William (Bill) FINUCANE [Parents] was born about 30 Mar 1869 in Clounprohus, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 1 Apr 1869 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 23 Sep 1957 in Clounprohus, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Listowel, Co. Kerry. William married Mary Anne (Mainanne) O'CONNOR on 4 Feb 1899 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

I have been told by one family source that Bill was one of the "Gale Bridge Finucanes" of Cuss, Moyvane, although he farmed in Clounprohus where he was born. However, Cuss adjoins Clounprohus and it appears the Gale Bridge Finucanes and Clounprohus Finucanes are the same family.

It appears Bill inherited the family farm in Clounprohus, which is surprising as he had older brothers. His eldest brother, Michael, farmed in Cuss.

I am told that Bill was a staunch nationalist.

I can find no documented blood connection between Bill and his wife's great-grandmother, Margaret Finucane (who married Richard Hudson). However, I have been told by Hudson family researcher Bill Hudson that the Finucanes of Carhoonakineely, Tarbert, are related to Margaret ("fourth cousins of some type") and are very distantly related to Bill, although the exact connection to Bill is not known. The Carhoonakineely Finucanes and the Gale Bridge Finucanes do seem to be connected. For one thing, Bill's brother Michael is described as a cousin of Carhoonakineely-born Margaret Finucane of Faranawanna, Tarbert in her obituary in The Kerryman of 23 May 1908. Furthermore, in a short piece by Maurice N. Cotter in The Kerry Reporter of 14 April 1928 on William S. Finucane, a public official in Chicago, it is stated that William S. was a "kinsman of the Finucanes of Tarbert and our own William Finucane of Gale Bridge". Maurice himself, who was from Knocknagoshel, Co. Kerry but lived in Chicago, was married to Katie Finucane from Carhoonakineely so he would be in a position to know. However, William S. Finucane's ancestors appear to have come from Co. Clare, according to various online family trees.

Finucane researchers may be interested in knowing a little more about William S. who was a successful businessman and politician (Republican) in Chicago. The above Kerry Reporter piece concerned his candidacy for a position on the trustee board of the Sanitary District of Chicago; and he went on to be elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1939, holding his seat until his death in 1951. William Sidney Finucane was born in Illinois in 1888 to Thomas James Finucane (born 1858 in Illinois) and Mary Stella Bonfield. Thomas was a son of Michael Finucane (born 1821 in Co. Clare) and Margaret Dillon. Unfortunately I have seen no evidence linking William S's family to mine, nor have I come across any proof that my Finucanes had Clare connections. If anyone can shed any light I would be very grateful if you could email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com.

Mary Anne (Mainanne) O'CONNOR [Parents] was born on 6 Apr 1874 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 9 Apr 1874 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 11 Sep 1951 in Clounprohus, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in St. Michael's Cemetery, Listowel, Co. Kerry. Mary married William (Bill) FINUCANE on 4 Feb 1899 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

The sponsors at Mainanne's baptism were (what appears to be) John Cunningham and Ellen Connor.

Mainanne was also known as Muddy.

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were John O'Connor and Johanna O'Connor. The marriage of Bill and Mainanne was arranged, a practice common at the time.

He was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John married Winifred (Winnie) O'CARROLL on 3 Jan 1931 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Jack's baptismal sponsors were Thomas Healy and Elizabeth Healy.

Winifred (Winnie) O'CARROLL [Parents] was born on 29 Oct 1907 in Gortdromagowna, Knockanure, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 31 Oct 1907 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 10 Aug 2001 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was buried in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Winifred married John (Jack) R. SHANAHAN on 3 Jan 1931 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Patrick STACK [Parents] was born about 1842 in Drommurhur, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 11 Mar 1897 in Drommurhur, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Patrick married Sarah NOLAN on 6 Feb 1883 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Patrick may have been a brother of priests Fr. Edmund and Fr. Robert P. Stack of Drommurhur, sons of Patrick Stack and Margaret Sullivan. Robert was baptised on 15 May 1849 and was ordained on 25 May 1872. He served as pastor of St. Patrick's parish in Watertown, Massachusetts from 1879 until his death in Watertown on 17 June 1895. Edmund was baptised on 2 May 1852 and was ordained in 1890. He died in 1921. Another Edmund had been born to Patrick and Margaret in 1841 but it is being assumed he died as a child since they gave the name Edmund to their son born in 1852.

Patrick died of "chronic bronchitis" at the age of 54. The Irish Calendar of Wills and Administrations tells us he left effects valued at £377 and the executors were Michael O'Sullivan of Bunagara, Listowel, Co. Kerry and Joseph Nolan of Murhur, Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry.

Sarah NOLAN [Parents] was born in probably Feb 1855 in Glenalappa, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 22 Sep 1934 in Drommurher, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Sarah married Patrick STACK on 6 Feb 1883 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

We are not entirely sure where Sarah was from. I was told by a family member that she was from Carrueragh, Moyvane but a marriage record located for Sarah on  the Irish Genealogy wbsite, www.irishgenealogy.ie, tells us she was from Glenalappa, Moyvane (her father's name was Daniel).

