but lived a lengthy life". She never married and lived in Kilbaha, probably with her brother James as she is listed with him and his family in the 1911 census.
+ 54 M viii Michael (Mike) James THORNTON was born about 4 Oct 1861. He died in 1927.
+ 55 M ix James (Jim) THORNTON was born about 6 May 1864.
  56 M x
Francis (Frank) THORNTON was born about 6 Mar 1866 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 8 Mar 1866 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Frank's baptism were Timothy Mulvihill and Johanna Cunningham.

11. Margaret (Peg) CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born about 3 Mar 1835 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 5 Mar 1835 in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. She died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Margaret's baptism were Daniel Kelly and Mary Kelly.

Margaret married Michael HANRAHAN, son of 'unknown' HANRAHAN, on 15 Jan 1854 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Michael was born in possibly Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in probably before 30 Mar 1901 in probably Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Of Michael and his wife Peg's seven children who we know survived to adulthood, four emigrated to Australia, one remained in Co. Kerry, another went to Co. Cork, and another settled in Co. Galway.

Note that the Hanrahan and Cunningham families would be connected once again by marriage: Michael's and Margaret's granddaughter, Lily (daughter of John "The Major" Hanrahan) would marry Paddy Finucane, a great-grandson of Margaret's brother Bryan.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Myles Cunningham and Richard Hanrahan.

Margaret and Michael had the following children.

+ 57 M i John (The Major) HANRAHAN was born about 25 Jan 1856. He died after 2 Apr 1911.
  58 M ii
Patrick HANRAHAN was born about 10 Mar 1858 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 12 Mar 1858 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died.

Sponsors at Patrick's baptism were Timothy Hanrahan and Margaret Hanrahan. It is believed that Patrick died young.
+ 59 M iii William HANRAHAN was born about 1 Jun 1860. He died on 10 Feb 1918.
+ 60 F iv Johanna HANRAHAN was born about 2 Oct 1862. She died in 1909.
  61 M v
James (Jim) HANRAHAN was born about 2 Jan 1866 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 4 Jan 1866 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in 1889 in Alfred Hospital, Prahan, Melbourne, Australia. He was buried in Melbourne General Cemetery.

Sponsors at Jim's baptism were Timothy Hanrahan and Ellen Sheahan.

Jim emigrated to Australia in 1889 but died of typhoid shortly after arrival.
  62 F vi
Catherine HANRAHAN was born about 20 Mar 1868 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 22 Mar 1868 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.

Sponsors at Catherine's baptism were John Hanrahan and (what appears to be) Janetta Kennelly.

It is thought that Catherine died young.
+ 63 F vii Mary Jane (Jane) HANRAHAN was born on 5 Feb 1872. She died in Nov 1945.
+ 64 M viii Michael HANRAHAN was born on 5 Apr 1874. He died in 1926.
  65 F ix
Margaret HANRAHAN was born about 5 Feb 1876 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 7 Feb 1876 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Margaret's baptismal sponsors' names are illegible on the parish register.

Margaret may have died young.
+ 66 F x Ellen (Ellie) HANRAHAN was born on 7 Nov 1877. She died on 13 Nov 1934.

12. Johanna CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born about 25 Sep 1840 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 27 Sep 1840 in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. She died in possibly 1920.

Johanna and Biddy were twins.

Sponsors at Johanna's baptism were Brian Cunningham and Ellen Kerby.

Johanna married Thomas (Tom) CRONIN, son of John CRONIN, on 24 Feb 1857 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Thomas was born about 1831 in Leitrim West (Poul), Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Tom and Johanna lived in Leitrim, Moyvane. According to the 1911 census, they had been married 55 years and had 16 children born alive, 11 of whom were still living at the time of the census. Listed with Tom and his family in the census return is a 12-year-old niece named Catherine Walsh, suggesting that a sister of Tom's had married a man by the name of Walsh (as far as we know, no sister of Johanna's married a Walsh). However, Tom had a granddaughter named Catherine Walsh who would have been 12 years of age at the time of the 1911 census and who is not listed with her own family in that census, so I think it likely that it is actually Tom's granddaughter Catherine whose name appears on the census return for Tom and his family.

