Owen MORAGHAN [Parents] was born about 1800 in Cleaheen, Tumna, Co. Roscommon. He died on 8 May 1870 in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. Owen married Mary GILDEA.

Moraghan researchers may be interested in the 'Moraghan Legacy' from the late 1920s involving the estate of a local man (I have been unsuccessful in finding his name or exact place of birth) who had made a fortune in the United States and died intestate. It was eventually decided that part of his estate, worth approximately £13,000-£20,000, should go to the Moraghan family from the Carrick-on-Shannon area. Of course this generated much interest locally, especially with the various branches of the Moraghan family vying with each other in claiming the legacy. The Cleaheen Moraghans (including those descended from Cleaheen Moraghans) felt they had the stronger case but other branches of the family also submitted their claim. The latter comprised, according to the Leitrim Observer edition of 13 July 1929, those branches of the family "who originally came from Ballinagare, Aughrim, Ballinamore or Ballyfarnon" and who joined forces against the Cleaheen branch in their battle for the legacy. In the event, the lion's share went to a member of the Cleaheen family, "a renowned oarsman and all-round athlete", according to a later edition of the Leitrim Observer. Unfortunately, no further information as to his identity was provided. It is likely descendants of Owen's were claimants in this case.

It is possible Owen was related to a Thomas Moraghan who may have farmed in the Tumna area around the same time as Owen. Thomas was the father of James (c.1850-1915), who was a soldier, and Pat (c.1854-1928), a militia sergeant. Both James and Pat died in Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

And for researchers of the Cootehall Morahans, Loree found a Tithe Applotment record (1823-1837) for an Owen (interchangeable with Eugene) Moraghan in Foxhill, which is adjacent to Moigh and Cootehall.
