Nicholas TREACY (caution: not verified) [Parents] was born about 1805 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary. He died on 25 Mar 1848. He was buried in Kilfeacle Cemetery, Co. Tipperary. Nicholas married Margaret DARMODY on 26 Feb 1838.

Nicholas was definitely related to John, but it is pure speculation that he was John's brother. For the following reason it is a possibility that they were brothers:

It is known that John's grandchildren had a cousin of a similar age (though not a first cousin) called Nicholas Treacy. Nicholas (John's brother-presumed) had a grandson called Nicholas, so it is possible that Nicholas, the grandchild, was a second cousin of John's grandchildren. It is therefore possible that Nicholas and John were brothers.

There is only one Nicholas Treacy listed in Griffith's Valuation (1851) for Soloheadbeg. It is probable that this is our Nicholas.

Margaret DARMODY [Parents] was born on 14 Jul 1820 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary. She died on 1 Dec 1905 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary. She was buried in probably Kilfeacle Cemetery, Co. Tipperary. Margaret married Nicholas TREACY (caution: not verified) on 26 Feb 1838.

Witnesses to the marriage of Nicholas and Margaret were John Ryan and Patrick Darmody.

They had the following children.

  F i
Catherine TREACY was born about 11 Jul 1840 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary. She was christened on 11 Jul 1840 in Solohead, Co. Tipperary.

Sponsors at Catherine's christening were Michael Treacy and Margaret Darmody.
M ii Thomas TREACY was born about 6 Mar 1842. He died on 16 Feb 1914.
F iii Mary (May) TREACY was born about 12 Jul 1844.
  F iv
Johanna TREACY was born about 1848 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary. She died on 7 Sep 1934 in Soloheadbeg, Co. Tipperary. She was buried in Kilfeacle, Co. Tipperary.

Johanna never married. It is probable that she lived with her brother, Thomas, and his family in Soloheadbeg because she is listed (as single) in both the 1901 and 1911 census returns for his household. In the 1901 return, her age is given as 50 (born c.1850), but in 1911, her age is given as 65 (born c. 1845). There is further confusion regarding Johanna's age because the Johanna Treacy buried in the Treacy family plot in Kilfeacle, which is likely to be our Johanna above, died in 1934 aged 73 (born c. 1861).  Therefore, because Johann'a father died in March 1848, we will assume that she was actually born about 1848. Unfortunately no baptismal record has been located for her.

James GORDON [Parents] was born about 1820 in possibly Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He died on 1 Feb 1907 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. James married Maria COUGHLIN on 9 Jan 1865 in Ballymote, Co. Sligo.

James was a publican and shopkeeper in the town of Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

It is not known James was related to the Gordon family of Kilgarriff, Co. Roscommon, whose family history also appears on these pages. I have come across no evidence to suggest a blood connection although James's granddaughter Denise is listed as a cousin among the mourners at the funeral of Thomas Gordon (1880-1937) of the above family in Thomas's obituary in The Leitrim Observer of 3 April 1937.

Maria COUGHLIN [Parents] was born about 1847 in Ballymote, Co. Sligo. She died on 5 Jun 1905 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. Maria married James GORDON on 9 Jan 1865 in Ballymote, Co. Sligo.

Maria died of heart failure in her fifties.

They had the following children.

F i Elizabeth (Lizzie, Eliza) GORDON was born on 12 Sep 1866.
  F ii
Maria Theresa GORDON was born on 7 Mar 1869 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 10 Mar 1869 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.
  M iii
Thomas Andrew GORDON was born on 25 Nov 1871 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 29 Nov 1871 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.
  F iv
Jane GORDON was born about 27 Dec 1874 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 27 Dec 1874 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at Jane's baptism were Thomas Greevy and Mary Anne Bligh.
  M v
James GORDON was born about 16 Sep 1877 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 16 Sep 1877 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Sponsors at James' baptism were Pat Horan and Winnie Gordon.
  F vi
Margaret Kate GORDON was born about 7 Nov 1880 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She was christened on 7 Nov 1880 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died on 7 Mar 1887 in Ballymote, Co. Sligo.

Sponsors at Margaret Kate's baptism were Tom Delaney and Kate Coughlin.

Margaret died of croup at the age of six at the home of her grandfather, Bartholemew Coughlan, in Ballymote.
M vii John (Jack) Patrick GORDON was born about 3 Jun 1883. He died on 24 Aug 1934.

Bartholemew COUGHLIN was born in possibly Ballymote, Co. Sligo. He died on 20 Mar 1892 in probably Ballymote, Co. Sligo. Bartholemew married Margaret 'UNKNOWN'.

Bartholemew was a shopkeeper and farmer in Ballymote.