It is possible that Tom died on 24 September 1912 as a probate record has been located in the Calendar of Wills and Administrations for a Thomas Cronin of Leitrim West who died on that date, leaving effects valued at £283 17s 3d to a Daniel Cronin, farmer. Could Daniel have been our Tom's son Dan?

There are two brothers, Tom and Patrick Cronin of Leitrim West, who are buried together in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane. Tom died on 20 June 1985 and Patrick on 6 July 1998. It is possible that Tom and Patrick were related to Tom above.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Thomas Fitzmaurice and John Cronin.

Johanna and Thomas had the following children.

  67 M i
John CRONIN was born about 7 Jan 1859 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 7 Jan 1859 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Leitrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John is listed, aged 52 and unmarried, in the 1911 census return for his parents' household.
  68 M ii
Timothy CRONIN was born about 24 Oct 1860 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 24 Oct 1860 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in 1930.
+ 69 F iii Mary CRONIN was born about 26 Oct 1862.
  70 M iv
Jeremiah CRONIN was born about 2 Aug 1868 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 2 Aug 1868 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.
  71 M v
Patrick CRONIN was born about 17 Mar 1870 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 17 Mar 1870 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in possibly San Francisco.

It is possible that Patrick emigrated to the United States and settled in San Francisco. There is an Ellis Island record for a Thomas Cronin, believed to be a son of Johanna Cunningham and Tom Cronin, who was headed to San Francisco to join his brother Patrick.
  72 F vi
Ellen CRONIN was born about 17 Jul 1872 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 17 Jul 1872 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died on 7 Feb 1949 in San Francisco.

Ellen emigrated to the United States as a young woman and settled in San Francisco. She was joined there in 1899 by her sisters Anne and Nora.
  73 F vii
Anne CRONIN was born about 17 Oct 1876 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 17 Oct 1876 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died in possibly San Francisco.

Anne emigrated to San Francisco in 1899.
  74 F viii
Margaret CRONIN was born about 17 Oct 1876 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 17 Oct 1876 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died before 22 May 1883 in probably Leitrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

It seems Margaret and Anne were twins. Because another Margaret was born to Tom and Johanna about seven years later, it is likely that this Margaret died as a child.
  75 M ix
Thomas CRONIN was born about 1879 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in possibly San Francisco.

Tom and Johanna had either a son named Thomas or a close relative named Thomas Cronin who emigrated to San Francisco as a grandniece of Tom and Johanna, Nancy Manley, remembers a relative named Thomas Cronin often visting her parents in San Francisco (she also remembers a relative by the name of Mulvihill who visited). Based on this information, an Ellis Island record was located for a Thomas Cronin from Leitrim, Co. Kerry who emigrated in 1902 and was headed for San Francisco to join his brother Patrick. It seems likely therefore that this Thomas was a son of Tom and Johanna (although Thomas was not among the children of Tom and Johanna for whom birth or baptismal records were located on the Irish Genealogy website). According to the ship manifest for Thomas's voyage, his brother Patrick lived at 48 Prospect St. in San Francisco, which was also the address of his probable cousin Josie O'Connor whose sister Nora travelled on the same voyage to the States as Thomas. It is believed by the family that Thomas never married.
  76 M x
Daniel (Dan) CRONIN was born about 31 Oct 1880 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 31 Oct 1880 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Dan is listed, aged 29 and unmarried, in the 1911 census return for his parents' household.

A Dan Cronin of Leitrim West died at the age of 91 in 1971. He was a widower and was buried in Knockanure Cemetery. His age ties in nicely with the year of birth of our Dan above so it is quite possible that the Dan who died in 1971 is our Dan. We also know that a Dan Cronin of Leitrim West had a daughter named Eileen who emigrated to San Francisco. Given the San Francisco connection of our Dan above (at least four of his siblings lived in San Francisco), it is possible that Eileen was our Dan's daughter.
+ 77 F xi Honora (Nora) CRONIN was born on 20 Jan 1883. She died in early 1930s.
  78 F xii
Margaret CRONIN was born about 22 May 1883 in Leitrim, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 22 May 1883 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Margaret is listed, aged 26 and unmarried, in the 1911 census return for her parents' household.

