Patrick (Paddy) HANLEY died before Jul 1998. Patrick married Veronica (Vera) MORAHAN about 1946 in Pro-Cathedral, Marlborough St. Dublin.

Paddy, who was from Athlone, Co. Westmeath, was an engineer with Dublin County Council. He and Vera lived on Vernon Avenue, Clontarf, Dublin before moving to Cherrygarth, Mount Merrion, Dublin. After Vera was widowed she moved to Donnybrook, Dublin.

Veronica (Vera) MORAHAN [Parents] was born in 1921 in possibly Cloonfeacle, Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon. She died in Jul 1998 in Dublin. She was buried in Shanganagh Cemetery, Dublin. Veronica married Patrick (Paddy) HANLEY about 1946 in Pro-Cathedral, Marlborough St. Dublin.

Michael MAHONY [Parents] was born about 1849 in Ballyknockane, Mourneabbey, Co . Cork. He died on 6 Jan 1919 in 54 Commons Road, Cork. Michael married Hanora (Nora) SULLIVAN on 3 May 1874 in Analeentha Church, Mourneabbey, Co. Cork.

Michael farmed in Ballyknockane before moving to Cork city between 1874 and 1876. He was working as a labourer at the time of the birth of his daughter, Ellen, in Cork city in 1876 but was eventually employed as a railway porter.

According to his death record Michael died at 54 Commons Road in Cork. We know he lived for many years at 65 Commons Road, so had he moved to no. 54 at some point after the death of his wife, Nora? Or is there an error on the death record? The informant on the death record is a Nora Mahony of 44(?) St. Luke's [followed by a word that looks like "frop"], Cork. Was Nora an unmarried daughter or a daughter-in-law? The cause of death was "acute oedema of lungs, 3 days".

Hanora (Nora) SULLIVAN [Parents] was born about 1848 in Caheraveelane, Kilshannig; or Glynn, Mourneabbey. She died on 6 Jun 1902 in 65 Commons Road, Cork. She was buried on 8 Jun 1902 in Donoughmore Cemetery, Co. Cork. Hanora married Michael MAHONY on 3 May 1874 in Analeentha Church, Mourneabbey, Co. Cork.

Nora and her husband, Michael, moved from Mourneabbey to Cork city where they lived at 65 Commons Road.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were Michael Sullivan and Patrick Mahony.

They had the following children.

F i Catherine (Kate) MAHONY was born on 10 May 1874. She died on 12 Feb 1933.
  F ii
Ellen MAHONY was born on 20 Aug 1876 in 1 Heyland's Lane, Cork.

We know of Ellen's existence from the 1901 and 1911 censuses which has Ellen listed with her parents (1901) and her widowered father (1911). Ellen and her father appear to have moved from 65 Commons Road, their home prior to the death of Ellen's mother in 1902, to 54 Commons Road by the time of the 1911 census.

An Ellen O'Mahony, an unmarried shopkeeper, died at 31 Washington St. West in Cork on 8 June 1940 aged 64. This ties in with our Ellen's date of birth but I have no evidence to prove that this is our Ellen. The informant on the death record of the Ellen from Washington St. was a niece, Maureen O'Mahony, of the same address.

Timothy LYNCH [Parents] was born about 1870 in Co. Cork. He died on 21 Feb 1952 in 16 Langford Row, Cork. Timothy married Catherine (Kate) MAHONY on 30 Apr 1898 in Cork Cathedral.

Timothy was a railway porter. His address at the time of his marriage was 96 Clarence St., Cork, and at the time of the 1901 census he and his wife, Kate, and their family were living on Great Britain St., Blackpool, Cork. At the time of the death of their infant son Jeremiah in 1906 the family appears to have been still living on Great Britain St. as Jeremiah was born and died at no. 71 Great Britain St. However the address of Kate, who was the informant named on Jeremiah's death certificate, is given as 47 Kellehers Buildings, Cork. By the time of the 1911 census the family home was in Kilbarry, St. Mary's, Cork.

Timothy died at the home of his daughter Nora (Donnelly).

Catherine (Kate) MAHONY [Parents] was born on 10 May 1874 in Ballyknockane, Mourneabbey, Co . Cork. She died on 12 Feb 1933 in 15 Kilbarry Cottages, Cork. Catherine married Timothy LYNCH on 30 Apr 1898 in Cork Cathedral.

It appears Kate was born a week after her parents' marriage.

Kate's address at the time of her own marriage in 1898 was 65 Commons Road, Cork.

Kate died of "auricullar fibrillation" aged 58.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were John Lynch and Nora Healy.

They had the following children.

