Charles MORAHAN [Parents] was born in 1876 in probably Cloonmaan, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died on 1 Oct 1956 in Dublin. He was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin. Charles married Emily Jane O'SHAUGHNESSY on 18 Jul 1906 in Clifden, Co. Galway.

Charles joined the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) and we know he was stationed in the town of Bellinagh, Co. Cavan at the time of the 1911 census.  After he left the force he returned to Carrick-on-Shannon, living on The Market and working, it is thought, as a market superintendent. He and his wife, Emily, and family later moved to Dublin where they lived at 31 Talbot St.

According to the Irish Calendar of Wills and Administrations, 1858-1920, a Thomas Morahan of Cleaheen, Co. Roscommon who died on 16 August 1905 left his estate (worth £93) to a Charles Morahan, police constable. This Charles could be our Charles above although it seems more likely to have been Charles Morahan of Cleaheen, also a member of the police force, whose wife's name was Bridget and who died in 1949 aged 81 (i.e., born about 1868). Note: Bridget died on 30 March 1965. It appears she and Charles had no children.

Emily Jane O'SHAUGHNESSY [Parents] was born about 1883 in Co. Galway. She died after 1 Oct 1956 in Dublin. She was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin. Emily married Charles MORAHAN on 18 Jul 1906 in Clifden, Co. Galway.

Tony lived in the Morahan family home at 31 Talbot St., Dublin until his death.

James MORAHAN [Parents] was born in probably Cloonmaan, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. He died in Oct 1957 in Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. James married Elizabeth 'UNKNOWN'.

The 1901 census tells us that James was a "boat and car builder". He later added coffin-making to his business.

Patrick lived in St. Patrick's Park in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Elizabeth 'UNKNOWN' died on 15 Mar 1956 in St. Patrick's Park, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim. Elizabeth married James MORAHAN.

They had the following children.

  F i
Mary MORAHAN died.

Mary was unmarried at the time of the death of her father in 1957.

Owen BOYLE [Parents] was born about 1904. He died. Owen married Violet Kathleen HARVEY on 29 Sep 1930 in St. Joseph's Church, Glasgow.

According to his marriage certificate Owen was a "sewage-work labourer" from Thistle St., Glasgow.

Violet Kathleen HARVEY [Parents] was born about 1908 in probably Glasgow. She died. Violet married Owen BOYLE on 29 Sep 1930 in St. Joseph's Church, Glasgow.

Violet's children moved from Glasgow, where they had grown up, to Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim, as did several other members of the Harvey family who had lived for years in the Glasgow area. Violet too may have moved to Carrick. The family's connection with the Carrick-on-Shannon area was through Violet's mother, Katie Morahan, who was born there.

They had the following children.

  F i
Kathleen DOYLE was born in possibly Glasgow. She died on 21 Jul 2009 in Sligo.

Kathleen lived in St. Patrick's Park, Carrick-on-Shannon. She never married.

'unknown' RYNN died. 'unknown' married 'unknown' LAYDEN (female).

'unknown' LAYDEN (female) [Parents] died. 'unknown' married 'unknown' RYNN.

John GORDON [Parents] was born on 11 Jun 1874 in Sheepwalk, Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon. He died after 1954. John married 'UNKNOWN'.

According to the family, John was born in 1873. However, there is an LDS birth record for a John Gordon, born in Frenchpark on 11 June 1874 to John Gordon and Mary Connor. It is possible that this relates to John above.

John was a  well known farmer and cattle dealer in Elphin, Co. Roscommon. He is remembered as "a very tall jovial man" whose grandnieces and grandnephews enjoyed spending time with him on his trips to Dublin from Elphin. John was "well into his nineties when he died", according to a family source (hence his date of death provided here of "after 1954").

'UNKNOWN' died. 'UNKNOWN' married John GORDON.

Unknown's name may have been Annie O'Connor, although this would need to be verified. It is thought that she and her husband, John, may have been related. Perhaps they were connected through the family of John's mother, Mary O'Connor. Annie(?) was apparently considerably younger than John. She and John had no children.

Robert HUDSON [Parents] was born in 1842 in probably Tralee, Co. Kerry. He died on 18 Feb 1917 in Gortmore House, Strand St., Tralee, Co. Kerry. Robert married Maria L. A. MASON on 8 Jan 1885 in Kilflynn, Co. Kerry.

Robert became a medical doctor, having graduated in 1865 from Trinity College in Dublin. Although it is believed he set up a practice in Dingle, Co. Kerry around 1870 and lived there for the remainder of his working life, his address at the time of his marriage in 1885 was Kilflynn (near Tralee), Co. Kerry. Besides his Dingle practice Robert had dispensaries in Ventry and Murreigh, both near Dingle, and he provided medical attention to the people of the Blasket Islands, once being marooned there for a week due to rough weather. Robert spent 36 years working in the Dingle area. He lived at Bridge House in Dingle until about 1906 when he retired to Tralee, moving back to to Gortmore House, his old family home on Strand St.

Robert owned a number of properties in and around Tralee (on the Mall, Castle St., Dominick St., Blennerville and Blackpoole), which eventually passed to his daughter Saidie.

Maria L. A. MASON [Parents] was born about 13 Sep 1855 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 15 Sep 1855 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. She died on 30 Apr 1956 in 'Thorndene', Monkstown, Dublin. Maria married Robert HUDSON on 8 Jan 1885 in Kilflynn, Co. Kerry.

I was a baptismal date for Maria of 15 September 1856 by Hudson researcher Bill Hudson of Florida. However, a baptismal record has been located on the Irish Genealogy website,, for a Mary (Maria and Mary are synonymous) Mason whose father's name was John and who was baptised in Dingle on 6 April 1856. According to the baptismal record, Mary's mother's name was Elizabeth (the last name is not provided).

In 1921, four years after Robert's death, Maria moved from Tralee to Dublin with her daughter Roberta and possibly her other daughter, Saidie, leaving Gortmore House, the Hudson family home in Tralee, to the Bon Secours order which set up a hospital on the property. After a couple of years in Dublin Maria bought 'Thorndene' at 87 Monkstown Road in Monkstown where she lived for the rest of her life. I am told that Maria was 101 years of age when she died in 1956 (although her age in the 1911 census is given as 48, about eight years younger than she would have been if she had been born about 1856).

Marriage Notes:

They had the following children.

M i Edward HUDSON was born on 3 Nov 1885. He died on 1 Apr 1967.
M ii Richard Francis Huggard HUDSON was born on 23 Dec 1886. He died on 20 Feb 1954.

Elizabeth, who was known by her middle name, Roberta, never married. She died aged only 41. According to a family source she died of pleurisy but her death certificate gives her cause of death as "general wasting and debility, cardiac syncope".
  F iv
Sarah (Saidie) Stephena HUDSON was born on 26 Dec 1889 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. She was christened on 16 Feb 1890 in Dingle, Co. Kerry. She died on 21 Jun 1968 in Tralee, Co. Kerry. She was buried in New Cemetery, Rock St., Tralee, Co. Kerry.

Saidie never married. It is thought she lived with her mther at Thornedene, 87 Monkstown Road in Dublin but she died in a Tralee nursing home.