13. Brigid (Biddy) CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born about 25 Sep 1840 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 27 Sep 1840 in Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry. She died before 2 Apr 1911 in probably Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Biddy and Johanna were twins. Biddy's baptismal sponsors were Alexander Ahern and Bridget Cunningham.

Biddy lived in the townland of Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry, where her husband, John Mulvihill, was born.

Brigid married John MULVIHILL, son of Jeremiah MULVIHILL, on 12 Feb 1861 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John was born about 1834 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 14 Nov 1915 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John lived with his daughter Margaret (Mulvihill) and her family in Aughrim towards the end of his life.

Could John above have been related to a Fr. Michael Mulvihill who was born in 1847 in Aughrim to Patrick Mulvihill and Hannah Walsh?

And could he be connected to Cornelius (Con) Mulvihill from Aughrim who died at his home in Wilston, Brisbane, Queensland on 15 September 1948? Con was married to Annie (surname unknown) and they had a daughter named Rita who was married to a Mr. O'Sullivan.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were John Stack and Michael Hanrahan.

Brigid and John had the following children.

  79 F i
Ellen MULVIHILL was born about 26 Nov 1861 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 28 Nov 1861 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 8 Apr 1943 in 317 North 34th St., Philadelphia. She was buried in St. Denis Cemetery, Havertown, Pennsylvania.

Ellen's baptismal sponsors were Denis Mulvihill and Mary Mulvihill.

Ellen emigrated to the United States in 1881 at the age of 19. She settled in Philadelphia where she married and raised a family. She died at her home in Philadelphia at the age of 81.

Ellen married Cornelius SPEARING, son of Thomas SPEARING and Johanna MELVILLE, in 1886 in Philadelphia. Cornelius was born in 1858 in Cressona, Pennsylvania. He died on 28 Nov 1929 in 325 North Preston St., Philadelphia. He was buried in St. Denis Cemetery, Havertown, Pennsylvania.

Cornelius's parents were born in Ireland.
  80 F ii
Johanna MULVIHILL was born about 6 Jul 1863 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 8 Jul 1863 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were John Enright and Margaret Mulvihill.
+ 81 M iii Patrick MULVIHILL was born about 10 Feb 1865.
  82 F iv
Mary MULVIHILL was born about 20 Jul 1866 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 22 Jul 1866 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were John Wallace and Elizabeth Thornton.
  83 F v
Bridget J. (Jennie) MULVIHILL was born on 15 Jul 1868 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 16 Jul 1868 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 17 Aug 1959 in 6140 Columbia Avenue, Philadelphia.

Jennie's baptismal sponsors were Michael Mulvihill and Ellen Reidy. She emigrated to the United States at the age of 15, joining her sister Ellen who lived in Philadelphia. Jennnie, who was a nurse and who never married, died at her home in Philadelphia aged 91.
  84 F vi
Hanora MULVIHILL was born about 11 Feb 1870 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 13 Feb 1870 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Denis Mulvihill and Johanna Cunningham.
  85 M vii
Jeremiah MULVIHILL was born about 10 Aug 1871 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 12 Aug 1871 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Denis Mulvihill and Honora Fury.
+ 86 F viii Margaret MULVIHILL was born on 8 May 1873. She died on 25 Jan 1966.
  87 F ix
Ann MULVIHILL was born on 1 Jan 1875 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 3 Jan 1875 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Leonard Hanrahan and Mary Hanrahan.
  88 M x
John MULVIHILL was born about 26 Dec 1876 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 28 Dec 1876 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Jeremiah Enright and Ellen Mulvihill.

John is listed, unmarried, in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses as a member of the household of his brother Patrick.
  89 F xi
Catherine MULVIHILL was born about 10 Apr 1879 in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 12 Apr 1879 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Baptismal sponsors were Michael Carr and Mary Carr.
  90 M xii
Michael (Mick) MULVIHILL was born in Aughrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died.

While I have no documented evidence that Mick was a son of John and Bridget, a family source has told that John and Bridget had a son named Michael who was known as "Mick the Manager" because he was assistant manager of Newtownsandes Co-Op Creamery. However, I have been told by another famly source that Mick the Manager was born in Kilbaha rather than Aughrim, so it is possible that he was not in fact a son of John and Bridget's. Any help in establishing who Mick the Manager's parents were would be most welcome. Please email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees. Thanks.