  F i
Ellen Mary LYNCH was born on 4 Feb 1899 in 32 Great Britain St., Cork. She died in probably before 30 Mar 1901 in probably Cork city.

The 1911 census tells us that Ellen's parents had six children born alive, four of whom were still living. We know that their son Jeremiah had died in 1906, and as Ellen is not listed with her family in the 1901 census I am presuming that she had died by then and that she was the second child who had died. The Civil Registration Deaths Index on the Ancestry website has an Ellen Mary Lynch who died aged less than one year in the Cork registration district in the third quarter of 1899. However the corresponding death record does not appear on the Irish Genealogy site so I have been unable to view the record to verify that the index entry refers to our Ellen above, although I think it likely that it does.
  F ii
Mary LYNCH was born on 14 Dec 1900 in The Lying-In Hospital, Cork.

Mary's birth certificate gives her name as Nora Christina but it is definitely Mary who is listed in the 1901 census as the three-month-old daughter of Timothy and Kate.
  M iii
John LYNCH was born on 12 Jun 1902 in 71 Great Britain St., Cork.
  F iv
Julia LYNCH was born on 19 Feb 1905 in The Lying-In Hospital, Cork.

I think it likely Julia married a Patrick Kennedy as a marriage record has been found on the Irish Genealogy website (www.irishgenealogy.ie) for a Julia Lynch, daughter of Timothy Lynch, who married Patrick Kennedy, a soldier, on 22 January 1944 in the Church of St. Joseph in Mayfield, Cork. Witnesses were John Hickey and Mary Lynch (Julia had a sister named MAry).
  M v
Jeremiah LYNCH was born on 21 Mar 1906 in 71 Great Britain St., Cork. He died on 10 May 1906 in 71 Great Britain St., Cork.

Jeremiah died at the age of seven weeks of "debility from birth".
F vi Hanora (Nora) LYNCH was born on 8 Jul 1910. She died after 15 Apr 1990.
  F vii
Anne (Hannah) Christina (Sr. Columbanus) LYNCH was born on 24 Dec 1913 in 15 Kilbarry Cottages, Blackpool, Cork. She died on 15 Apr 1990 in Galway.

Hannah (Sr. Columbanus) entered the convent of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles (OLA) in 1934 and was professed two years later. She worked in Egypt, Gold Coast (now Ghana), England and Ireland. Sr. Columbanus spent her retirement at the OLA convent in Castlemacgarret, Claremorris, Co. Mayo, where the order has a home for the elderly. Hannah died at the Regional Hospital in Galway.

Thomas (Tom) Frances DOODY [Parents] was born on 13 Jan 1903 in 117 George's St., Cork. He died on 30 Nov 1953 in 8 Sorrento Terrace, Dalkey, Dublin. He was buried in St. Finbarr's Cemetery, Cork. Thomas married Gertrude Marjorie Payne (Marjorie) DAY in 1932 in Hammersmith, London.

Tom became a doctor, graduating from UCC in 1925. He then moved to London and it is known that in 1939 he was living at 854 Lea Bridge Road in Leyton. Not long afterwards he returned with his young family to Co. Cork where he ran a practice in Ballymartle and Carrigaline before moving to Crosshaven around 1943. The family later moved to Dublin where they lived at 8 Sorrento Terrace, Dalkey. Tom died in 1953 aged only 50.

Gertrude Marjorie Payne (Marjorie) DAY was born on 6 May 1905 in Gloucester. She died on 20 Oct 1989 in probably Dublin. Gertrude married Thomas (Tom) Frances DOODY in 1932 in Hammersmith, London.

Marjorie was a teacher. In the 1939 Register Marjorie is described as "teacher (secondary) BA diploma education UK Bristol, English, History subsidiary. At present supply teacher for West Ham education authorities in Shalbourne". She was living at the time in Shalbourne, Marlborough, Wiltshire.

Marjorie and her husband, Tom, and their family moved to Tom's native Co. Cork with their family in the early 1940s. They later moved to Dublin where they lived at 8 Sorrento Terrace, Dalkey. At some point after Tom's death in 1953 Marjorie moved to Grange Court, Rockfort Avenue, Dalkey.

They had the following children.

M iii Michael DOODY died on 2 May 2012.

Thomas LYONS died. Thomas married Ellen GRADY.

Ellen GRADY was born about 1844 in Leitrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Ellen married Thomas LYONS.

They had the following children.

