Patrick (Pat) O'HARA [Parents] was born about 6 Dec 1857 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 6 Dec 1857. He died before 2 Apr 1911. Patrick married Mary Ann LEYLAND on 3 Feb 1879 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Pat's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Joanna O'Hara.

Pat was a shopkeeper and publican in Cootehall. He died young leaving behind a wife and young family. His wife, Mary Ann, was a sister of the wife of his brother Joseph.

Mary Ann LEYLAND [Parents] died in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Mary married Patrick (Pat) O'HARA on 3 Feb 1879 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

After Patrick died, Mary Ann took over the running of their shop in Cootehall, which became known as "Mary Ann's" while her father-in-law, William, helped in the raising of her children.

Note that I have seen Leyland spelled Leland and Layland.

John Joseph (Joe) O'HARA was born on 16 Apr 1888 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died on 10 Jun 1959 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. He was buried in Ardcarne Cemetery, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Joe was a member of the Old IRA and later a member of the Civic Guard in Longford. He then joined the Garda Siochana, the Irish police force, and retired as a sergeant. I was told by a family source that Joe never married but he is described as a widower on his death record.
  F vi Emily Theresa O'HARA was born on 19 Nov 1889. She died on 13 Mar 1967.
  F vii Anne (Annie, Nan) O'HARA was born about 1895. She died on 24 Apr 1992.

Patrick (Pa) O'HARA [Parents] was born on 2 Apr 1859 in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. He died on 2 Dec 1951 in Skerries, Co. Dublin. He was buried on 4 Dec 1951 in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin. Patrick married Mary (Mud) O'HARA on 5 Apr 1885 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Pa joined the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) on 13 December 1876 and retired from the force on 14 August 1920. From his retirement parchment we know that Pa at age 61 years and five months was 5' 11" with grey hair and grey eyes. According to his marriage certificate, Pa was living in the townland of Derreenavoggy in Boyle, Co. Roscommon at the time of his marriage in 1885.  At the time of the 1911 census, Pa and his family were living in Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath.

Pa and Mud are believed to have been cousins. According to the 1911 census, Pa and Mud had 14 children born alive, only nine of whom were still alive at the time of the census. The family, who lived in Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath at the time of the 1911 census, eventually moved Skerries, Co. Dublin.

Mary (Mud) O'HARA [Parents] was born about 22 Jun 1863 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 22 Jun 1863. She died on 18 Dec 1941 in Dublin. She was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin. Mary married Patrick (Pa) O'HARA on 5 Apr 1885 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Mud's baptism were James Boyde and Maria Berne.

Joseph was a member of the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) and worked in Dublin. His wife, Kate, was a sister of the wife of his brother Patrick.

Catherine (Kate) LEYLAND [Parents] died. Catherine married Joseph O'HARA on 11 Aug 1906 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

William O'HARA [Parents] was born on 20 Feb 1883 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died on 29 Oct 1923 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. William married Florence (Dolly) Maud WHITNEY on 28 Dec 1922 in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

William was a member of the Old IRA as a young man. He took over the running of his parents' shop and pub after the death of his mother. He died at the age of 39 of "acute gastritis" and "cardiac failure".

Florence (Dolly) Maud WHITNEY [Parents] was born about 1901 in Bolton, Lancashire. She died in 1985 in Victoria, Australia. Florence married William O'HARA on 28 Dec 1922 in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

KELLY, Bartholomew (Bartley)

Dolly remarried after her first husband, William, died less than a year into their marriage. Dolly and William had no children but Dolly and her second husband, Bartley Kelly, had a family and emigrated to Australia, where all of Dolly's siblings eventually also settled.


Bartholomew (Bartley) KELLY [Parents] was born on 26 May 1892 in probably Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon. He died on 13 Aug 1949 in Victoria, Australia. Bartholomew married Florence (Dolly) Maud WHITNEY on 4 Nov 1924 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

At the time of his marriage to Dolly (1924), Bartley was living in Carrick-on-Shannon and working as a solicitor's clerk. He and Dolly emigrated with their family to Australia around 1930, but Bartley died shortly afterwards.

Florence (Dolly) Maud WHITNEY [Parents] was born about 1901 in Bolton, Lancashire. She died in 1985 in Victoria, Australia. Florence married Bartholomew (Bartley) KELLY on 4 Nov 1924 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

Dolly remarried after her first husband, William, died less than a year into their marriage. Dolly and William had no children but Dolly and her second husband, Bartley Kelly, had a family and emigrated to Australia, where all of Dolly's siblings eventually also settled.

James WHITNEY [Parents] was born about 12 Jun 1863 in Breanletter, Keadue, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 12 Jun 1863. He died on 23 Sep 1920 in Longford, Co. Longford. James married Mary Jane MOLLOY on 11 Oct 1895 in Dundalk, Co. Louth.

James died of stomach cancer only six days after the death of his wife, Mary Jane.

Mary Jane MOLLOY [Parents] was born on 23 Mar 1869 in Breanletter, Keadue, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She died on 17 Sep 1920 in Co. Longford. Mary married James WHITNEY on 11 Oct 1895 in Dundalk, Co. Louth.

Mary Jane and husband, James, who were neighbours in Co. Roscommn, eloped. Their eldest children were born in England and the younger children in Ireland. The family was living in Elphin town, Co. Roscommon at the time of the 1911 census.

Mary Jane and James died within days of each other of unrelated natural causes, Mary Jane (aged 51) of heart disease and James (58) of stomach cancer. Their youngest children were still very young at the time of their parents' deaths. I am told all of their children emigrated to Australia.

Maud O'HARA [Parents] was born on 10 Jun 1897 in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath. She died on 17 Jun 1979 in Ratoath, Co. Meath. Maud married Michael KELLY on 5 Apr 1921 in Westland Row, Dublin.

Maud lived at 46 St. Pappin's Road, Glasnevin, Dublin.

Patrick was a farmer in the townland of Cloongreaghan in Cootehall.

Mary Catherine (Mary Kate) GLYNN [Parents] was born about 1873 in Co. Roscommon. She died on 1 Nov 1945. Mary married Patrick O'HARA on 28 Oct 1897.

Could Mary Kate have been related to Jim Glynn from Cootehall who married her husband's second cousin, Evelyn Mary O'Hara, daughter of Laurence O'Hara and Bridget Gordon? We do know that it was not Mary Kate's brother James (known as 'The Master') who married Evelyn.
