All Families and Individuals

Thomas BUTLER [Parents] was born about 1810 in Dublin. He died on 8 Feb 1854 in 66 Drury Lane, Covent Garden, London. Thomas married Ellen BARTLETT in 1842 in Sutton Street Chapel, Strand, London.

Thomas was a musical instrument maker. Although it appears that Thomas was related to the family of George James Butler who ran a musical instrument making business in London, we have no proof of this. Although Thomas and George share a surname and were born in Dublin only 15 years apart, and both worked as musical instrument makers in the Covent Garden area of London, the only documented connection between them that we are aware of is that George's wife's name appears as the informant on Thomas's death certificate.

At the time of the 1851 census Thomas and his wife, Ellen, and their young family were living at 123 Duke St., Westminster, London. At the time of his death, just three years later at the age of about 44, his address was 66 Drury Lane, Covent Garden.

Ellen BARTLETT was born about 1820 in Thetford, Norfolk. She died after 1880 in probably London. Ellen married Thomas BUTLER in 1842 in Sutton Street Chapel, Strand, London.

The 1861 census sees the widowed Ellen working as a laundress and living at 3 Eagle Court, Westminster, London with her family. Ten years later she and her three daughters were at 2 Little Catherine St. Westminster. She was still working as a laundress while the three girls were employed as machinists. At the time of the 1881 census 60-year-old Ellen appears to have been living with a George and Martha Powell and their family (relatives of Ellen's son-in-law William Powell?) at 19 George St., Westminster. Her occupation is listed as "monthly nurse", i.e., a woman who looked after a mother and her baby for the first few weeks after birth.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses to the marriage were George Butler and Elizabeth Butler. Could George and Elizabeth have been George James Butler and his daughter Eliza, members of the other Butler family mentioned above, to whom we think Thomas may have been related?

They had the following children.

  F i
Susannah (Susan) BUTLER was born in 1845 in St. Giles, London.
M ii John BUTLER was born about 1847.
  F iii
Catherine BUTLER was born in 1851 in St. Clement's, London.

The 1901 census tells us that John was a "Public House Agent". He and his family were living  at the time at 6 Oswyth Road, Camberwell, London.

Ellen 'UNKNOWN' was born about 1863 in Putney, London. She died. Ellen married John BUTLER.

Ellen was John's second wife. Her last name may have been Hallahan as a FreeBMD record has been located for the marriage of a John Butler and an Ellen Hallahan in Wandsworth in 1891.

They had the following children.

  F i
Ellen BUTLER was born in 1893 in Wandsworth, London.

Ellaline Mary BUTLER [Parents] was born on 5 Aug 1897 in Peckham, London. Ellaline married William E. POWELL in 1922 in West Ham registration district, London.

The 1939 Register tells us that Ellaline and her family were living at 161 Byron Road, East Ham, London. They appear to be living with the sister and brother-in-law of her husband, William, because listed above them in the Register, in the following order, are the following:

Frederick Charles William Barnes, telecommunications installer, born 1 October 1891 (William's brother-in-law)
Florence J. Barnes, 8 Jul 1890 (Frederick's wife and William's sister)

George Frederick BUTLER died.

'unknown' BUTLER was born in possibly Co. Kilkenny. He died in probably Dublin.

'Unknown' was apparently a musical instrument maker. According to his great-great-grandson George Butler, he was from Co. Kilkenny where he was apprenticed to a "shop" (I believe George meant a musical instrument making business here). His masters appear to have been anti-Catholic as George heard it said that his Kilkenny ancestor kept a catechism book hidden behind a brick in a wall. The story goes that 'unknown' left his job owing to ill treatment and made his way to Dublin where he continued (or started up) his trade. The family thinks he may have set up in business on Lower Exchange St., near the former Ss Michael & John church. A newspaper advertisement from the 1920s or 1930s found in a family scrapbook (name of newspaper and exact date of publication unknown) appears to support the family's account that 'unknown' was indeed a musical instrument maker:

J. BUTLER
(Successor to G. BUTLER & SONS)
Being the 5th generation in direct line trading in Dublin since the rebellion of 1798.

The "J. Butler" mentioned could only have been Jennie Butler, a great-great-granddaughter of 'unknown', indicating that 'unknown' was the first generation to run the business in Dublin. However, newspaper advertisements from the 1870s state that the business was "originally established in Dublin in the year 1826".  This ties in with William Waterhouse's 'The New Langwill Index: A Dictionary of Musical Wind-Instrument Makers and Inventors' (London, T. Bingham, 1993) which tells us that the business was founded by George Butler in 1926. Even if 'unknown's name was George it is unlikely that it was he who founded the business as he would have been in his fifties or sixties in 1926. Perhaps 'unknown' was indeed involved in the manufacture of musical instruments but it appears it was his son George who was the first family member to own his own business.

The Butler surname is Norman in origin and used to mean 'wine steward'. The name has the same root as the modern French "bouteille" meaning 'bottle'. The name was then extended to denote the chief servant of a household and, in the households of royalty and the most powerful nobility, a high-ranking officer concerned only nominally with the supply of wine. In Ireland most of the Butlers are descended from Theobald Fitzwalter, brother of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who was created Chief Butler of Ireland by Henry II in 1177. The huge territories he was granted were mainly in counties Tipperary, Limerick and Wicklow.

He had the following children.

M i George James BUTLER was born about 1795. He died on 8 Apr 1870.
