Roger O'HARA [Parents] was born about 1800 in Co. Sligo, or Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died before 25 Jan 1865 in Oxhill, Knockvicar, Co. Roscommon. Roger married Maria MURRAY.

Roger is listed as an occupier of 9¾ acres in Oxhill in Tithe Applotment records dated 1834.

Maria MURRAY died after 25 Jan 1865. Maria married Roger O'HARA.

Roger and Maria lived in the townland of Knockaduff where in 1834 they farmed 10 acres, which had risen to 17 by 1858.

They may have had another son, named Michael, as the New South Wales Assited Immigrant Passenger Lists show that a Michael O'Hara, aged 28 and from Cootehall, Co. Roscommon arrived aboard the Hornet in New South Wales, Australia on 25 January 1865. Michael was therefore born about 1836 which fits in with the births of the children of Maria and Roger. Or perhaps Michael was a son of Roger's brother William and his wife, Jane Boyde, who also had children around the same time that Michael was born.

They had the following children.

M i Patrick (Pat) O'HARA was born about 1830. He died on 13 Dec 1918.
F ii Mary O'HARA was born in 1831. She died after 2 Apr 1911.
  M iii
Michael O'HARA was born about 1836 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Michael emigrated to Australia aboard the Hornet, arriving there on 25 January 1865. According to the passenger list, he was a policeman.
F iv Catherine O'HARA was born about 1837. She died in possibly 1918.
  M v Roger O'HARA was born about 1839. He died on 31 May 1911.
  M vi
Andrew O'HARA was born about 10 Mar 1844 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 10 Mar 1844. He died in possibly U.S..

Sponsors at Andrew's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Maria O'Hara.

We know Andrew emigrated to the United States because an 1880 census record has been located for him in the household of his sister Anne and her husband, John Ryan, in Jersey City, New Jersey.
F vii Anne O'HARA was born on 17 May 1846. She died on 1 Nov 1923.

Patrick O'HARA [Parents] was born in 1808 in Co. Sligo, or Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died in 1886. He was buried in outside the O'Hara family plot in Ardcarne cemetery, Cootehall. Patrick married Honoria LAVIN.

Patrick farmed in the townland of Clegna (sometimes spelled Cleigna), Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He was known locally as 'the Colonel'. The story goes that when when he and his brother Laurence were young, they had a quarrel. To settle the matter their father arranged a boxing contest, which Patrick won. As a result of his success, people started calling him 'the Colonel' and the nickname stuck.

Honoria LAVIN was born about 1809. She died on 29 Mar 1896 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She was buried in outside the O'Hara family plot in Ardcarne cemetary, Cootehall. Honoria married Patrick O'HARA.

At the time of her death in 1896 Honoria was living in Corrageen (also spelled Carrageen and Carrigeen), Cootehall.

Could Honoria have been related to Catherine Lavin, the mother-in-law of her daughter Anne (McDermott)?

They had the following children.

  F i Catherine O'HARA was born about 1836. She died in 1903.
M ii Michael O'HARA was born about 1840. He died about 1921.
M iii William O'HARA was born about 1841. He died on 2 Feb 1898.
  M iv
Patrick O'HARA was born about 31 May 1843 in probably Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 31 May 1843. He died on 26 Jan 1921 in Four Mile House, Kilbride, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Patrick's baptism were Laurence O'Hara and Maria Lavin.

Patrick was parish priest of Kilbride, Co. Roscommon from at least the time of the 1901 census to the time of his death in 1921. However, I have also been told that Patrick's first cousin Patrick O'Hara, son of William O'Hara and Jane Boyde, was also parish priest in Kilbride so there may be some confusion here. It is of course possible that both Patricks served as parish priest of Kilbride at different times.

  M v Roger O'HARA was born about 12 Jan 1846.
F vi Mary O'HARA was born about 14 May 1848.
F vii Anne O'HARA was born about 1850. She died on 24 Mar 1922.
F viii Bridget O'HARA was born about 1853.

Thaddeus (Thady) MCLOUGHLIN [Parents] was born about 16 Apr 1821. He was christened on 16 Apr 1821. Thaddeus married Mary O'HARA (caution: not verified) on 3 Feb 1845 in Cootehall, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

Mary O'HARA (caution: not verified) [Parents] was born in 1820s in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died. Mary married Thaddeus (Thady) MCLOUGHLIN on 3 Feb 1845 in Cootehall, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

Mary and her husband, Thady, may have had more children than those listed below.