M i Daniel (Dan) LYONS was born about 20 Jan 1865. He died on 8 Dec 1944.
  M ii
Thomas LYONS was born about 1886 in Derry, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

David KELLY [Parents] was born about 1855 in Co. Limerick. He died on 24 May 1934 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. He was buried in Darragh Cemetery, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. David married Johanna (Hannah) DOODY on 21 Jun 1892 in Galbally, Co. Limerick.

A David Kelly, son of David Kelly and Bridget Connery, was baptised in Glenroe, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick on 29 October 1854. As Glenroe is adjacent to Darraghmore, where David above farmed, it could be that the David who was baptised in Glenroe is our David.

According to the 1911 census, David and his wife, Hannah, had been married for 19 years and had seven children born alive, all of whom were still alive at the time of the census. They went on to have an eighth child in 1913. Three of the eight died quite young but we know very little about the remaining five, apart from their only son, David, although I was told by a cousin several years ago that David and Hannah had grandchildren who lived in England.

David died of "acute gastritis", according to his death certificate.

Note: I have come across Darraghmore spelled as Darragh More, and Kilfinane spelled as Kilfinnane.

Johanna (Hannah) DOODY [Parents] was born on 10 Feb 1867 in Ardnamoher, Galbally, Co.Limerick. She was christened on 11 Feb 1867 in Galbally, Co. Limerick. She died on 8 Mar 1958 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. Johanna married David KELLY on 21 Jun 1892 in Galbally, Co. Limerick.

Sponsors at Hannah's baptism were Maurice Rowan and Ellen Donohoe. Hannah's baptismal date of 11 Feb 1867 may not be correct because the next oldest sibling, Ellen, was baptised only three months before. Or maybe it is Ellen's date of baptism that is incorrect.

Hannah was 91 years of age when she died.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were Ellie Doody (presumably Hannah's sister) and John Connory (sic).

They had the following children.

  F i
Bridget (Bedina) KELLY was born about 1893 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick.

Bedina should not be confused with another Bedina Kelly who was born in 1893 in the townland of Spittle (not far from Darraghmore) to John and Ellen Kelly. Both Bedinas are listed in the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Given that each family had a daughter by the quite unusual name of Bedina (a form of Bridget) and the name David seems to have been traditional in both families, it is possible the two Kelly families were related.

Unfortunately we can find no trace of our Bedina (i.e. from Darraghmore) after the 1911 census. The Bedina from Spittle married Edmund Condon of Glenroe, Co. Limerick in Cork on 7 September 1922. They later emigrated to the United States and raised a family in Chicago.
  F ii
Johanna (Hannah) KELLY was born on 29 Jun 1895 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. She died on 7 Jun 1923 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick.

Hannah died at the age of 27 of tuberculosis. She was unmarried.
  F iii
Elizabeth (Lizzie) KELLY was born on 12 Feb 1897 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick.
  F iv
Mary Ann KELLY was born on 13 Jan 1899 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick.
  F v
Catherine (Kathleen) KELLY was born on 26 Oct 1899 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. She died on 1 Jan 1939 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick.

Kathleen died at the age of 39 of tuberculosis from which she had been suffering for 10 years. She was unmarried.

Note: Kathleen's death certificate gives her age at death as 33.
  F vi
Helena KELLY was born on 12 Oct 1902 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. She died on 27 Feb 1915 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick.

Helena died at the age of 12 of "Influenza (14 days), Tabes mesenterica (2 months)", tabes mesenterica being a form a tuberculosis.

David KELLY was born on 17 May 1905 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. He died in possibly 24 Jul 1983 in Main St., Glanworth, Co. Cork. He was buried in St. Dominic's Cemetery, Glanworth, Co. Cork.

It is likely that David, being the only son, inherited the family farm in Darraghmore. If so, it appears he sold it in 1953 as newspaper advertisements from that year tell us that a David Kelly was putting his Darraghmore farm up for auction. The property comprised 61 acres and 15 perches as well as a residence and outhouses.

A newspaper death notice has been located for a David Kelly of Main St., Glanworth, Co. Cork, fomerly of Darraghmore, who died on 24 July 1983. He was "deeply regretted by his sister (sisters in other death notices), nephew, niece, relatives and friends." I think it likely that this is our David above. If so, then it appears he never married. A notice thanking those who sympathised with the family following David's death was published in The Irish Examiner of 10 September 1983 by David's "sister, brother-in-law, niece and nephew", suggesting David had in fact just one surviving sister at the time of his death and that the niece and nephew mentioned in the death notice were the children of this sister. Unfortunately no names were provided so we do not know which of David's sisters this notice refers to.

Margaret Mary KELLY was born on 23 Oct 1913 in Darraghmore, Kilfinane, Co. Limerick. She died.
