The Listowel Connection website tells us that Thomas was from Co. Monaghan and that he was the "brave United Irishman” from the well-known song The Boys of Wexford who married Jane Foulkes, “the captain’s daughter, the captain of the Yeos”. We are also told that "if local lore is to be believed,[Thomas and Jane] made their way to Kerry after the disaster of Vinegar Hill" and that they are buried in the Hegarty grave in Kilsynan Cemetery.

Jane FFOULKES died on 7 Dec 1840 in Ballyduhig, Listowel, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Kilshenane (Kilsynan) Cemetery, Irremore, Co. Kerry. Jane married Thomas MCKENNA.

  M i Thomas MCKENNA died on 16 Jan 1870.

Thomas MCKENNA [Parents] was born in Ballyduhig, Listowel, Co. Kerry. He died on 16 Jan 1870 in Ballyduhig, Listowel, Co. Kerry. He was buried in Kilshenane (Kilsynan) Cemetery, Irremore, Co. Kerry. Thomas married Ann (Annie) THORNTON.

Ann (Annie) THORNTON died on 3 May 1895 in Ballyduhig, Listowel, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Kilshenane (Kilsynan) Cemetery, Irremore, Co. Kerry. Ann married Thomas MCKENNA.

Annie may have had a connection to the Cunningham family of Irremore, Listowel and Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. The obituary of John Cunningham of Listowel (c.1791-1887) states that Bessie Troy, who was a daughter of Annie's, was John's niece, indicating that Annie was John's sister, which cannot be the case given Annie's surname. Perhaps Annie was a more distant relative of John's, or perhaps the connection, if any, was through Annie's husband, Thomas McKenna.

They had the following children.

According to the 1901 census John, then aged 60, was an "imbecile" with a "weak mind".