We think Mary was a child of William and Jane only because their son Rossy and his wife, Lizzie, has a 16-year-old niece named Maggie McLoughlin listed as a member of his household in the 1911 census. Mary and Thady had a granddaughter named Maggie McLoughlin who would have been around 16 years of age in 1911, actually making her a grandniece of Roger and Lizzie's. I am, nevertheless, inclined to believe that Mary above was indeed a child of William and Jane, but I have added a caution, just in case.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were James McLoughlin and Maria Moran.

They had the following children.

  M i
William MCLOUGHLIN was born about 29 Dec 1845. He was christened on 29 Dec 1845.

Baptismal sponsors were William O'Hara and Margaret McLoughlin.
M ii Farrell MCLOUGHLIN was born about 9 May 1848. He died on 20 Nov 1919.

Matthew MCDERMOTT [Parents] was born about 1836 in probably Riverstown, Co. Sligo. He died on 30 Oct 1921 in Annagh, Ballyfarnon, Co. Sligo. Matthew married Anne O'HARA on 9 Feb 1874.

Ann and Matthew were cousins (type unknown), presumably through the Lavins.

One of Ann and Matthew's descendants is Jim Kilcoyne who lives in Scituate, Massachussets but it is not known exactly how Jim is related.

Anne O'HARA [Parents] was born about 1850 in probably Clegna, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died on 24 Mar 1922 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Anne married Matthew MCDERMOTT on 9 Feb 1874.

We have Anne's approximate year of birth from the 1851 census extract, used to give proof of age when Anne applied for a pension in 1920. The extract gives her age in 1851 as under 12 months, which means she was born in 1850 or early 1851. The extract also tells us she was living in Annagh Lodge, Ballindoon, Boyle, Co. Roscommon in 1920, and lists the names of her siblings and their ages in 1851.

!Anne died at the home of her son John who lived in {what looks like, on the death record] Mullaghduff, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Edward Cogan and Brigid O'Hara.

They had the following children.

  F i
Mary MCDERMOTT was born on 28 Feb 1878 in Tawnagh, Riverstown, Co. Sligo.
  F ii
Catherine (Katie) MCDERMOTT was born about 1879 in Co. Sligo.

We know of Katie's existence from the 1901 census where she is listed as a member of the household of her uncle Fr. Patrick O'Hara in Kilbride, Co. Roscommon. She is also listed with her uncle in the 1911 census. And at the time of the marriage of her cousin Katie O'Hara in November 1914 she was living at Four Mile House, Co. Roscommon, where Fr. Patrick was also living at the time. Perhaps Katie was his housekeeper.
  M iii
James MCDERMOTT was born on 29 Mar 1881 in Annagh, Ballyfarnon, Co. Sligo.

James lived in Annagh, Ballyfarnon, Co. Sligo.

Patrick MULLANY/MULLANEY [Parents] was born about 1838 in Kilmactranny, Co. Sligo. He died about 1916 in Coolmurla, Geevagh, Co. Sligo. Patrick married Eleanor (Ellen) O'HARA on 13 Jan 1867 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Patrick and his wife, Ellen, and family lived in Coolmurla (sometimes spelled Coolmurly), Kilmactranny, Co. Sligo. Kilmactranny is the name of the civil parish, Coolmurla also being located in the Catholic parish of Geevagh, comprised of the civil parishes of Killadoon and Shancough, as well as Kilmactranny.

Note: I have seen Patrick's name spelled as Mullany as well as Mullaney. His family appears to have gone by the name Mullaney.

Eleanor (Ellen) O'HARA [Parents] was born about 23 Apr 1849 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 23 Apr 1849. She died on 2 Jul 1928 in Cartrontaylor, Ballintogher, Co. Sligo. She was buried in Kilmactranny Cemetery, Co. Sligo. Eleanor married Patrick MULLANY/MULLANEY on 13 Jan 1867 in probably Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Ellen's baptism were Edward Walpole and Mary Anne O'Hara. Ellen's name on her baptismal certificate is Helena.

According to her marriage certificate, Ellen's residence prior to her marriage was Cleigna in Cootehall.

From her newspaper death notice we know that Ellen died at the home of her daughter Bridget Kelly in Cartrontaylor.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Michael O'Hara and Maria O'Hara.

They had the following children.

F i Mary Jane MULLANEY was born on 5 Aug 1868. She died on 25 Oct 1940.
  M ii
John MULLANEY was born about 1870 in Coolmurla, Geevagh, Co. Sligo. He died in 1952 in Co. Sligo.
M iii Joseph MULLANEY was born about 1872. He died on 29 Oct 1943.
  F iv
Eleanor MULLANEY was born about 1872 in Coolmurla, Geevagh, Co. Sligo.
  F v
Catherine MULLANEY was born about 1877 in Coolmurla, Geevagh, Co. Sligo.