Margaret 'UNKNOWN' died. Margaret married Bartholemew COUGHLIN.

They had the following children.

F i Maria COUGHLIN was born about 1847. She died on 5 Jun 1905.

John (Jack) Patrick GORDON [Parents] was born about 3 Jun 1883 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He was christened on 3 Jun 1883 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He died on 24 Aug 1934 in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. He was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. John married Anne (Annie) MCDONNELL on 16 Aug 1908 in University Church, Dublin.

The only sponsor listed at Jack's baptism was Thomas Gordon. Jack took over the running of the family's shop in Ballaghaderreen, James Gordon & Son, from his father. The business prospered and Jack left an estate worth £31,578 (according to the The Connaught Tribune edition of 15 August 1936).

Jack died, aged 51, at Ross's Hotel in Dun Laoghaire where he and his wife, Annie, and their daughter Denise had been staying for a number of weeks. Denise would have been about 10 years of age. Jack had had a stroke about a year beforehand and had been in poor health since then. His condition had seriously deteriorated about a week before his death.

The Ballaghaderreen shop continued in business for another 20 years and was sold in 1955, along with farmland outside Ballaghaderreen.

Note: It is thought that Jack's Gordon ancestors may have moved to Ballaghaderreen from Strokestown, also in Co. Roscommon.

Anne (Annie) MCDONNELL [Parents] was born about 2 Mar 1879 in Charlestown, Co. Mayo. She was christened on 4 Mar 1879 in Kilbeagh, Co. Mayo. She died on 10 May 1964 in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. Anne married John (Jack) Patrick GORDON on 16 Aug 1908 in University Church, Dublin.

Very sadly, all eight children of Annie and her husband, Jack, died as children or young adults. According to family sources, Annie and Jack were first cousins and this was the reason for their children's poor health and early deaths. However, this does not tie in with other information I have gathered about the family: Jack's parents' surnames were Gordon and Coughlin and Annie's parents' surnames were McDonnell and Fitzgerald so they could not have been first cousins. However, Annie's maternal grandmother's surname was Gordon so perhaps Annie and Jack were second cousins.

Later in her life, after the deaths of Jack and their children, Annie devoted herself to financing the education of young men who wished to become priests.

They had the following children.

  F i
Kathleen GORDON was born on 1 Jul 1909 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1914 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Kathleen died at the age of about four.
  M ii
John (Jay) P. GORDON was born in 1910 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He died on 8 Nov 1933 in Albury, New South Wales. He was buried in probably New South Wales.

Jay emigrated to England and then, in 1932, he moved to Australia. The Ancestry.com Outward Passenger Lists for the UK tell us that Jay left London for Sydney by steamship on either 18 March or 15 April 1932 (there is a record for him for both voyages). He is described on the passenger lists as a shop assistant. Nineteen months later, in Albury, NSW, Jay took his own life by swallowing Lysol. He was only 23 years old.

  M iii
James (Jim) GORDON was born in 1911 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He died on 16 Feb 1917 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Jim died of acute bronchitis at the age of just five.
  M iv
Michael GORDON was born in 1913 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He died on 16 May 1917 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. He was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Michael died of acute bronchitis at the age of four, exactly three months after the death of his five-year-old brother, Jim, of the same illness.
  F v
Eithne GORDON was born in 1918 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1918 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Eithne died in infancy.
  F vi
Mary GORDON was born in 1920 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1925 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Mary was only about five years of age when she died.
  F vii
Angela GORDON was born in 1923 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1924 in probably Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She was buried in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Angela died at the age of about one.
  F viii
Denise Bride GORDON was born in 1924 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She died on 9 Mar 1943 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon. She was buried on 11 Mar 1943 in Kilcolman Old Cemetery, Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Denise, who was only 18 years of age when she died, was the last surviving child of Jack and Annie. Despite suffering ill health throughout her life, she was able to attend school at Loreto Abbey in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin and also became a skilled horserider.

Of Jack and Annie's eight children, six died before they reached the age of seven; Jay, who lived the longest, died at the age of 23.

Michael Alexander MCDONNELL [Parents] was born about 1850 in Kilmovee, Co. Mayo. He died on 12 Jun 1924 in probably Charlestown, Co. Mayo. Michael married Catherine (Kate) FITZGERALD on 15 May 1875 in Kilbaha, Swinford, Co. Mayo.

Michael owned a hardware store on The Square in Charlestown, Co. Roscommon, purchased from his wife's family. According to the 1901 census he was a "general merchant", and the 1911 census tells us that he was s "publican and merchant".

Following Michael's death there appears to have been a dispute over his will (dated February 1910). I have seen references to court proceedings in 1927 and 1928 between the plaintiff, James McDonnell (presumably Michael's son) and defendants Ellen McDonnell and Annie Gordon (presumably his daughters). However, I have found no further details about the case.

