Thomas FREWEN [Parents] was born on 25 Jan 1897 in Gortavoher, Aherlow, Co. Tipperary. He died on 1 Jun 1975 in New York. Thomas married Johanna (Hannah, Anna) DOODY on 17 Mar 1923 in Church of Ss. Peter and Paul, Cork.

Thomas's marriage certificate tells us he was from the Glen of Aherlow, Co. Tipperary and that his father's name was Thomas, a farmer. Based on this information a 1901 census return was located for the Frewen family, which included four-year-old Thomas junior and his parents, Thomas and Jane. They were living in Gortavoher West in Clonbeg (in the Glen of Aherlow), Co. Tipperary.

Thomas emigrated to the United States in 1926, departing from Cobh (Queenstown) on 25 December 1926. His wife, Hannah, and their elder children followed in 1929. Then, in the early 1930s, the family moved back to Ireland to farm in either Galbally, Co. Limerick or Aherlow, Co. Tipperary (very close to Galbally). I have been told by one family source that Thomas and Hannah had a son named Richard who remained in Ireland when the family returned to the States in late 1935. However, another family source tells me he is unaware of a son named Richard and says the name Richard was widely used at the time in another Frewen family in the Glen of Aherlow - these were the Frewens of Rossbog - and perhaps it was a Richard from this other family who remained in Ireland when family members emigrated.

Thomas and Hannah and their family settled in Brooklyn, New York, not far from Hannah's sister Beatrice - the sisters were apparently very close. Thomas worked as a railroad conductor. At some point Thomas and Hannah had a new house built on the Galbally farm in Ireland for Hannah's widowed mother, Margaret.

Note: The 1930 U.S. census data for the Frewen family on the FamilySearch website has the name 'Frewin' transcribed as 'Freooen".

Johanna (Hannah, Anna) DOODY [Parents] was born on 12 Dec 1897 in Ardnamoher, Galbally, Co. Limerick. She died in Aug 1977 in New York City. Johanna married Thomas FREWEN on 17 Mar 1923 in Church of Ss. Peter and Paul, Cork.

They had the following children.

F i Margaret (Peggy) M. FREWEN was born in 1924. She died.

Thomas FREWEN was born in 1924 in Co. Tipperary. He died on 10 May 1980 in Tipperary, Co. Tipperary. He was buried in Clonbeg Cemetery, Glen of Aherlow, Co. Tipperary.

When Thomas's family emigrated to the United States in the late 1920s he did not accompany them (presumably he was left in the care of relatives in Tipperary). In the early 1930s his family returned to Ireland where they farmed for three or four years in either Aherlow, Co. Tipperary or on the Doody family farm in nearby Ardnamoher, Galbally, Co. Limerick. They eventually returned to the States but, once again, Thomas remained in Ireland. There is speculation he may have been offered the Doody family farm by his uncle Mick who had no children of his own.

A Thomas Frewen, aged 26 and from Aherlow, travelled to New York in April 1950. According to the ship manifest, his destination in New York was 5709 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, which was Thomas and Hannah's address. This was almost certainly Thomas above. It appears he was just visiting his family as we know he returned to Ireland where he lived in the Glen of Aherlow. He never married.

Thomas died at the age of about 56 after being hit by a car while out walking near his home in Aherlow one evening. He died in St. Vincent's Hospital in Tipperary.

A family source once told me the name of Thomas and Hannah's son who remained in Ireland was Richard but this does not seem to be the case. It is possible Thomas junior had a brother named Richard but I have been unable to locate a birth record - or any other record - for a Richard Frewen from this family. In Thomas junior's newspaper death notice from 1980 he was "deeply regretted by his sisters, uncles, aunts...", indicating he was an only son, unless of course he had a brother who had died. It is also possible that Thomas's middle name was Richard. The same source who told me about Richard also said that he and his sister Jane may have been twins. However, it appears it was Thomas and his sister Peggy who were twins as birth records have been located for a Thomas Frewen and a Margaret Frewen who were born in Tipperary in the first quarter of 1924.

Jane FREWEN was born in 1925 in Co. Tipperary. She died on 19 Dec 2019 in Brentwood, New York.

According to a family source Jane and Richard may have been twins.

Jane and her family emigrated to the United States when she was a child, returning a number of years later to farm in either Galbally or Aherlow. The family subsequently returned to the States and it is known that Jane attended high school in New York prior to taking a job in a phone company. As soon as she reached the age of 18 she entered the convent, joining the order of St. Joseph (apparently she could not have entered any younger). She eventually worked as a music teacher.

F iv Mary Josephine FREWEN was born on 23 May 1930. She died on 3 Jun 1997.

James (Jimmy) DOODY [Parents] was born on 11 Feb 1926 in probably Galbally, Co. Limerick. He died in May 1982 in Brooklyn, New York. James married Helen LOGAN.

Jimmy's mother emigrated to the United States in 1927, when Jimmy was just a baby, to join her husband who had left for the States the previous year. Jimmy remained in Ireland in the care of relatives until he too emigrated at the age of eight, on his own, to join his parents and siblings in Brooklyn.

Helen LOGAN died. Helen married James (Jimmy) DOODY.

Helen and Jimmy had no children.

Richard (Dick) Patrick DOODY [Parents] was born on 6 May 1928 in New York. He died on 30 Sep 1992 in Brooklyn, New York. Richard married Catherine (Kay) M. SEFLAND on 23 May 1953 in Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Brooklyn, New York City.

Catherine (Kay) M. SEFLAND [Parents] died on 1 Apr 2013. Catherine married Richard (Dick) Patrick DOODY on 23 May 1953 in Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Brooklyn, New York City.
