Maurice LEANE/LANE [Parents] was born about 8 Apr 1840 in Islandanny, Duagh, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 8 Apr 1840 in Duagh, Co. Kerry. He died in 1913 in Carlton, Victoria. Maurice married Bridget CONNOR in probably 18 October 1862 in Duagh, Co. Kerry.

Maurice's surname was also spelled as Leane (Leen and Leane appear to be interchangeable). He was from Sluicequarter, Duagh, Co. Kerry.

Apparently Maurice did not have his father's blessing to marry Bridget (Connor) but the couple did marry and emigrated to Australia shortly afterwards. Maurice worked as a "cab proprietor" there, according to the marriage certificate (1902) of his daughter Nora.

Bridget CONNOR was born in probably Rathoran, Kilmorna, Co. Kerry. She died in 1909 in Victoria, Australia. Bridget married Maurice LEANE/LANE in probably 18 October 1862 in Duagh, Co. Kerry.

Bridget was from Rathoran, Kilmorna, Co. Kerry. Rathoran is adjacent to the townland of Islandanny from where her husband, Maurice, came.

Marriage Notes:

I have been told that Maurice and Bridget were married in Duagh "around 1863" and that Maurice did not have his father's blessing for the marriage. Although no documentation for a marriage around this time between a Maurice Lane and a Bridget Connor can be found, a record has been located in the Duagh parish register for a Maurice Lane who married an Elizabeth Connor from Rathoran on 18 October 1862. I think it likely that this relates to the marriage of our Maurice and Bridget. Perhaps "Elizabeth" was incorrectly written in the register, or Bridget was her middle name. We do know that Maurice and Bridget left for Australia in 1863 and settled in the Carlton area of Melbourne.

Maurice was ordained a priest in Maynooth and around 1901 was sent to Melbourne, Australia. After two years in Melbourne he asked to be moved to Queensland for health reasons. He went on to serve in the diocese of Rockhampton, Queensland and was later appointed parish priest of Longreach, Queensland. He subsequently spent a number of years as parish priest of Ipswich Road in Brisbane before poor health necessitated a move to the drier climate of Roma, Queenland, but he was not in Roma long before he died at the age of 54.

M ix Morgan LANE was born about 16 Feb 1883. He died on 11 Feb 1969.

Edmund/Edward HUDSON (caution: not verified) [Parents] was born in probably about 1780s or 1790s in north Co. Kerry. He died in probably between 1851 and 1859 in probably Ballyeagh, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. Edmund/Edward married Mary GALVIN/GALLIVAN.

Please note that it has not been verified that Edmund (or Edward) was a brother of Richard, although he was a brother of Elizabeth. It was the opinion of Hudson researcher Bill Hudson of Florida that Edmund and Richard were brothers (as per his 2002 notes). This is certainly possible as they were definitely related and both were born around the same time.

Both Edmund above, whose family was probably Protestant, and Richard (whose family was definitely Protestant) married Catholics at a time when it was unusual to marry outside of one's faith. If Edmund and Richard were indeed brothers, it is not unreasonable to think it more likely that it was their father who married a Catholic rather than there being two converts among his children. In Bill's notes there is mention of a William Hudson who married a housemaid, which suggests a Protectant-Catholic union. Bill was unable to determine which William this may have been, but it is possible it was the father of Edmund and Richard (assuming they were brothers).

Edmund and his family lived in an area named Warren (which I believe to be part of the townland of Ballyeagh), Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.

Mary GALVIN/GALLIVAN was born in probably 1797 in probably north Co. Kerry. She died in probably 27 December 1877 in probably Ballyeagh, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. Mary married Edmund/Edward HUDSON (caution: not verified).

Mary and Edward may also have had a son named Richard but we have no documented evidence of his existence.

On 27 December 1877 an 80-year-old Mary Hudson, widow of a “labourer,” died in Ballybunion. This may have been our Mary above.

They had the following children.

F i Ellen HUDSON was born about 16 May 1821.
  M ii Edward HUDSON died.
  F iii Mary HUDSON died.
M iv William G. HUDSON was born about 9 Oct 1832. He died on 9 Dec 1901.
  F v
Elizabeth HUDSON was born about 2 Jul 1835 in Warren, Ballybunion, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 4 Jul 1835 in Ballybunion, Co. Kerry.

We have no further information on Elizabeth.
M vi Mortimer HUDSON was born about 4 Jan 1838. He died on 28 Mar 1884.
F vii Catherine (Kate) HUDSON was born about 7 May 1841. She died on 5 Oct 1888.

'unknown' CULHANE [Parents] was born in Barnigue, Carrigkerry, Athea, Co. Limerick. She died. 'unknown' married Roger BEHAN.

They had the following children.

  M i John BEHAN died.

John died at the age of about 50.

Mary MULVIHILL [Parents] was born in possibly about 1838 in probably Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 14 Sep 1878 in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Mary married John HANRAHAN on 12 Feb 1861 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Given the gap between the births of their first and second children listed below, I think it likely that Mary and John had another child - or perhaps two - in between.

Mary died at the age of 40 of "Stricture of Pylorus 3 years, Dilation of Stomach 2 years and 6 months". Her death left at least eight children between the ages of four and 16 orphaned.

Marriage Notes:

Tha address of both John and Mary on their marriage record is Gortdromasillihy.

They had the following children.

F i Johanna HANRAHAN was born about 20 Dec 1861. She died on 7 Jul 1926.
F ii Margaret HANRAHAN was born on 16 Apr 1865. She died on 17 Jan 1953.
  F iii
Catherine HANRAHAN was born in 1867 in The Hill, Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Going by Catherine's date of birth on her civil birth record (3 November 1867) she was born six months before her brother Patrick, for whom we have a (more reliable) baptismal record. I therefore think Catherine was born earlier in 1867.
M iv Patrick HANRAHAN was born about 1 May 1868.
  F v
Honora HANRAHAN was born on 5 Apr 1869 in The Hill, Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.
M vi Jeremiah HANRAHAN was born on 26 Apr 1871. He died on 5 Mar 1927.
  F vii
Mary HANRAHAN was born on 13 Dec 1872 in The Hill, Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

A Mary Hanrahan, aged 15, died on 8 April 1887 in Kilbaha, Moyvane (of "swelling of the knee, 18 months"). The informant on her death record is her brother John of Kilbaha. It is a possibility that this was Mary above as she would have been 15 in December 1887, had a brother named John, and Kilbaha is adjacent to Gortdromasillihy where our Mary was born. However, her brother John would have been only 12 years old on 8 April 1887 and is unlikely to have been the informant on the death record.
  M viii
John HANRAHAN was born on 25 Jul 1874 in The Hill, Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John was born six months after his father's death.