M viii Denis MULLANEY was born on 15 Jan 1884. He died in 1928.
M ix Laurence MULLANEY was born on 15 Jan 1884. He died in 1969.
F x Bridget Mary MULLANEY was born about 1885. She died on 25 Apr 1967.
  F xi
Margaret MULLANEY was born about 1888 in Coolmurla, Geevagh, Co. Sligo.

Roger (Rossy) O'HARA [Parents] was born about 17 Feb 1844 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 17 Feb 1844. He died on 24 Feb 1928 in Cloongreahan, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Roger married Elizabeth (Lizzie) LAVIN on 29 Jun 1868 in Kilmore Chapel, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Rossy's baptism were Roger O'Hara and Maria Moran.

Rossy, aged 57, is listed in the 1901 census with his wife, Elizabeth and their 19-year-old son Patrick in the townland of Cloongreaghan in Cootehall. He is listed again in the 1911 census with Elizabeth, Patrick and a 16-year-old niece named Maggie McLoughlin. According to the 1911 census, Rossy and Elizabeth had been married for 43 years and had six children born alive, all six of whom were still alive at the time of the census. This does not tie in with information I received from a family source who told me that Rossy and Elizabeth had seven children (no names were known).

According to Rossy's death record he died at the age of 75. However it appears he was actually 84 years old.

Elizabeth (Lizzie) LAVIN [Parents] was born in 1846 in Ardgallagher, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon. She died on 15 Nov 1919 in Glooria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Elizabeth married Roger (Rossy) O'HARA on 29 Jun 1868 in Kilmore Chapel, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon.

Lizzie was a sister of Patrick Lavin of Ardgallagher, Kilmore who married Rossy's niece Jane O'Hara.

According to the 1911 census, Lizzie and her husband, Rossy, had six children born alive, all six of whom were alive at the time of the census.

They had the following children.

F i Mary Jane O'HARA was born on 15 May 1869. She died in Oct 1944.
  F ii
Anne O'HARA was born about 8 Feb 1872 in Glooria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 8 Feb 1872.

Sponsors at Anne's baptism were William O'Hara and Brigid Stapleton.

It appears Anne married a Chris Bury or a T. Christie. We know this from her mother's obituary in The Roscommon Herald of 29 November 1919 in which the list of chief mourners included "...Mrs. John McGrath (Elphin), Mrs. Chris Bury and Mrs. Patrick Flynn, Cootehall (daughters): Mr. John McGrath, Mr. T. Christie and Mr. Patrick Flynn (sons-in-law).... Austin McGrath and Gerald Flynn (grandsons), Eileen Flynn (granddaughter)" and we know that Anne's's sisters Mary and Elizabeth were married to John McGrath and Patrick Flynn respectively. Is it possible that Chris Bury and T. Christie are the same person (assuming a typographical error in the obituary)?
M iii William James O'HARA was born on 9 Jul 1873. He died on 26 Nov 1931.
F iv Elizabeth O'HARA was born on 21 Jan 1878.
  M v
Patrick O'HARA was born on 5 Oct 1881 in Glooria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Patrick farmed in Cloongreahan, Cootehall.
  M vi
Joseph O'HARA was born on 21 Oct 1883 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died on 30 Apr 1912 in Philadelphia. He was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Philadelphia.

Joseph emigrated to the United States in 1911. He was accompanied by an Annie O'Hara (relationship to Joseph not known) who was aged about 60, and arrived in Philadelphia on 28 March 1911 and were met by a Hubert O'Hara, a first cousin of Joseph's. I am wondering if Annie was a daughter of Roger O'Hara and Maria Murray and a first cousin once removed of Joseph's who we know emigrated to the U.S.

Joseph died about a year after arriving in the States aged just 28.

Luke LAVIN/LAVAN was born about 1796. He died on 24 Sep 1864 in Ardgallagher, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon. Luke married Brigid STAPLETON on 11 Aug 1839 in Dangan Chapel, Kilmore.

Other marriages:
DONNELLAN/DONLAN, Johanna/Joann

Brigid STAPLETON [Parents] was born in Kilmore, Co. Roscommon. She died. Brigid married Luke LAVIN/LAVAN on 11 Aug 1839 in Dangan Chapel, Kilmore.

They had the following children.

