Notes from Helen: Many thanks go to Thomas FitzGerald, a descendant of Michael above, for contributing most of the information below on the extended Hayes family of Fairy Street. This information is the result of extensive genealogical research carried out in the 1980s by Thomas's granduncle Gerald FitzGerald. I am also very grateful to Tom Moloney of Duagh, Co. Kerry, another Hayes researcher, who has kindly shared all his information on the Hayes family of Fairy Street, Templeathea.

I have been that Richard J. Hayes (1902-1976), code-breaker during World War II and director of the National Library of Ireland from 1940 to 1967, was a descendant of Michael's but it appears this is not the case. Although Richard was born in Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick, his family was not native to the county. Newspaper archives, census returns and birth/marriage records tell us that Richard's father, also named Richard, was manager of the National Bank in Abbeyfeale at the time of Richard's birth and was subsequently posted to Claremorris, Co. Mayo where Richard junior grew up; Richard senior was born in Co. Clare (probably Ennis) where his own father, Ambrose, was manager of the National Bank in Ennis; and Ambrose's father, who was named Richard, was from Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, and Ambrose married a Catherine Daniel of Clonmel in Clonmel in 1852. Also, according to a newspaper article, Richard from Clonmel was descended from "an old Co. Wexford family".

Online research also tells us that Richard junior's talents as a code-breaker were initially proved in 1940 when he decoded a cipher found on the first German agent to be captured in Ireland. Apparently Richard went on to become one of the most prolific code-breakers of World War II. He had married Clare Columba Keogh in 1928 and they had six children.

Although I myself am not directly related to the Hayes family, two members of my Hudson family of Kilbaha (in the Kerry parish of Newownsandes/Moyvane) married great-grandsons of Michael above: Hanora (Johanna) Hudson married Tom Hayes in 1881, and Johanna's niece Bridget Hudson married Tom's second cousin James M. Hayes in 1909. I hope the information below is helpful to Hayes researchers.

Mary's baptismal sponsors were John Roche and Bridget Hayes.

I have been told by one family source that Mary "died in the U.S." However, I have also been told by another source that she was the Mary Hayes from Fairy Street who married a Johnny Hanrahan in Coolcappagh-Kilcolman, Co. Limerick on 13 February 1848 (when Mary would have been just 13 years old). It is not known where Johnny was from but I was told that one of his grandmothers was from Fairy Street. This Mary who married Johnny Hanrahan was related to Dr. Tom Hayes of Rathkeale, Co. Limerick (who was a first cousin of Mary above) but the exact type of connection is not known. Mary and Johnny lived in Kerrikyle, Ardagh, Co. Limerick and had a large family, all of whom emigrated to the United States except for their eldest daughter who emigrated to Australia, and a son, Paddy, who stayed at home and inherited the small farm. All the other children went to New York where they had an aunt, Ann Hanrahan. The youngest Catherine, who was born in 1873, later returned to Ireland and married Mike Donovan, also from Co. Limerick. Johnny predeceased Mary who lived with Paddy on the farm until Catherine married and brought her to live with herself and Mike in Newbridge, Altavilla, Askeaton, Co. Limerick. Johnny was buried in Ardagh and Mary in Nantinan (near Askeaton), Co. Limerick, next to a Noonan grave. It is thought Mary was related to a Noonan family.

I have another Mary Hayes from Fairy Street in my family tree, a double first cousin of Mary Hayes above (their fathers were brothers and their mothers were sisters). This Mary was born around 1835 to Tom Hayes and Mary Downey and I am told by a family source that she "went to the USA". It could be that there has been some confusion between the two cousins and that perhaps only one settled in the U.S. and the other married Johnny Hanrahan. Given her apparent connection with Dr. Tom Hayes it does seem that the Mary who married Johnny was related to Mary above so if anyone knows how exactly they might be connected I would be very grateful if you would email Helen@HelensFamilyTrees.com.