Catherine (Kate) FITZGERALD [Parents] was born about 1853 in possibly Charlestown, Co. Mayo. She died before 30 Mar 1901. Catherine married Michael Alexander MCDONNELL on 15 May 1875 in Kilbaha, Swinford, Co. Mayo.

Kate's husband, Michael McDonnell, was a brother of Alexander McDonnell, the husband of her sister Mary.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were Alexander McDonnell and Johanna Coughlan.

They had the following children.

  F i
Ellen (Ellie) MCDONNELL was born on 11 May 1876 in Charlestown, Co. Mayo. She died on 25 Jan 1937 in 94 Lower Leeson St., Dublin. She was buried in Carracastle Cemetery, Co. Mayo.

Ellie, who lived in either Charlestown or Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, never married. She died of acute pancreatitis in a nursing home in Dublin at the age of 60.
  M ii
James (Jimmy) Patrick MCDONNELL was born on 21 Mar 1877 in Charlestown, Co. Mayo. He was christened on 24 Mar 1877 in Kilbeagh, Co. Mayo. He died in 1945 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

Jimmy was a shop owner in Charlestown. Perhaps he had inherited his father's business. He died suddenly aged 60 at the home of his sister Annie (Gordon). We do not know if he ever married.
F iii Anne (Annie) MCDONNELL was born about 2 Mar 1879. She died on 10 May 1964.
  F iv
Bridget (Bea) MCDONNELL was born about 1883 in Charlestown, Co. Mayo.

It is believed that Bea entered the convent.
  M v
John (Jack) Joseph MCDONNELL was born on 16 Apr 1884 in Charlestown, Co. Mayo. He died on 10 May 1900 in Denver, Colorado. He was buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Wheat Ridge, Colorado.

It appears Jack was sent by his family to Sacred Heard School (renamed Regis University in 1921) in Denver in 1899 at the age of about 15. Sacred Heart was a Jesuit school and I am assuming he went there to study for the priesthood. According to diaries from the college from that time, Jack arrived with "weak lungs" and, sadly, died about a year later from a haemorrhage of the lungs. Death was apparently instantaneous. Jack was originally buried in the cemetery for Jesuit priests on the campus of Sacred Heart School, the only student to have been buried there, but the remains from this cemetery were later moved (in 1958) to Mount Olivet.

While we do not know exactly when Jack's mother, Kate, died, it is believed to have been around 1899. It is possible that this, along with perhaps a belief that the air in Denver would benefit his lungs, were factors in the decision to send Jack to Colorado.

The school register shows that Jack's fees were paid by an M. Fitzgerald. Could M. have been Jack's uncle Michael Fitzgerald, or Michael's half-brother Martin? Bothe Michael and Martin ran a successful distillery business in Dublin and could probably have afforded the school fees. The register gives M. Fitzgerald's address as Alta Vista Hotel, Colorado Springs (60 miles from Denver), indicating he was resident elsewhere.

Dominick BLIGH [Parents] was born in 1833 in probably Castlerea, Co . Roscommon. He was christened on 8 Mar 1833 in Castlerea, Co . Roscommon. He died on 29 Apr 1920 in Cloonkeen West, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. Dominick married Anne GORDON (caution: not verified) on 17 Feb 1876 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

My late father-in-law, Cormac Gordon (son of Cormac Gordon and Mary Morahan), told me around 2001 that his Gordon family was distantly related to a Bligh family from Castlerea who were "egglers" (they bought eggs from farmers' wives and sold them on), but he wasn't sure of the exact relationship. It is quite possible that Dominick above was a member of this family.

Anne GORDON (caution: not verified) [Parents] was born about 1861 in probably Aughalustia, Co. Roscommon. She died in possibly 12 Feb 1937 in possibly Cloonkeen, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. Anne married Dominick BLIGH on 17 Feb 1876 in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

An Anne Gordon from Aughalustia, daughter of a Michael Gordon, married a Dominick Bligh from Castlerea in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon in 1876. While I have no evience that Anne was a daughter of Michael Gordon and Anne Finn, I think it likely she was.

They had the following children.

James BLIGH died before 17 Feb 1876. James married Mary CONRY.

Mary CONRY died. Mary married James BLIGH.

They had the following children.

M i Dominick BLIGH was born in 1833. He died on 29 Apr 1920.

Hilda HUTCHCROFT was born on 12 Sep 1903. She died in 1969 in Lancashire. Hilda married John Joseph BLIGH in 1931 in St. Mary's Church, Dukinfield, Cheshire.

Given the gap between the births of Terence and Michael (see below), it seems probable John and Hilda had other children, born between 1935 and 1943.
