Other marriages:
GREGORY, George

I have no evidence to prove that Ellen was in fact a daughter of Cornelius and Mary but I have been DNA-matched with a great-great-great-grandchild of Ellen's (a descendant of Catherine Dillawn (née Gregory)) that indicates a close connection between Ellen, Cornelius and Mary. I have also been told that Ellen's daughter, Mary Stack, was related to Ellen McQuinn/Quinn, daughter of Cornelius's daughter Catherine who married James McQuinn/Quinn. Both Ellen McQuinn and Mary lived in Nicholas County, Kentucky. This information was provided by a descendant of Mary Stack.

Ellen Shanahan emigrated to the United States. She and her second husband, George Gregory. along with with their two daughters, Nancy and Catherine, left Ireland around 1950, while Mary (Stack), Ellen's daughter from her first marriage, and Mary's half-brother, Richard Gregory, remained. Two years later, Mary and Richard rejoined their family, arriving in New Orleans in 1852, by which time their youngest sibling, John, had been born in Paris, Kentucky where the family had settled.

They had the following children.

F i Mary STACK was born about 6 Jan 1832. She died on 3 Mar 1912.

Michael DORE died in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Michael married Ellen SHANAHAN about 1830.

Ellen SHANAHAN died in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Ellen married Michael DORE about 1830.

Was Ellen connected to my Shanahan family of Kilbaha, Moyvane?

They had the following children.

James QUINN (caution: marriage not verified) was born in 1798 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died on 13 May 1861 in probably Kentucky. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Paris, Kentucky. James married Catherine SHANAHAN (caution: relationship to John not verified) on 10 Feb 1835 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

We are not entirely certain that Catherine, daughter of Cornelius Shanahan and Mary Dillane, married James as there was another Catherine Shanahan in the area at the time who married a Patrick Buckley and who lived in Kilbaha and had a child named Julia or Juliann, baptised on 11 September 1839. However, the fact that Catherine and James had a son named Cornelius makes me think it was James who married Cornelius and Mary's daughter.

James, Catherine and their family emigrated to the United States, probably in the 1850s, where they went by the name of McQuinn. They appear to have settled in the Paris area of Kentucky.

Catherine SHANAHAN (caution: relationship to John not verified) [Parents] was born about 7 Sep 1811 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. She was christened on 9 Sep 1811 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 15 Dec 1884 in probably Kentucky. She was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Paris, Kentucky. Johanna SHANAHAN died in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Johanna married James CARRIG.

They had the following children.

  M i
James CARRIG was born about 1 Mar 1838. He was christened on 3 Mar 1838.

Thomas SHANAHAN died in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Thomas married Bridget SHEAHAN.

Bridget SHEAHAN died in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Bridget married Thomas SHANAHAN.

Cornelius SHANAHAN died in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Cornelius married Mary MCMAHON.

I think it likely that Cornelius was related to my Shanahan family who were also from Kilbaha.

Mary MCMAHON died in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Mary married Cornelius SHANAHAN.

They had the following children.

  M i
James SHANAHAN was born in 1838 in possibly Athea, Co. Limerick. He was christened in Athea, Co. Limerick.
  M ii
Cornelius SHANAHAN was born about 12 Sep 1839 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened on 14 Sep 1839 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

James SHANAHAN [Parents] was born in probably about 6 Dec 1816 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He was christened in probably 8 Dec 1816 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 23 Jan 1902 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. James married 'UNKNOWN'.

I know of James's connection to my family from his death certificate on which the informant is a nephew, Richard Shanahan of Kilbaha. Richard was my great-grandfather. Furthermore there is a Griffith's Valuation entry (December 1851) for a James and a John Shanahan in Kilbaha West who jointly leased about 56 acres from Charles L. Sandes, indicating a family relationship.

!It appears James was the James Shanahan baptised in Moyvane on 8 December 1816 who was a son of Cornelius Shanahan and Mary Dillane (sponsors were Patrick Paradine and Ellen Shanahan); I can find no trace of any other James Shanahan born around that time in Kilbaha so I am assuming the baptism is that of our James above. However I cannot say for certain that Cornelius and Mary were our James's parents.

'UNKNOWN' died. 'UNKNOWN' married James SHANAHAN.

We know that James married as he is described as a widower in the 1901 census and on his death cerificate. However we do not know whom he married. The only marriage of a James Shanahan in Moyvane in the right time frame on the Irish Genealogy website is that of a James Shanahan (no address provided) and Margaret Dore of Moyvane on 23 February 1841. However the Irish Genealogy list may be incomplete or James may have married outside the parish. No baptism records were located on Irish Genealogy for children of James and Margaret, nor have I come across any evidence that our James above had children.

Cornelius SHANAHAN (caution: relationship to sons John and James not verified) died in probably Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Cornelius married Mary DILLANE (caution: relationship to sons John and James not verified).

Cornelius farmed in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane). He appears to be the father of my known ancestor John Shanahan based on the fact that I have been DNA-matched by Ancestry with a number of Cornelius's great-great-great-grandchildren, the type of match suggesting the above connection. However, because this is not 100% certain, I have added a caution.

There are other Shanahan families with Kilbaha connections but I have been unable to determine if they are related to Cornelius or myself: a Margaret Shanahan married a Daniel Connell around 1830 and lived in Kilbaha. They had at least four children: Patrick (born 1831), Johanna (1834), Daniel (1837) and Mary (1842). Then there is an Ellen Shanahan who married a Henry Langan and who had at least two children born in Kilbaha: Mary, born in 1819, and Patrick, in 1823.  A Sarah Shanahan, married to a Redmond Langan, had a son named Denis, born in Kilbaha in 1828; and a Mary Shanahan, married to a Thomas Sperane, had at least two children: John, born in Kilbaha 1813, and Thomas, born in 1815, also in Kilbaha. There was a Johanna Shanahan, married to a James Carrig and living in Kilbaha, who had a son named James who was born in 1838. There were two Thomas Shanahans, one who married Brigid Sheehan and who had a daughter name Jane in 1838, and the other who married Brigid Nolan and had a daughter named Mary in 1862. However, we have no evidence to connect these families to ours.

In the course of my research I have also come across references to a Presentation brother named Edmund Shanahan who was born in Kilbaha in 1841. However, it appears he was actually born in Listowel, Co. Kerry, so there is probably no connection to my family, but just in case he is related to me, here is the information I have found on him:

Edmund's parents were Edmund Shanahan and Ellen Stack. Edmund junior entered the Presentation novitiate at the South Monastery in Cork in 1860, taking Austin as his name in religion. Br. Austin became principal teacher in the South Monastery and in 1871 he was elected Superior of that school. From 1871 to 1874 he was very involved in the building of St. Joseph's Industrial School in Greenmount in Cork, and later, in 1880, he took charge of St. Vincent's School in Dartford, Kent, turning round its fortunes. Returning to Cork in 1882, he was once again elected Superior of the South Monastery. In 1889 Br. Austin was elected one of the four Assistants to the first Superior General of the Presentation order. In the late 1880s and early 1890s he travelled extensively in the United States, Australia and New Zealand collecting money to build a new novitiate at Mount St. Joseph in Cork. Br. Austin died on 24 October 1902 and is buried in the vault in the South Monastery.

The Shanahan surname is common throughout Munster and the south-east. The Shanahans were a sept of Thomond, an area which covered much of north Munster, but in 1318 they were expelled from the Sixmilebridge area of Co. Clare by Turlough O'Brien and the McNamaras. They were scattered throughout Munster, especially in counties Limerick, Cork and Waterford.
