James FLAHERTY died about 1850 in probably Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. James married Mary SULLIVAN.

According to family lore, the Flaherty/O'Flaherty family of Newtownsandes (Moyvane) orininated in the Aran Islands, Co. Galway but had been driven from there owing to the activities (type unspecified) of a family member known as Ned the Grabber. Perhaps he was a land grabber.

Mary SULLIVAN died in probably Tubbertureen, Moyvane, Co. Kerry. Mary married James FLAHERTY.

At the time of Griffiths Valuation (1850s) a Mary Flaherty had five acres in Gortdromasillahy and 39 acres in Toberatooreen (also spelled Tubbertureen). She also had two plots in Glenalappa Middle, one of 18 acres and one of 40 acres. It is very likely that this Mary Flaherty is Mary Sullivan above who was married to James Flaherty.

If one looks at a map of the time it can be seen that the four plots mentioned above were actually contiguous, with only one house (in Toberatooreen) marked. In the early 1860s Mary and James's son Jamesie became the tenant of the 40 acres in Glenalappa, with the other 18 acres assigned to a Michael Flaherty. Around the same time the five acres in Gortdromasillahy and the 39 acres in Toberatooreen were both assigned to a Denis Flaherty. Although no baptismal records have been located for Michael or Denis we are assuming that they were brothers of Jamesie. Note: around 1900 the townlands of Toberatooreen and Gortdromasilahy were rationalised so that farms were no longer lying across townland boundaries. At that point the Flahertys' five acres in 'Sillahy' were assigned to 'Tober' while other parts of 'Tober' became part of 'Sillahy'. Many thanks go to Tom Moloney, a descendant of a sister of Jamesie's son-in-law Ned Mulvihill, for the above information.
