John CULLEN was born about 1820. He died on 27 Mar 1887 in Abbeyview, Carrowreagh, Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. John married Bridget 'UNKNOWN'.

John lived at Abbey View (also spelled Abbeyview), Frenchpark.

One of John's daughters married a T. J. Clancy or Glancy and lived in London. However I do not know which daughters this was.

Note: Neither my husband nor I are blood-related to John. However, two of his children married members of my husband's family: Patrick married Ellie Gordon and May married Ellie's brother Frank, hence my interest in this family.

Bridget 'UNKNOWN' was born about 1827. She died on 24 May 1904 in Abbeyview, Carrowreagh, Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. Bridget married John CULLEN.

According to a public family tree on the Ancestry website, Bridget's maiden name was Neary. However I have been unable to verify this.

I am told one of Bridget and John's daughters married a Mr. Clancy but I do not know which one.

They had the following children.

Michael was an Inland Revenue officer. He lived in London for a time and we know he was living in Oban, Scotland in 1904 as an obituary for his mother in The Westmeath Independent of 4 June 1904 lists among the mourners a son "M. Cullen, Oban, Scotland".

John and Freda were twins. John emigrated to the United States as a young man but returned to Ireland following the death of his wife in 1959.

John is buried in the family grave in Kilclooney Cemetery.

Mary 'UNKNOWN' was born in Navan, Co. Meath. She died in 1959 in U.S.. Mary married John GORDON in U.S..

John and Mary had no children. When Mary died John returned to live in Ireland.

Francis (Frank) J. GORDON [Parents] was born on 5 Aug 1891 in Grallagh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. He died in 1983 in probably Dublin. He was buried in Kilclooney Cemetery, Milltown, Tuam, Co. Galway. Francis married Amy Mary FFRENCH-LYNCH on 23 Jun 1931 in University Church, Dublin.

Frank farmed in Kilclooney, near Tuam, Co. Galway until his retirement when he moved to Dalkey, Co. Dublin. He and his wife, Amy, are buried in the family grave in Kilclooney Cemetery.

Harold LOWEY [Parents] was born on 19 Sep 1897 in Birkenhead, Cheshire. He died on 24 Nov 1941 in South Atlantic. Harold married Maude Eda Angela GORDON on 9 Jan 1935 in Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales.

According to one family source, Harold was of Manx origin, but another member of the family has told me that, while the Lowey name is common in the Isle of Man, it Harold's great-grandfather Richard Lowey may have come from Kilcoo in Co. Down. Richard later settled in Merseyside and married in Liverpool in 1820.

Harold was a naval officer. After his marriage he and his wife, Maude, lived for a time in Malta, where he was stationed, before returning to England where he and Maude lived at 255 Chatsworth Avenue, Cosham, Portsmouth.

Harold was killed when his ship, HMS Dunedin, was torpedoed by a German U-boat in the South Atlantic during World War II. He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial (panel 45, column 3).

Maude Eda Angela GORDON [Parents] was born on 23 Aug 1894 in Grallagh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died on 11 Aug 1987. She was buried in Shanganagh Cemetery, Dublin. Maude married Harold LOWEY on 9 Jan 1935 in Holyhead, Anglesey, Wales.

There is a Maude Gordon listed along with a Gertrude Gordon in the 1911 census of Ireland as a 15-year-old student at Loreto Convent boarding school in Dalkey, Co. Dublin. Athough the county of birth of Maude is given as Co. Galway (possibly because the family had moved to Co. Galway from Co. Roscommon where Maude was born), it is probable that the Maude at Loreto is our Maude above.

Maude is listed with the family of her sister Ivy Hosty in Bootle, Lancashire in the 1939 Register. Presumably she had moved in with them as her husband, Harold, was away serving wih the Royal Navy at the time.

They had the following children.

Daniel (Dan) A. HEGARTY was born in 1885 in Cork City. He died in 1953. He was buried in Deansgrange Cemetery, Dublin. Daniel married Gertrude (Gertie) GORDON in 1927 in Dublin.

Dan was a bank manager in Castletownbere, Co. Cork.

Gertrude (Gertie) GORDON [Parents] was born on 1 Dec 1895 in Grallagh, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1977. She was buried in Deansgrange Cemetery, Dublin. Gertrude married Daniel (Dan) A. HEGARTY in 1927 in Dublin.

There is a Gertrude Gordon listed (along with a Maude Gordon) in the 1911 census of Ireland as a 13-year-old student at Loreto Convent boarding school in Dalkey, Co. Dublin. I believe it is likely that the Gertrude at Loreto is our Gertie above.

The grave of Gertie and her husband, Dan, in Deansgrange Cemetery is quite close to that of Gertie's sisters Ethel, Laura, Freda and Ivy who are all buried together.

They had the following children.

M i James (Jim) HEGARTY was born in 1928. He died in 1987.

Daniel (Donal) HYDE [Parents] was born about 1887 in Co. Cork. He died on 31 Jan 1981 in Carrigaline, Co. Cork. Daniel married Clare (Babe) GORDON on 28 Nov 1918 in Ballintubber, Co. Roscommon.

Donal was an agricultural instructor. In 1910 he took up a position in the Elphin-Castlerea area of Co. Roscommon and in 1915 he moved to Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim. It appears he and his wife, Clare, were living in Drumshanbo at the time of the death of Clare's first cousin Lena Flanagan in 1922. It is not known how long they spent in Drumshanbo but by the time of Clare's death in 1972 they were living in Carrigaline, Co. Cork. It is thought they had no children.

Donal's brother Tim (1908-1967) rode Workman to victory in the Grand National of 1939.

Clare (Babe) GORDON [Parents] was born on 1 Aug 1889 in Currenturpane, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon. She died in 1972 in probably Carrigaline, Co. Cork. Clare married Daniel (Donal) HYDE on 28 Nov 1918 in Ballintubber, Co. Roscommon.

At the time of her death Clare was living in Stonehill House, Carrigaline.

Cormac GORDON [Parents] was born on 31 Dec 1933 in Mohill, Co. Leitrim. He died on 8 Oct 2001 in Connecticut. Cormac married Mary MURPHY in Sutton, Dublin.

Cormac graduated from university in London with degrees in civil and electrical engineering. He worked for the Department of Industry and Commerce in Ireland, much of his work relating to energy research.