There was another Michael Mulvihill from Aughrim who had a long association with the creamery, working there from 1925 until 1973. Was he related to Mick above? Could he have been Mick the Manager? There was also a Michael (known as Mick) P. Mulvihill from Aughrim whose wife's name was Hannie and who died on 6 December 1991. Could he have been related to the family of Mick above? I have also been told of a Michael Mulvihill (Moyvane townland of origin unknown) who was married to a Johanna (known as Hannie) Sheehy and whose parents were Patrick Mulvihill and Ellen Mulvihill. It is possible that this Michael is the Michael who died on 6 December 1991.

14. Ann (Nance) CUNNINGHAM (Myles , 'unknown' ) was born in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She died before 31 Mar 1901.

Ann married Patrick (Pat) O'CONNOR, son of Thomas O'CONNOR and 'unknown' BROSNAN, on 19 Dec 1866 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. Patrick was born about 1833 in Shronebeirne, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died after 2 Apr 1911.

After their marriage, Pat and Nance lived in Kilbaha - they were immediate neighbours of Nance's brother, Bryan.

There are 1901 and 1911 census returns from Kilbaha North for Pat's household. The 1901 returns give the following information:

Patrick (67), head
Thomas (31), son
Mary (28), daughter
James (26), son
Nora (22), daughter
John (19), son

In 1911, Pat is listed along with his son Thomas and daughter, Mary. It is possible that Thomas and Mary never married.

Kevin O'Connor from Kent has provided information on Pat's family: Pat's father's name was Thomas O'Connor and his mother's last name was Brosnan. Besides Pat, Thomas had five other children that we know of: Mary, born in 1827; James (Kevin's great-grandfather), born in 1828 who went to farm in Meenahorna, Duagh; Thomas who farmed at Shronebeirne; John T. who moved to Farranpierce in the parish of Killehenny; and Denis who emigrated to the United States. Kevin has put his family history together in a book 'The Descendants of the O'Connors of Carrigafoyle Stemming from the Datheenachs Line' (2006). Besides  the O'Connors, other families covered in Kevin's work include the Brosnans of Shronebeirne, the Byrnes of Coolanelig in Duagh, the Keanes of Ballygrennan in Finuge, and many more. For further information contact Kevin at kevin@oconnor4488.fsworld.co.uk.

Marriage Notes:

The marriage was witnessed by Michael Hanrahan of Kilbaha, Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry.

The above information, along with the marriage date of 19 December 1866, come from microfilm copies of Moyvane parish registers held in the National Library of Ireland. However, on the Ancestry website the date of marriage is given as 19 February 1867.

Ann and Patrick had the following children.

  91 M i
Thomas O'CONNOR was born about 22 May 1868 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 24 May 1868 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Thomas's baptism were James Connor and Johanna Cunningham.
  92 M ii
Myles O'CONNOR was born about 22 Oct 1869 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 24 Oct 1869 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died in possibly U.S..

Sponsors at Myles's baptism were Daniel Kearney and Margaret Kearney.

Myles emigrated to the United States in 1899. It is thought that he lived initially in Poughkeepsie where he had a cousin (on the ship manifest, the cousin's name looks like Mary Lally of St. Mary's Church, Church St. Poughkeepsie) and later moved to New Jersey. It seems he subsequently lost contact with his family.
  93 F iii
Mary O'CONNOR was born on 4 May 1871 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 13 May 1871 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were John Connor and Ellen Sheehy.
  94 M iv
James O'CONNOR was born on 29 Dec 1873 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 3 Jan 1874 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry.

James's baptismal sponsors were John Connor and Margaret Thornton.

Unfortunately we have no further information on James.
+ 95 F v Johanna (Josie) O'CONNOR was born on 28 Dec 1875. She died on 29 Apr 1961.
+ 96 F vi Honora (Nora) O'CONNOR was born on 27 Apr 1878. She died on 29 Apr 1959.
  97 M vii
John O'CONNOR was born on 13 Aug 1881 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 13 Aug 1881 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in possibly U.S..

