All Families and Individuals

Robert O'DOWER [Parents] was born about 1730 in possibly Arranagh, Monagea, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick. He died in probably Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.

Robert and his family used the name O'Dower, while their descendants used the Dower or Dore surname. Robert was originally from Arranagh, later moving to Rathcahill, near Newcastle West, before settling in Gortnagloss.

He had the following children.

  M i
Robert O'DOWER was born in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. He died.

Robert settled in Ardagh, Co. Limerick.
M ii Edmond O'DOWER was born about 1756. He died on 7 Mar 1864.
M iii Maurice DOWER was born about 1758.
F iv Ellen O'DOWER/DORE was born about 1770. She died in 1827.
  F v Eleanora O'DOWER died.
  F vi Margaret O'DOWER died.

Robert O DOGHAIR was born about 1705 in probably west Co. Limerick.

Robert's descendants settled in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick, where members of the family still live. A number of descendants of this Gortnaglass family settled in Newtownsandes (now known as Moyvane) and nearby parishes in north Kerry. The O Doghair surname was eventually anglicised to O'Dower and Dower, with the surname of several of the O'Dower/Dower family members evolving into Dore. The Dower/Dore name is numerous throughout Ireland, especially in Co. Limerick. It is a name derived usually from the Irish "Ó Doghair" from the word "doghra" meaning "sorrow".

Several descendants of Robert's are buried in Monagea Old Churchyard in Monagea, near Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, including Maurice M. Dore of Gortnagross, who died on 21 March 1950, and his wife, Nora, who died on 23 August 1977. I have, however, been unable to establish how exactly Maurice was related to Robert above.

John O'Connor of Brisbane, Australia, and his wife, Roslyn (née Ryan), have written an in-depth history of their families entitled 'Made in Queensland ...a Product of Ireland, a History of the O'Connor/Dore and Ryan/Challis Families in Queensland' (published in 2010). Included in the book is an account of the Dore/Dower family of Gortnagloss, some of which appears below with the kind permission of the authors. However, much more information on the family is available in Made in Queensland, which at one time could be purchased online, although I have been told recently that it no longer seems to be available.

Kathleen Dore from Canada has kindly provided information on her own Dore family who came from Newtownsandes:

John Patrick Dore was born in either Shanagolden, Co. Limerick or Newtownsandes, Co. Kerry around the 1840s and married Mary O'Connor around the 1860s. They lived in Gortdromasillihy, Newtownsandes and had at least seven children: James (8 October 1875 - 12 May 1965), Mary (1877), Kathleen, John, Patrick (born c. 1883) who married Ellie (surname unknown) and Michael (c. 1886) who married Hannie (surname unknown). James, Mary, Kathleen and John all emigrated to Canada, settling in Montreal. James left Ireland in 1901 and married Margaret Maureen Cronin in Montreal in 1904. Margaret (1882-1972) was a daughter of John Cronin and Margaret Donoghue from Kilcolman, Co. Limerick and emigrated to Canada in 1900. All of Margaret Cronin's siblings emigrated: James, Mary (1874-1956) and Kathleen settled in Montreal, Anna went to Vancouver, and John (Jack) settled in Boston.

Note from Helen: Although neither my husband nor I am descended from Robert, his great-great-great-granddaughter Brigie Dore married my great-granduncle Richie Cunningham. In the course of my research into the Cunninghams, I have been provided with valuable information on the Dore/Dower family that might be useful to Dore/Dower researchers, hence its inclusion on this website.

He had the following children.

  M i Robert O'DOWER was born about 1730.
M ii Maurice O DOWER died.

Maurice was from Knockanasig, Listowel, Co. Kerry.

I have been DNA-matched by Ancestry to a descendant of Maurice's and am assuming the connection is through the Woulfes (my great-great-grandmother was Mary Woulfe from most likely Athea).