According to the 1911 census, Sarah and her late husband, Patrick, had six children born alive, five of whom were living in at the time of the census. However, in the 1901 census Sarah lists six children, four of whom are not included in the 1911 list. The children named in the 1901 census are Robert, Mary, Margaret, John, Sarah and Annie, and those listed in 1911 are Robert, John, Michael, Patrick and Peter. I have combined the information from the two censuses to give the list below.

Sarah and Patrick had at least four daughters, baptismal records for whom were located on www.irishgenealogy.ie: Mary, Margaret, Sarah and Johanna (baptised 1884, 1886, 1893 and 1895 respectively, tying in with the names and ages of the daughters listed in the 1901 census if we assume Johanna and Annie are the same person. It is known that a Joan Stack of Drommurher, daughter of Patrick and Sarah Stack, married a Liam Hogan of Kilkenny in Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin on 24 April 1928. Joan was probably Johanna above who was baptised in 1895.

An obituary of a John P. Stack of Drommurher, who died at the age of 18, was published in The Kerryman newspaper on 21 December 1907. The information therein points to the deceased being John, son of Sarah above but the 1911 census has John, aged  22, listed. Given the other apparent error in this census return, relating to the number of children born alive, etc., it is possible that Sarah could have included John's name in error. There are census returns for only one Stack family in Drommurhur in both 1901 and 1911 so I think it unlikely there was a second Stack family in the townland, also with a son named John born about 1888.

They had the following children.

M i Robert (Bob) P. STACK was born on 4 Nov 1883. He died on 20 Nov 1957.
F ii Mary Ann STACK was born about 17 Feb 1884. She died on 16 May 1955.
F iii Margaret (Madge) STACK was born in Sep 1886.
  M iv
John (Jack) P. STACK was born about 1889 in Drommurhur, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in Dec 1907 in Drommurhur, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was buried in probably Duagh Cemetery, Co. Kerry.

Jack died in at the age of 18 from a heart condition. According to the obituary in The Kerryman newspaper dated 21 December 1907 Jack "fell ill about August last, and died from enlargement of the heart". The obituary goes on to say that John "was a student at St. Michael's College [Listowel] for the past four years and as such was very diligent and studious and gave every promise of becoming an ornament to the Church, it being his intention to enter the priesthood where many of his family distinguished themselves before, including his four uncles in the United States - the Rev. R. [probably Robert]Stack, Rev. R. [Robert] Nolan, Rev. M. [Michael] Nolan and Rev. E. [probably Edmund] Stack".
  M v
Michael STACK was born about 1890 in Drommurher, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Unfortunately we have no information on Michael.
F vi Sarah STACK was born on 12 Sep 1893. She died on 29 Nov 1954.
  M vii
Patrick STACK was born about 1893 in Drommurher, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Patrick may have died young.
  M viii
Peter STACK was born about 1894 in Drommurher, Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Unfortunately we have no information on Peter.
F ix Johanna (Annie, Hannie, Joan, Josephine) STACK was born on 19 Jan 1895. She died in 1977.

John HANRAHAN [Parents] was born about 1851 in Kilbaha, Newtownsandes (Moyvane), Co. Kerry. He died on 20 Feb 1919 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. John married Margaret CUNNINGHAM on 22 Feb 1887 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

John's father, Paddy, was probably a brother of Michael Hanrahan who married Margaret's aunt, also named Margaret Cunningham.

Witnesses to the marriage of Margaret and John were Myles Kearney and Kate Hanrahan. After their marriage, Margaret and John lived near the Scraghan River in the Gale Valley, just below Kilbaha. They later moved to Kilbaha.

According to the 1911 census Margaret and John had 12 children born alive, but only eight were alive in 1911 (all the children listed in the 1901 census were alive in 1911).

I was told John and Margaret died within a week of each other in the flu epidemic of 1918. However John died in 1919, the cause of death being "probably heart failure", and Margaret died in 1925 of a cerebral haemorrhage.

Margaret CUNNINGHAM [Parents] was born about 1 Oct 1858 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 3 Oct 1858 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 1 May 1925 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Margaret married John HANRAHAN on 22 Feb 1887 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Sponsors at Margaret's baptism were William Hudson and Mary Hudson.

F iii Johanna (Hannie) HANRAHAN was born on 11 Mar 1891. She died on 7 Feb 1981.
M iv Michael (Mick) J. HANRAHAN was born on 19 Apr 1892. He died on 11 Jun 1967.
M v Bryan HANRAHAN was born on 21 Nov 1893. He died on 15 Apr 1953.
  M vi
Timothy (Fr. Tim) HANRAHAN was born on 11 Jan 1895 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 12 Jan 1895 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 16 Oct 1935 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Bonneauville, Pennsylvania.

Tim's baptismal sponsors were Daniel Barrett and Ellen Hanrahan.