Patrick's surname was sometimes spelled as Lavan. The two are interchangeable. He left his wife, Jane, £290 4s 2d in his will.

Jane O'HARA [Parents] was born about 14 Jun 1848 in Cloongreahen, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 14 Jun 1848. She died on 2 Jun 1922 in Kilglass, Rooskey, Co. Roscommon. Jane married Patrick LAVIN on 14 Jun 1869 in Cootehall Church.

Sponsors at Jane's baptism were William O'Hara and Brigid Mulloy.

Jane died at the home of her daughter Emily Gearty in Kilglass, Rooskey.

More detail on the descendants of Jane and her husband, Patrick Lavin, is available in "Ancestral Quest, Tracing my Ancestors in Ireland", a book published in 2008 by Patrick Lavin, a grandson of Patrick and Jane. The book also contains information on the Sligo origins of Jane's O'Hara ancestors who settled in Cootehall about 1800.

They had the following children.

M i Mary LAVIN was born on 13 Jul 1870.
M ii Luke Joseph LAVIN was born on 18 Feb 1872. He died on 10 Apr 1955.
M iii Lawrence LAVIN was born on 16 Jan 1874. He died in 1940.

M xi Francis (Frank) Xavier LAVIN was born in May 1890. He died on 1 Apr 1935.
  M xii
Kieran Patrick (Fr. Damian) LAVIN was born on 3 May 1892 in Ardgallagher, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon. He died on 21 Oct 1918 in Ardgallagher, Kilmore, Co. Roscommon.

Kieran became a priest, taking the name Fr. Damian. Following his ordination he went to England where he carried out missionary work. He was only 26 years of age when he died of complications resulting from diabetes. Just three weeks earlier he had married his nephew Charles Lavin and Mary Anne McDermott.

Laurence O'HARA [Parents] was born in 1821 in Glooria, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He died on 7 Apr 1904 in Cloongreahen, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Laurence married Catherine MOLLOY on 16 Feb 1846 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

Laurence was renowned locally for his great strength.

Catherine MOLLOY was born about 1821. She died on 11 Apr 1906 in Cloongreahen, Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. Catherine married Laurence O'HARA on 16 Feb 1846 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon.

According to a public family tree on the Ancestry website, Catherine's parents were Charles Mulloy/Molloy and Mary Kate McLaughlin who lived in Cryanstown, Knockvicar, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. However I have not been able to verify this.

At the time of the death of their daughter Maria in 1894 (aged 47) Maria and her husband, Laurence, were living in Donald's Hill in Cootehall.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were Michael Brother (was 'Brother' a surname or does it signify that Michael was a brother of Laurence?) and Catherine Mulloy.

They had the following children.

F i Maria O'HARA was born about 28 Dec 1846. She died in Aug 1894.
F ii Jane O'HARA was born about 14 Jun 1848. She died on 2 Jun 1922.

M vii Laurence O'HARA was born about 20 Dec 1859. He died after Oct 1903.
M viii Joseph O'HARA was born about 14 Mar 1862.

William MAXWELL [Parents] was born in 1820. He died on 6 Jun 1892 in Brackloon, Tumna, Co. Roscommon. William married Mary O'HARA on 26 Jan 1852.

Most of William's siblings emigrated to the United States.

Maxwell researchers may be interested in information received from Ellen Brewin in Illinois on her Maxwell ancestors. Ellen's great-great-grandmother was Catherine Maxwell who was born around 1823. Catherine married a Michael Coleman in 1841 in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. She died around 1888 and is buried, along with Michael, in Estersnow Cemetery, not far from Boyle. Their descendants who emigrated went mainly to Taunton and Leominster, both in Massachusetts. Ellen wonders if her ancestors were connected to the Maxwell family who are mentioned in David Thomson's book, 'Woodbrook', an account of the author's time as tutor in the 1930s to the Kirkwood children of the Woodbrook estate, located between Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon. If so then Ellen's ancestors were related to William Maxwell above as it was William's son Michael who worked for the Kirkwoods and whose family is mentioned in the book.

Mary O'HARA [Parents] was born in 1831 in Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. She died after 2 Apr 1911 in probably Brackloon, Tumna, Co. Roscommon. Mary married William MAXWELL on 26 Jan 1852.

Mary is listed in the 1901 census as a 75-year-old widow living in Brackloon in the parish of Tumna, Co. Roscommon. Also listed with her is her 10-year-old granddaughter Mary, whose surname could be Kermoy or Kennedy or Keveney. Mary is listed alone at the same address in the 1911 census.