John's baptismal sponsors were Daniel Kearney and Mary Cunningham.

According to Ellis Island records, John emigrated to the United States in September 1906. He was headed for San Francisco to join his sister Josie. The only other information we have about John is that he was naturalised in Spokane, Washington in 1916.

16. Bryan (Little Bryan) "Little Bryan" CUNNINGHAM (Daniel , 'unknown' ) was born about 25 May 1813 in possibly Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 27 May 1813 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. He died in possibly 4 February 1894 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

A Bryan Dan Cunningham died in Kilbaha on 4 February 1894 aged 79 (giving an estimated birth year of 1814, a close match with Little Bryan's birth year. Furthermore the name Bryan Dan indicates that his father's name was Dan (following the tradition at the time of adding the father's name to the first name to distinguish the person from others of the same name in the area. I therefore believe that Bryan Dan is our Little Bryan. Bryan Dan's death record tells us he was married (rather than widowed), indicating that our Bryan's wife, Honora, outlived him. The informant's name was Pat McMahon of Kilbaha, a neighbour perhaps.

Little Bryan married Catherine DANAHER (caution: not verified). Catherine died.

We are not entirely certain that Bryan's wife was Catherine Danaher but we are assuming she was because baptismal records were located for six children of a Bernardus (equivalent of Bryan) Cunningham and a Catherine Danaher of Kilbaha (including a Margaret whose name was included in a list of Little Bryan's children that I had already been provided with). As far as I can ascertain, there was only one other Bryan Cunningham living in Kilbaha in the 1850s and '60s when these children were born. He was Little Bryan's first cousin and was married to a Johanna Hudson. I am therefore making the assumption that Little Bryan was married to Catherine Danaher but because I have been unable to verify this I have added the caution.

They had the following children.

  98 M i
Daniel CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 10 Oct 1855 in Kilbaha, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 12 Oct 1855 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Daniel's baptism were John Cunningham and Margaret Stack.
  99 F ii
Mary CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 5 Mar 1857 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 5 Mar 1857 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were William Hartnett and Mary Cunningham.

It is possible that Mary may have married a Nicholas Costello as a marriage record has been located (on www.irishgenealogy.ie) for a Mary Cunningham who married a Nicholas Costello  of Coolaclarig, Listowel, Co. Kerry on 31 July 1882 in Moyvane. Witnesses were John Shanahan and William Hudson. Mary's father's name is given on the marriage record as B. Daniel (possibly Bryan Daniel, as our Mary's father would have been known as he was Bryan and his father was Daniel). Nicholas was born in 1858 to Nicholas Costello and Ellen Walsh. From census records we know that Mary and Nicholas farmed in Coolaclarig and had three children: Thomas (born about 1884), Nicholas (about 1890) and Mary (about 1891).
+ 100 F iii Hanora (Norrie) CUNNINGHAM was born about 1 Sep 1858.
  101 M iv
Bryan CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 6 Jul 1860 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 6 Jul 1860 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Bryan's baptism were William Stack and Mary Stack.
+ 102 M v Maurice CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born about 20 May 1862. He died on 25 Apr 1924.
+ 103 M vi James (Jim) CUNNINGHAM was born about 1863. He died on 27 May 1928.
  104 F vii
Margaret (Maggie) CUNNINGHAM was born about 20 Oct 1863 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 22 Oct 1863 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Margaret's baptism were Hanora Cunningham and John Healy.

Maggie's age (29) at the time of the 1901 census doesn't tie in with her baptismal date which would have made her 37 at the time of the 1901 census.

In the 1901 census Maggie is listed in the return of the household of her brother James in Kilbaha North. Her occupation is given as shopkeeper.
  105 F viii
Johanna (Joanie) CUNNINGHAM was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.
  106 F ix
Ann (Nance) CUNNINGHAM was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.
  107 M x
John CUNNINGHAM (caution: not verified) was born on 23 Feb 1867 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 28 Feb 1867 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at John's baptism were Jeremiah Doody and Ellen Scanlon.
  108 F xi
Ellen ("Little Nell") "Little Nell" CUNNINGHAM was born in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.

Little Nell never married.