Tim studied for the priesthood at St Patrick's College, Carlow and was sent to the United States in 1918 where he served in Pennsylvania. He ministered initially at St. Francis's Church, Harrisburg before moving to St. Ignatius's Church in Centralia, then to St. Joseph's in Locust Gap, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Mount Carmel, and St. Patrick's Church in York. He subsequently spent eight years as chaplain at Mont Alto and had been pastor at St. Joseph's Church, Bonneauville for four years when he was killed in a car accident aged only 41. Tim was in a car with three other priests on their way to the consecration in Philadelphia of Fr. L. Leech as bishop of Harrisburg. Their car was overtaking another vehicle when it crashed into a telegraph pole.

F vii Catherine (Kitty) HANRAHAN was born on 30 Nov 1897. She died on 19 May 1949.
  M viii
John HANRAHAN was born on 31 Mar 1902 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 2 Apr 1902 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died before 1912.

John's baptismal sponsor was Honora Connor.
  F ix
Ellen (Nellie) HANRAHAN was born on 20 Nov 1903 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 22 Nov 1903 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died in Dec 1957 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Nellie's baptismal sponsors were Daniel Shine and Ellen Shine.

Nellie emigrated to the United States in 1921, joining her brother Tim in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Ellis Island records show that she arrived in New York on 8 November 1921, and that her occupation was a teacher.

At some point, Nellie was informally adopted by a family in the U.S. by the name of Dunne and went by the name of Nellie Hanrahan Dunne.

John (Jack) CUNNINGHAM [Parents] was born on 12 May 1909 in Newtownsandes (Moyvane) village, Co. Kerry. He was christened on 12 May 1909 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died in 1982 in New York City. John married Mary LENIHAN.

Jack's baptismal sponsor was Mary Shine.

Jack emigrated to the United States in August 1929 and settled in the Bronx, New York.

Mary LENIHAN was born in Lisheen, near Gneeveguilla, Co. Kerry. She died after 1982 in probably New York. Mary married John (Jack) CUNNINGHAM.

They had the following children.

Thomas (Tom) STACK [Parents] was born about 1855 in Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. He died on 22 Jul 1909 in Ballygoughlin, Glin, Co. Limerick. He was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Thomas married Ellen (Ellie) SHANAHAN on 2 Feb 1884 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Other marriages:
KENNELLY, Hanora (Nano)

Tom was a farmer. Although he was born in Gortdromasillihy, the civil record of his first marriage (1877) has him living in Gortdromagowna, Knockanure, Co. Kerry, while the record of his second marriage (1884) gives his address as Ballygoughlin, Glin, Co. Limerick.

Tom's first wife, Nano, was from Gortdromagowna and this may have led to his move to Gortdromagowna in advance of the marriage. It is known he was very supportive  of his sister Mary and her husband, Dan, and he gave them his farm in Gortdromagowna following their marriage in 1879. This would have necessitated a move to another farm and a suitable one must have been available in Ballygoughlin, Glin, Co. Limerick. We do not know if family connections in Ballygoughlin were connected with this move.

Thomas died of typhoid fever aged about 54.

Ellen (Ellie) SHANAHAN [Parents] was born about 1859 in Kilbaha, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. She died on 15 Oct 1903 in Ballygoughlin, Glin, Co. Limerick. She was buried in Murhur Cemetery, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Ellen married Thomas (Tom) STACK on 2 Feb 1884 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry.

Ellie was Tom's second wife, Tom's first wife, Nora (Nano) Kennelly, having died in childbirth along with the twins she was carrying.

Ellie died in her forties of "hemiplegia".

Marriage Notes:

Witnesses were William Stack and Michael Sheahan. Although Tom was a widower when he married Ellie he is described as a bachelor on his civil marriage record.

They had the following children.

Other marriages:
SHANAHAN, Ellen (Ellie)

Hanora (Nano) "Nano" KENNELLY [Parents] was born about 1851 in Gortdromagowna, Knockanure, Co. Kerry. She died on 29 Dec 1877 in Gortdromagowna, Knockanure, Co. Kerry. Nano married Thomas (Tom) STACK on 13 Feb 1877.

Nano was a sister of Dan Kennelly who married Mary Stack, a sister of Nano's husband, Tom.

Nano died the day after the birth of twins who also died. She was only 26. Before the birth, Nano's father, Jeremiah, who was going to the fair in Listowel, promised her the price of a bullock on his return. But when he arrived back, she and the babies had either died or were close to death.

At some point after Nano's death, Tom built a new two-storey house on his holding in Gortdromagowna (in which Tom's grandnephew Thomas Kennelly later lived with his wife, Maggie (née Shanahan). After the marriage of his sister Mary to Nano's brother Dan, Tom gave them his farm and new house, and purchased for himself, for £1,800 at auction, a freehold farm in the townland of Ballygoughlin in Glin, Co. Limerick. It is believed that Dan's family gave Tom about £500 when he left Knockanure.

Note: It is believed by one source that the occupiers of the Gortdromagowna holding prior to Tom were Griffins; another source says they were the Connors from Claar (Tom's mother was a Connor from Claar).

They had the following children.