Ellen O'DOWER/DORE [Parents] was born about 1770 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. She died in 1827. She was buried in Templeathea, Athea, Co. Limerick. Ellen married Maurice James WOULFE on 23 Feb 1784.

Edmond O'DOWER [Parents] was born about 1756 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. He died on 7 Mar 1864 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. Edmond married Ellen MURPHY.

An obituary in The Limerick Chronicle of 12 March 1864 tells us that an Edmund Dower of Meenoline, near Newcastle West, Co. Limerick had died at the age of 107. Mention is also made of his brother Maurice who had predeceased Edmund at the age of 103. Edmund was buried in Monagea Old Churchyard. Our Edmund O'Dower above was born about the same time as Edmund Dower of Meenoline and had a brother named Maurice. It is therefore possible they are the same person.

Ellen MURPHY was born about 1787 in Shanagolden, Co. Limerick. Ellen married Edmond O'DOWER.

They had the following children.

  M i
Robert DOWER was born about 1778 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.

Robert never married.

M xii Robert DORE was born in 1846. He died in 1920.

Edmond DORE [Parents] died. Edmond married Johanna DORE in 1869.

Johanna DORE [Parents] was born in 1841. Johanna married Edmond DORE in 1869.

Johanna and her husband, Edmond, were third cousins once removed.

Michael (Mike) DORE [Parents] was born in 1843 in probably Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. He died on 4 Jun 1926 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. He was buried in Monagea, Co. Limerick. Michael married Mary DORE on 1 Mar 1870 in Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.

Mike farmed in Gortnagloss (which I have also seen spelled as Gortnagross).

Mary DORE [Parents] was born about 1845 in probably Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. She died on 12 Jan 1923 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. She was buried in Monagea, Co. Limerick. Mary married Michael (Mike) DORE on 1 Mar 1870 in Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.

Mary and Mike were third cousins once removed.

One of their sons entered the priesthood, becoming Fr. Chryststom, who died aged 75 in Drogheda, Co. Louth in 1953. Although we do not know which son this was. given that Fr. Chryststom's age in 1953 ws 75 (i.e. born around 1878), it would appear it was probably Patrick.

They had the following children.

  M i
Edmond DORE was born in 1871 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.
  F ii
Honora DORE was born in 1873 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.

A Hanora Dore, born about 1870 in Dually near Newcastle West, Co. Limerick, may be our Hanora above. The Hanora Dore from Dually married a cousin whose surname was also Dore, just like our Hanora; and it is believed that the father of the Hanora from Dually was from Gortnagloss, where our Hanora's family was from originally. The Hanora from Dually married Michael Cregan from Ballyshane, Monagay (also spelled Monagea), Co. Limerick. She died about 1956.
  M iii
John DORE was born in 1874 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.

A John Dore of Gortnagloss died on 24 May 1959. This may have been John above. According to his newspaper death notice he was "deeply regretted by his loving wife and sons".
  M iv
Maurice DORE was born in 1876 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.

A Maurice M. Dore of Gortnagloss died on 21 March 1950. This may have been Maurice above. According to his newspaper death notice he was "deeply regretted by his loving wife and brothers", suggesting he had no children. If this Maurice is our Maurice above, then it also suggests that his three sisters (Honora, Mary and Katie) had all died by this time. However, a newspaper notice later in the month thanking sympathisers came from "the widow, brothers, sister and relatives" of Maurice.
  M v
James DORE was born in 1877 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.
  M vi
Patrick DORE was born in 1879 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.

  M x
Robert (Bob) DORE was born in 1886 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. He died on 27 Jan 1964. He was buried in Monagea, Co. Limerick.
  M xi
Daniel DORE was born in 1888 in Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick.

Robert DORE [Parents] was born in 1846 in probably Gortnagloss, Templeglantine, Co. Limerick. He died in 1920 in Queensland, Australia. Robert married Sarah CREGAN on 6 Mar 1875 in Shanagolden, Co. Limerick.

Included in the book is much of the information that appears below, which John and Roslyn have kindly shared.