20. Johanna CUNNINGHAM (Daniel , 'unknown' ) was born about 21 Nov 1823 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 23 Nov 1823 in Listowel, Co. Kerry. She died on 2 Sep 1902 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Johanna married James HARRINGTON on 19 Feb 1852 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. James was born about 1830. He died in between 2 Sep 1902 and 2 Apr 1911 in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I have been told that the James Harrington who married Johanna Cunningham may have come from the Irremore area of Listowel, Co. Kerry. Our Johanna's Cunningham family of Kilbaha had connections with Irremore in that a putative first cousin of Johanna's, Bishop John Francis Cunningham, was born in Irremore, supporting the theory that James was from Irremore, but this of course is no proof.

Note: A Mary Harrington of Kilbaha, Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry emigrated to the United States in 1899 aged 25, joining her brother (whose first name or initial is illegible on the ship manifest) at 374 Lexington Avenue in Brooklyn. Could Mary have been a daughter or granddaughter of James and Johanna?

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Denis Harrington and Mary Harrington.

Johanna and James had the following children.

+ 109 F i Bridget HARRINGTON was born about 8 Jan 1853. She died.
  110 F ii

No baptismal sponsors are recorded on Hanora's baptismal record. Hanora must have died as an infant because her parents had another daughter about three years later whom they named Hanora.
+ 111 F iii Johanna HARRINGTON was born about 1855.
+ 112 F iv Honora (Nora) HARRINGTON was born about 13 Nov 1856. She died in between 31 Mar 1901 and 2 Apr 1911.

+ 115 M vii James HARRINGTON was born about 20 Feb 1861.
  116 F viii
Ann HARRINGTON was born about 2 Jan 1863 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 4 Jan 1863 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ann's baptismal sponsors were Daniel Stack and Honora Stack.
  117 F ix
Ellen HARRINGTON was born about 10 Nov 1865 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 12 Nov 1865 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died.

Ellen's baptismal sponsors were Edmund Stack and Mary Stack.

Ellen married Patrick MCCARTHY, son of Michael MCCARTHY and Sarah 'UNKNOWN', on 24 Feb 1895 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Patrick was born in probably Tarbert, Co. Kerry. He died.

23. Ellen CUNNINGHAM (John , 'unknown' ) was born about 1818 in probably Co. Limerick. She died on 17 Jun 1919 in Irremore, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

The 1911 census indicated that Ellen was living at the time (2 April 1911) with her widowed daughter Kate Daly in Irremore.

Ellen married John HARRINGTON on 1 Nov 1850 in Lixnaw, Co. Kerry. John was born about 1814 in probably Mountcoal, Co. Kerry. He died on 11 Jan 1905 in Irremore, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

Bryan lived in Mountcoal, Lixnaw, Co. Kerry prior to emigrating to the United States in 1860. Bryan lived with his young family in Atchison, Kansas initially before settling in Kansas City, Missouri in 1867. According to 'Kansas City, Missouri: its history and its people 1808-1908, Volume 3' (1908) by Carrie Westlake Whitney, 'In 1879 he purchased one hundred and sixty-two and a half feet fronting on Liberty at the corner of Seventeenth Street, erected here a hotel and in 1884 built five cottage homes on the balance of his land. He has since continued in the hotel business.

According to an article in The Kerryman newspaper of 30 October 1915 on Bryan's brother Bishop John Cunningham of Concordia, Bryan was "one-time Mayor of Kansas".

In Bryan's will, dated 11 November 1907, when he had estimated the value of his property to be $42,000, he left $10,000 each to Ellen, Maggie, Anna and Bernard; and 'as they had already been provided for' he left just $10 each to his other two surviving children, Thomas and Catherine. $1,000 was left to each of two grandchildren, and a final $1,000 was to be allocated for a monument for his wife and hismself.

Note: Bryan is listed as Patrick in some U.S. censuses.

Bryan married Margaret SCANLON, daughter of John SCANLON, on 1 Jan 1857 in Ballylongford, Co. Kerry. Margaret was born about 1838 in probably Tarbert, Co. Kerry. She died on 8 Nov 1893 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Of the 12 children born to Margaret and Bryan only six were alive by 1910: Kate, Thomas (who died in 1914), Nellie, Maggie, Anna and Bernard.
